The fact that this was a "throwaway" track that didn't make it on to the album of the same name is yet another indicator of how great Zeppelin were--songs they initially considered substandard ended up being beloved by their fans. "Houses of the Holy" has one of the catchiest riffs in Rock.

I wouldn't consider it a "throwaway"; it wasn't used on the HOTH album because Jimmy thought it sounded too similar to music already there, like Dancing Days.

To me, this is the epitome of a straight ahead rocker. It's not overly fancy, but it does everything that Zep does well; a crunchy riff, Plant's vocals hitting those screechy notes, and bass and drums laying the sturdy foundation. Always loved this one from the first second I heard it.

For me, Plant is the hero here. His vocals get more interesting as song goes on. Everyone else's performances are stellar but Plant made this song relevant with his cool choices, especially at the end of the song..."let me take you, take you to the movies, let me take you take you to the show.." subtle things but cool choices. Thanks again guys. #airplaybeats

Plant can ignore the cadence of the rhythm and Jimmy's amazing licks. He sings in spots other singers wouldn't, while the licks are still happening. He's literally another musical instrument. That's unusual. Chaka Khan and Aretha among others used themselves that way. Al Green, Glenn Hughes on and on. But Robert Plant is arguably the best of them knowing where to sing the lyrics and where to fill with a wail or groaning grunt etc. Impressive body of work. Led Zeppelin is not much without Plant to be honest.

Solid tune. Not one of their best on the album, but ya know what? There are no bad songs on the album, nor few bad Zep songs, period. The whole "Physical Graffiti" album sounds as if Led Zep finally gathered their leftovers and trials that were at the time deemed too heavy or too experimental and worked on them and said "Fickanzeria it, let's put the lot on an album". I have over a hundred Zep bootlegs with studio trials and jams from all of their albums and there's a lot of stuff going on in their earlier jams that ended-up on "Grafffiti" in some form or other. To very good effect indeed. Cheerio lads, always a pleasure.

It's always been interesting to me that each of the LZ albums have sort of an "identity" to them, but because of the "everything bagel" quality of it, 'Physical Graffitti' doesn't feel musically like it speaks one language. 'Coda' is the other album like it, but isn't nearly as good. That being said, the cover does tell you what it's about: a building of many rooms where different things are going on. I remember listening to the album in college in the early 80s and being sort of lukewarm to it: it felt, for some reason, like Jimmy Page heroin music or something like that. But now I think otherwise. It's a great, great album in its diversity and reach.

Loving your reactions to Zeppelin. I've been listening to them for decades, and aside from getting a kick from watching people listen to them for the first time, your insights into the music are brilliant - most people almost forget about JPJ due to his stellar bandmates, but perhaps because you're coming in cold, with no preconceptions about the band members, and just listening to the music you catch just how great he is. Keep up the good work! If you could do some more Jethro Tull reactions then I'd be even more happy!

Gpa worked for the railroad when I was just a lil thing and me Gpa n Gma I would spend summers with and when he was home. We would go on country cruises in his Cherry Red Mustang and me and Gpa would pull over and me n Gma would get out and pick wildflowers and he would let me roll his buglar cigs. This was in the early 70s. I just wonder sometimes what he was doing in car while me n Gma was picking wildflowers. Keep in mind that he was my Grandpa. I suspect he was in the car smoking a joint. I was in high school when this came out (in So Cal so of course we smoked to it that's a given) but this was great on 8 track in my 69 GTO driving around Newport Beach back around 1975. We didn't live there but we partied there in the summer that's for sure lol. This was just a great album when you were young on a sunny day at the beach with the windows rolled down and the stereo turned up. When you drive by people and they grin and yell at you to turn it up you know it's cool back then.

So, I think this a good time to bring this up. LZ only recorded an albums worth of material for Physical Graffiti. The other half are unreleased material from years past. The reason for this is that Plant had vocal surgery and lost the ability to sing in his higher register. They feared it would be too drastic a change for the audience, so they mixed in the unreleased songs. I have a list of previous unreleased and new music. It's funny, because if you exclude the old songs, it's a really solid single album

I am a 64 year old white dude who stumbled upon you guys by accident and what a wonderful pleasant surprise the two of you are. Watching the two of you enjoy some of the music I grew up listening too is refreshing. I could go on but I won't. I want to suggest 3 bands for the 2 of you check out. 1) ELP, Emerson, Lake and Palmer. 1973 album called Brain Salad Surgery. 2) ELO, Electric Light Orchestra. Songs to listen too and videos to watch include Mr. Blue Sky, Telephone Line, Evil Woman and Don't Bring Me Down. There are live videos of ELO you must watch. 3) Mr. GARY Clark Jr. Gary Clark Jr is a very talented flat out great guitar player, someone I stumbled upon about 10 years ago. Some of his songs include "When My Train Pulls In", If Trouble Was Money, Bright Lights. Again there are live videos out there on Gary Clark Jr. If you haven't heard of these bands look them up.

I've been trying lately to hear associations between this albums' songs and the songs on the previous albums from the years these songs were recorded. I don't think I've come up with much, and I think that may be because Zep created such a variety of musical styles in their work after their first two albums that everything just sounds like Zep. Anyway, I made these lists so I thought I'd post them in case anyone else is interested. Yes this song is just Zep continuing great rock grooves, with a catchy pop element - they perfected it. The next track, Trampled Underfoot, is very Stevie Wonder influenced and Kashmir after that is a different ball game. I think because Physical Graffiti is such a long album by their standards, it has a lot of ‘standard’ Zep rock grooves mixed in with other styles that come later. They could have boiled it down to 8 different tracks and made it more different overall but they had quite a few tunes ready to go so they included it all.

Eight of the songs were completely new, seven were previously recorded but weren't included on albums 3-5 for various reasons, some of which was vinyl was just limited on space, or for some reason the band didn't feel the song fit the rest of the "feel" of the albums. The eight new songs ran longer than two sides but instead of cutting any of them out like they did on previous albums when they ran out of space, they decided to make a double, which was the perfect time to include other songs that hadn't yet made it onto an album.

You bring up an interesting point at the end of this video. On all the Zep albums that came before this one, they seemed to jump around to various styles of music, but on this one, they don’t jump around as much. The band developed their sound on all the previous albums and here became comfortable being themselves, which is a combination of all those styles.

The wikipedia page to this album gives all the details for recording dates. It came out late (jan 1975) because of the cover art, but the tracks were all recorded between 71-74. This didn't make the cut of the Houses album because they thought it sounded too much like other better songs like D'yer Maker or Dancing Days. PS having bought it when it came out and seen the tour in 1975 we smoked to ALL the tunes!!!!! LOL It was the age of albums not Spotify. An ALBUM meant something back then. FM radio was the shit. AM was for superficial fans who bought 45's (singles)

Congrats on reaching 20 K subscribers. See y'all reaching 100 K real quick. Is there any other band like Led Zeppelin ? I think not. And y'all's channel is one-of-a-kind, too. Laid back dudes [ hey -- one of y'all just said "laid back" right when I typed "laid back" ... cool, man ] with extensive knowledge of the ins and outs of music mechanics. Keep on r'actin .

I love the way Jimmy Page can play 4 Guitar parts simultaneously. He must have 12 arms. Jimmy could play Rhythm & Lead at the same time. It's one of those music miracles. When they played LIVE there were giant holes in their sound because Jimmy could only play one Guitar. One of my saddest discoveries of my teen years in the 70's was hearing Zeppelin LIVE. Bands with 2 Guitarists sound much better. Zeppelin were a great studio Band with their multi-tracking and over dubs. I really respect Bands that record LIVE in the studio.

Y'all shouldn't be making these definitive statements about this album just yet. You think they don't experiment anymore? Just wait. You've done 4 out of 15 songs. There's a lot left to hear.

One of my favorite Page riffs. And, according to Page, they didn't put it on Houses of the Holy because it didn't fit. That is, it didn't have the same vibe as the other tunes on Houses. I agree. It fits much better on Physical Graffiti.

Oh it gets experimental. This one could be compared to The White album from The Beatles in that that they just threw all kinds of stuff on it. With time different songs will rotate as your favorite if you keep listening (but that's kind of the case with all songs by great bands). The Rover is one of my first songs I learned full on guitar because it fit whole on acoustic with a cool solo, in high school like 10 years ago. Zeppelin is just the essence of rocknroll.

That's something about early Zeppelin...they didn't do many songs you could dance to. Those full stops and long breaks made it really awkward, or just plain stupid. But then, I never was much of a dancer anyways... :)
