Gem of a track by Zeppelin. Maybe it's just me but the acoustic foundation of the song (even Bonham's drumming is ratcheted down) and most notably the mandolin makes me think Plant and Page were thinking fondly of The Faces during their Rod Stewart phase. Thanks Cosmo and Harri for a deep cut from a legendary band.

I was in junior high, eighth grade. Went to my record store. I looked in the imports. Saw a 45 from Zeppelin. The label was in Japanese. But it was "HEY HEY, WHAT CAN I DO?". The other side was "Immigrant song". The record sat in my garage in a case for 30 years. Then I found it and framed the record and the sleeve and hung it in my Zeppelin wall in my man-cave. Wish I could send this pic! 🤣🤣

I loved these rare, strictly acoustic songs and the sound of the mandolin. While Led Zeppelin was obviously influenced by the old American bluesmen, there are gems like these that show the homegrown influences of British folk. Their "The Battle of Evermore" even features a rare duet with the female vocalist from the British hippie/folk band, Fairport Convention, the incomparable Sandy Denny.

Because this song was never released on a album it was very popular. On the flip side of the Immigrant Song, it's scarcity made this single zoom up in sales. It also was never played live. Amazing instruments whip this song up into a great tune. Robert Plant's vocals are so wonderful. Watch out for the ladies. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Cosmo. It was released on a Zeppelin album but not until Coda! However the record label included the track on a sampler album at the time, featuring other bands like Savoy Brown - I had a copy in the early 70s, the title “New Magic in a Dusty World” comes to mind, but I might be confusing it with another sampler!

Zeppelin has a lot of softer music. Album three is full of acoustic music. Even their first album has acoustic play all through it as well as rock, and especially blues.

Outtake from Led Zeppelin III. It has the same sort of feel as "Gallows Pole," the first song on the second side of the album (yes, the vinyl version). "Gallows Pole" is actually a version of a very old ballad that appears in the Child collection (#95, The Maid Freed from the Gallows). Lead Belly also recorded a version of it.

It appeared in the 80's, many years after recording it for the Zep III sessions. People were starved for 'real' music after a steady diet of Madonna, Paula Abdul and Michael Jackson and British syth pop. This song became really popular - all over the radio so many years after they recorded it.

Harri. Question. This song came out in 1970. So I have a question about the lyric "I gotta woman wanna Ball all day." I've never heard of or know anyone who said this at that time. I was born in 1973, but no one I know, grandparents, parents, friends of parents, ever used this as an expression. And, I did a little research and it comes up as a colloquial expression in Hip Hop(we all knew that already). So, how is it that Robert Plant so easily with butter uses this in his lyrics of 1970? I think, Harri, that the group either embedded themselves in the American south with Black Americans, learned a lot of lingo and put it into their lyrics. It's not the first Zep song that uses lingo still hip today, 2024. I feel that this may be an overlooked genius of the group. A characteristic that's not really discussed or duly noted today. 1970 is almost 60 years ago and some people today still wouldn't understand the phrase "wanna Ball all day." What gives here. What's the story behind some of their words that seem to be relevant and Hip even today? Either this is an overlooked genius of the group, or they really did channel dark and nefarious forces when recording at Hedley Grange. Can you comment Harri? I ask this question only to you bc you seem to be an apt person able to tackle this question and explore the possibilities. And, there are more similar lyrical examples from Zep. ???????Please Help? (big fan)

Led Zeppelin is my all-time favorite Hard Rock band. I've got all their albums and more live bootlegs then studio albums. Back in the 70's my brother mistakenly gave me a 1st print of their 45, The Immigrant Song. The b-side was Hey Hey What Can I Do. At the time, and for years it was the only Led Zeppelin song not to be on an album. Eventually it was added to their release Coda. The reason I say that my brother mistakenly gave me the 45 was because, while he was living 3,000 miles away, he kept asking me to give him back the record. I found out that, because it wasn't on an album (for years) it had become a collector's item and was worth some bucks. He was nowhere near the Zeppelin fan I was, and he never got the 45 back. I still have it til this day.

Also check out the band, The Pentangle. Jimmy Page had gone on record as having said that Led Zeppelin would have been like this one had it not been for Plant's heavy voice. Some representative titles by the Pentangle are _Rain and Snow, A Woman Like You,_ and _Jack O' Rion_

I don't think I ever even heard this song until after Bonzo died. And then it seems like it was just a few months and this was released or I suppose technically re-released since it was the B side of the Immigrant Song which I'd never heard, and meaning I'd never heard side B of the Immigrant Song I've heard the Immigrant Song a whole bunch and love it. So yeah just not long after you started hearing it on the radio. And at first it was very difficult to get. It was quite difficult you couldn't just hop on the internet and order it or anything like that. But I started talking to a few people that new people and somehow I got my hands on a Japanese bootleg have it and it's not a bootleg at all I mean and in fact I think it was actually sanctioned by Led Zeppelin ultimately but it was like the lettering on it's all in Japanese and it was just an early way to get a copy of it and it was really low quality vinyl in fact it may have even been a floppy single I can't remember might have been. But anyway I loved it and played it over and over, laugh.

I found it in the late 80s as a track on a used UK pressing of a compilation album called The New Age Of Atlantic. It was a sampler of various Atlantic artists in the early 70s, ranging from Zeppelin to John Prine to Dr. John to Yes, etc. The other track on the sampler that i really liked was Sam Stone by John Prine.
