At 8:47 that triplet fill by John Bonham is part of the greatness of Led Zeppelin and why they really couldn't carry on after he died - he could throw that fill (or fills like it) in at anytime he wanted live. The level of musicianship combined with the spontaneity these 4 guys had together was off the charts. Bands would be trying to nail that drum fill for days and have to re-record and overdub it into the recording. He hit it live, as they were playing the song live, in the studio as the tape was rolling.

We sat round and listened to it and it blew my mind. I already had a couple of Zeppelin albums and this was just too good to be true. I went out and bought it the next day. One of LZ's most powerful songs. Original blues song by Blind Willie Johnson, "Jesus Make Up My Dying Bed." You gotta see the live version from Earls Court, 1975; fire! At the end of the studio recording, Robert said "Make it my dying cough." lol They were kidding around.
@joeldf68593 жыл бұрын
Except that it's not original to Blind Willie either. He recorded "Jesus Make Up My Dying Bed" in '27, released in '28, but the roots of the song go back before that. Lyrics to "Jesus goin' a-make up my dyin' bed" were actually transcribed in a book about unknown street singers published in 1925, so some of the lyrics go back to who knows how far before that. Reverend JC Burnett recorded a song called "Jesus Is Going to Make Up Your Dying Bed" in '26. Blind Willie's version came after that. By '33, Josh White recorded "Jesus Gonna Make Up My Dying Bed" and other variations between '44-'46 as "In My Time of Dying". That one was the basis for Bob Dylan's version in '62 and Zeppelin's version here in '75. There's several other variations along the way as well, but the point is that for those that think this is a Blind Willie original (not saying just you), just don't really know the history of it. In fact a lot of blues songs have lines that carry down from before much of them were recorded on wax cylinder, direct to disc, or later, on tape.
