This is the one drum beat that gives me the most trouble. The paradiddle and the triplets get me tripped up. Impressive that you can keep the flow going for so long.

@@kimecheezie2670 I have not had time to practice in a while, and I gravitated towards jazz again because it's the most fun for me. I am about 80 percent of the way there. When I have more time I will focus on just this groove until I master it.

Hey man, I’m a midlife crisis drummer. Been playing for almost a year and still going at it even though I know I suck. It’s been so much fun and kept my mind active during covid. I always wanted to play but didn’t commit time and resources until now. The thing that got me started was watching that famous Purdie shuffle video and as soon as I heard it I was like, hey that’s fool in the rain! Bohnam’s drums always stuck out and when I heard Purdie break it down, I got this pervasive thought that hey I can learn that. Being a dumbass with no drum experience, that was one of the first things I set out to learn. I would spend every day just trying to get the groove down. It’s is insanely difficult to integrate the bass with open hihat along with ghost notes. I would practice other things just so I could get better with this shuffle. Anyway after a year of putting it down and picking it back up, I finally have a recognizable rendition. I have watched a lot of videos and tutorials but yours is the cleanest and most accurate I’ve seen. My final loose ends to this song are the fills and the 8th note trip bridge. I can do the bridge but it’s still not consistent. It seems even harder if I try to slow it down. Anyway, I’m happy with my progress and know I’ll eventually get it. Thanks for putting these out. I just subscribed. Your videos are tremendously helpful and your song selection is one of the best out of other KZbin drummers.

Rick, dude thank you for checking it out. I really appreciate the comment and sub. It's never to late to start playing the greatest instrument known to man, I am glad you decided to pick up the sticks. The shuffle as you found out isn't the easiest, even though Bonham and Purdie were born to just sit in the pocket so well. I remember first learning this groove I was constantly rushing. Everything. The ghost notes especially. Hell, I still push and pull here and there. Anyone that plays this groove might approach it differently and sound completely different from someone else and that's how it should be ya know. Keep grinding, having fun with it, and good luck on your drum journey 🤙

Hey Josh, awesome. I am a Zep and Rush head and this is by far Bonham's best work. This has the Purdy Shuffle grove off the Steely Dan Aja record. I am a bass player and guitarist, so only hear percussion, but do know when it sounds great. You smashed this one. Nice work. I also think you nailed the tuning of the snare as this is one of the more important things in this song. Keep rolling some more samples. I have studied this drum progression (only out of love for John and Neil) but this is far more complicated than anyone imagines. Not only drummers, but fellow string dudes like me. Thanks for sharing. Maybe, a YYZ or Tom Sawyer contrast is next?
