Led Zeppelin formed in 1968 and went on to become one of the most influential, innovative, and successful groups in modern music, having sold more than 300 million albums worldwide. The band rose from the ashes of The Yardbirds, when Jimmy Page brought in John Bonham, John Paul Jones, and Robert Plant to tour as The New Yardbirds. In 1969, Led Zeppelin released its self-titled debut which was produced by Page, as were all the subsequent albums. It marked the beginning of a 12-year reign, during which the group was widely considered to be the biggest and most innovative rock band in the world.

Back in 73 I was in 10th grade. Had an old '66 Ford Econoline gas company van that I converted to a shagger. Had an 8 track and JBL speakers. After school, on the way to work at a hot dog shop, I would fire up a fattie and listen to Zep Houses of the Holy on the way there. Put me in a perfect mood to sling some yappers.

Indeed, you are correct; Bonzo HATED this song and originally had refused to try and play it, partly because because he was not a fan of reggae and wasn't his style. But as you said, he did make it work though, being the consummate professional he was.

In a 2005 interview, Plant discussed the different interpretations and pronunciations of the name of the song.[2] He explained that the title is derived from an old joke, where two friends have the following exchange: "My wife's gone to the West Indies." "Jamaica?" (which in many English accents sounds like "Did you make her?") "No, she wanted to go".[5] The title, which does not appear in the lyrics, was chosen because it reflects the reggae feel of the song, and as an example of the Led Zeppelin band members' senses of humour.[2][6] Because of the unfamiliarity of listeners to this back-story, as well as ignoring the apostrophes intentionally placed in the title, American DJs and fans often mispronounce the title as "dire maker".[2] This confusion and mispronunciation was more common in the United States than in Britain, according to Jimmy Page.[7]

have loved this song for years, recently looked it up and found out for the first time that Led Zeppelin actually really disliked this song and got a lot of hate for making it. Supposedly they were jokingly incorporating vaguely Jamaican beats together with '50s doo-wop, and never really meant for this to become an official song. I don't know, I think it's really good, but what do I know! Supposedly the name D'yer Mak'er, when pronounced in an English accent, sounds like "Jamaica." It's from a joke that goes something like "My wife went on vacation to the West Indies." "Jamaica?" (which in an English accent sounds like "did ya make her?") - "No, she wanted to go." Удивительно, как разнообразна музыка Led Zeppelin. Эта песня даже залита у меня в телефон на звонки. Эта группа само совершенство! Равных им нет!...It's amazing how diverse Led Zeppelin's music is. This song is even uploaded to my phone for calls. This group is perfection! They have no equal!...

yes, we do remember zeppelin for changing everything about rock music, but im appreciative of their post-IV works. They weren’t just blues based players who added a lot of heft; they were idea machines, and they wanted to push rock further than they already had.

I was 8yo when this album was released. I remember listening to it, laying stomach down on my bed, hands to the ground, my speakers were behind me and @03:57 I nearly jumped out of my skin thinking the devil was behind me with his flames and pitchfork!!!

This is the song that even Zep haters love. I had an ex-gf and a roommate, both of whom said they did not like Zep... both said they liked this song.

Love how Jonesy has muted his bass to emulate the Desmond Dekker style reggae. The rest of the boys didn't get the memo (particularly Bonzo) and caned it! Fab.

For some reason I have always especailly loved Bonham's explosive cymbal hit at 0:21! Go back to at least 0:18 for it's full effect! I remember my first quality walkman and wearing this tape out! That cymbal hit is a masterpiece!

John Bonham hated this song as he didn't like the drumming style he had to adopt for it.

Had this song on a playlist and when it came on I absently thought wow this drummer is really good. A second later I remembered it's a Led Zeppelin song like duh of course it's gonna be good. Bonham really was something else.

Sounds like angel baby by Rosie and the originals it has a similar chord pattern 🎶 In the liner of their album Houses of the Holy he mentioned something along the lines of “whatever happened to Rosie and the Originals?” Shows how LZ were studens of music before anything🤘

I always say it's sacrilegious to listen to any other song after listening to Zeppelin but…after D’yer Mak’er I listen to reggae…a bit of Jimmy Cliff and Bob Marley…a little betrayal… 😁😉
