They can't leave the hotel for screaming fans but I just breezed through the hotel foyer, totally unnoticed, went out and bought myself a coffee at a pavement cafe and read my newspaper. But I still get to sample the Groupies at the after-party". LOL

Some bands are like that. When Niel Peart of Rush took a several year hiatus after losing his only daughter to a car accident and his wife to cancer 9mos later, basist/vocalist said "we thiught we were done. I don't want to play in Rush with any other 2 guys. It is the band, us 3 guys. There's no replacing anyone in this band." Fortunately, Niel came back for several awesome more years before brain cancer took him earlier this year. And now Rush, sadly, is done. Like these 3 friends, the best bands are true friends, Bonham and Plant particularly being close in Led Zeppelin.

I was a skinny teenager with broken glasses and a rock and roll heart. I went alone to their concert in Texas, my first ever. They opened with this song. Jimmy and Robert were larger than life and the power and propulsion from Bonham's drums overwhelmed my emotions. It is still one of my most vivid memories.
@burntumbrage6868 Жыл бұрын
Aw, you lucky bastard! I wish I had that memory! Plus, back in that time, you went to a concert - any concert but particularly a Zepp performance - you were there for the experience; no phones, no video, no cameras…people melted into the shared experience and had nothing but the memory to take away. Honestly, you have something valuable.

@Ram444 жыл бұрын
No autotune of course, but this live version is not entirely from Long Beach. The yell was edited from the first night in LA where he was able to hit it ONCE. His voice cracked on all other attempts at those two shows. By June 1972 he no longer could do the TRUE Immigrant Song yell as he did in 1970. He had to do a falsetto yell in 1972. Still effective but nowhere near the POWER of Robert Plant at his best. A shame he lost that range and power so early.
@nick2606824 жыл бұрын
TheWraithkrown zzzz these auto tune comments are tedious. There have been great singers from all eras. For example, I happen to prefer led zep music, but Rag and Bone Man’s voice is way, way better than Plant’s ever was. Search any of his live videos and you’ll see what I mean.

"Immigrant Song" was written during Led Zeppelin's tour of Iceland, Bath and Germany in the summer of 1970. The opening date of this tour took place in Reykjavik, Iceland, which inspired Plant to write the lyrics. He explained in an interview: We weren't being pompous ... We did come from the land of the ice and snow. We were guests of the Icelandic Government on a cultural mission. We were invited to play a concert in Reykjavik and the day before we arrived all the civil servants went on strike and the gig was going to be cancelled. The university prepared a concert hall for us and it was phenomenal. The response from the kids was remarkable and we had a great time. 'Immigrant Song' was about that trip and it was the opening track on the album that was intended to be incredibly different. Six days after Led Zeppelin's appearance in Reykjavik, the band performed the song for the first time in concert during the Bath Festival.

A few years ago XM radio had a special channel of only Led Zeppelin music. I'm like...they played that? That's them? I loved black dog in Jr hi. I did know that was them? Nope. I discovered so many of the songs I liked where led zeppelin songs. So I'm on a quest to get all the albums ( ok cds cause I don't have a record player any more) not just the box sets but the actual cds to hear them in the original order. @mickey7411 Yeah they did. The song Taurus, by Spirit. It's in court as we speak, with a ruling sometime next year. Try not to call people fools unless you're absolutely certain on something, otherwise the irony is too great to bear.
Zepplin made a concert movie called "The Song Remains the Same". You HAVE TO watch entire movie. You won't believe where all those strange sounds were made. With the movie you get to watch how much punishment that guitar and those drums endured.

I have had the very good fortune to have been born in 1951...and after I returned from Vietnam (30 months there!) I saw Led Zeppelin in tampa twice, once in Mesa Arizona and once in Atlanta. The BAD part of being born in 1951 is....I am 70 now, and aint got a buncha time left. But omg the music I listened to. Just ... nothing like it before....nothing like it since... not just LZ, but so very many bands... ELO, EL&P, Jefferson Starship, Canned Heat, Santana, Todd Rundgren, Chicago, King Crimson, Pink Floyd and on and on and on and on. Just no boundaries.....no formulas.... just exceptional music. Derek & the Dominoes, Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Stones, Doors, Zappa, oh...the Beatles, then as solos, Harrison, Lennon, McCarthy, Starr, James Gang, .what a great time to be a music freak...radio stations played entire albums..start to finish...imagine "Dark Side of the Moon" the entire album being played on the radio!!!.Sometimes these were called "underground" radio stations and music. Not popular...just damn good was all. Has stood the test of time.

I saw Zeppelin in Dallas, '73 Houses of the Holy tour; they played 3 solid hours, but didn't play this one, just about my favourite of theirs. Now I think I see why. This here was one year earlier and he was having trouble hitting that high note. God love Plant; he laid down a magnificent blueprint of vocals on all those records that subsequent wear and tear would make difficult to reproduce. It's the same situation as Keith Moon found himself in, in his last years. His boundless manic energy which he had put into their records had all but dried up by then; he'd be exhausted after a set.

Achilles Last Stand is one of those songs that hardcore Zeppelin fans like but probably isn't the best song to recommend to new Led Zeppelin listeners. The thing with Soul Train Bro is he's listened to a lot of Led Zeppelin songs before listening to Achilles Last Stand. He was already a fan at that point when he dived into the song. If I remember correctly, he did Achilles Last Stand several months and several songs after his first listen of Led Zeppelin.
