That drum riff after “take me home” is unbelievable. But it’s the production too. Notice how the volume swells to create maximum impact. Bonham and Page were a genius partnership. That’s what gave Zeppelin that special edge - The synchronization between Page and Bonham.

I think George Thoroughgood was listening to this over and over to get his sound. Mixed with Buddy Holly. But ultimately it's all going back to cotton picking and sharecroppers sounds. Remember that Elvis's family so poor he grew up a few years with black sharecroppers. He gave credit of his soul rock vibes to that time of his life. But he really should have been more vocal about it. But he did give credit where it's due.

I never really understood it as a kid learning to play the drums as to why Bonzo was so in tune with the band and why his playing was so intricate. Then it struck me, he had an affinity for playing with and accenting the lead guitar and the bass at the same time. I've tried to emulate that ever since. This song is perfect example of his ability to do that. One of his most difficult beats to master, other than the shuffle he uses in Fool in the Rain. Most drummers will pick one or the other and they either sound monotone and steady behind the beat (think Charlie Watts) or they are all over the place trying to get attention (think Keith Moon). Bonzo was a master at being both. That's why he is and always will be the greatest drummer of all time.

I’m also a drummer. I got a book to learn some of the hits. It approximates the song but you have to have natural feel and you have to flow with the guitar and bass or you won’t ever sound like him. As if that was possible.

As others have mentioned, the album cover was taken from St. Marks Place in New York. What made the album design even more fun is the windows are all die-cut and it came with cardboard inserts in the album that had other images so you could switch around what was showing in the windows by changing the insert. The "Physical Graffiti" title itself came from Jimmy and was meant to evoke the combined physical, mental, and emotional effort it took to record an album with the outward expression of it, exploding it out like "graffiti" to cover the world. It's a double album that includes songs that came from the LZ III days up to the present; it's gritty, raw, hard, balanced with sparkling beauty and fun. It's also the first album released on the band's new record label called Swan Song. This album was so strong, it brought the previous 5 albums back onto the charts. This song is a reworking of the song by Blind Willie Johnson from 1927 called "Jesus Make Up My Dying Bed", which, is itself adapted from older traditional sources and had already been covered by other artists such as Bob Dylan. In it, Jimmy plays slide throughout on his Danelectro guitar set to an open E tuning, Jonesy plays fretless bass and Bonzo's drums pummel you into submisssion. It's yet another great example of Zep's "light and shade" dynamics which allow the listener to flow on a journey of hard rock/heavy blues. The ending was actually just them jamming because they hadn't planned out a proper song ending yet. The chatter at the end is Bonzo coughing, Robert saying "cough" then you can hear Bonzo say "That's gonna be the one, isn't it?" and someone in the booth says "Come have a listen then." as Bonzo replies "Oh yes, thank you." Later after Robert's car accident, supposedly he didn't like to sing the song, feeling it hit a little too close to home. An excellent live performance of this is from Earls Court. If you search for it on KZbin, it's called "Led Zeppelin - In My Time of Dying - 1975 Earls Court" and is 12 minutes and 23 seconds.

@@henriettaskolnick4445 I don't know your age but I do remember every Christmas for a few years, as a small child when this album came out as a young teen, when I was little, we each got a cardboard with a picture similar to the album cover. It was usually from England. With usually 25 little paper doors. You open a door each December day, and a little flat wrapped chocolate from England would be behind that paper door. When you take the chocolate, it would have a little scripture or reference to scripture to look up. So every time I see this album, I remember when I was a little kid, and that sometimes we would open the doors early to get more chocolate, and carefully close it to make it look unviolated. I remember siblings stealing chocolates in this technique. I remember I paid very little attention to the sermons and references LoL!

I used to listen to this song three times in a row while getting right for the everyday grind of an eighth grader life. I was properly pumped when I left the house every morning. "I don't need geometry proofs, I have Physical Graffiti" was my general attitude. It almost worked.

They made middle school geometry unnecessarily difficult. At that young age, we need to see the application for that algebra and geometry before the 2 inch thick textbook with very few words, mostly numbers in mysterious graphs and symbols. Meanwhile history lessons omitting ugly truth that white nationalist agenda was afraid we couldn't handle. Yet that rocket science geometry and algebra 'was just peachy'. Definitely kept history lessons as last homework to spend time on. It was a conspiracy. At least here in the south (Texas and Florida public textbook board members evangelical white nationalists, documented).

Everything that made Zeppelin great is showcased in this song--their outstanding cover of "In My Time Of Dying". The four right people at the right time. Plant's manic vocals, Page's slide guitar & foot pedal wizardry, and, most especially, the way JPJ's bass and Bonham's drums are locked together, especially in the middle section where they picked things up, as you put it. I submit that Jones and Bonham were the greatest rhythm section in Rock music. Another great reaction, gentlemen. You're both gonna have fun with the rest of this album.

Bonham & JPJ's percussion and bass foundation really is everything with Zeppelin. It gives the perfect space for Jimmy's original riff work to exist, and Plant had a natural instinct for what he was hearing. He's pretty amazing, even I myself am guilty of not giving Plant his due. He's kind of an odd guy, but as lead singers go a decent chap. But his legendary vocals are so noticable because he knows where to sing, in what parts. Sometimes not where most singers would be. Then adds the grunts and wailing sounds exactly where a blues singer would put them. It was indeed a perfect storm of the correct formula talent. They never had the big dust ups within. Bonham's drinking probably cost them 2+ more masterpieces, but then again: He was 1/4th why any existed at all as well. Common theme with the era, but Zeppelin managed to stay together longer than most great bands. With amazing results.

Actually, it was Robert Plant who brought Bonzo to the band. When they were still rehearsing as The New Yardbirds, Robert told Jimmy that he knew a drummer that was far better than the one they were using. The rest is history.

You guys said in this video what I have been saying for over 35 years, that Bonzo's drums are the lead instrument on this recording of this song. You do have to watch a live performance to hear the end of the song, because they only ever finished it onstage, without the cough. It blew me away when I saw them line in Greensboro in 1977.

For the sharp-eyed Zep fans out there: the actual buildings from St. Mark's Place have one more floor in height than the buildings on the album cover. That means the real buildings are not "square" in height/width. In order for them to fit perfectly on a square album sleeve, they chopped out one of the floors from the photo to make the shape of the artwork square. As a native NY'er, I figured this out on one of my trips to see these buildings in person. ;)

This is easily one of my top five Led Zeppelin songs. Their spin on a gospel blues traditional. The interplay between Page and Bonham is transcendent. Great bass line and of course, Plant's voice which is an instrument itself. Ends side one of my favourite Zeppelin album with a bang!!!!

This song was originally called Jesus make up my dying bed by blind willie Johnson in 1928 and was covered by Bob Dylan and Led Zeppelin and called in my time of dying .Yes Jimmy is playing his 59 Danelectro slide guitar, but bonzo does steal the show on this one. They play an amazing live version with video from the 1975 show at earls court. I overlooked this song until later in life when I was looking for new zeppelin material. It’s pretty amazing the sound they could make together. They were a band with no limits

The band forced the label into putting this two disk record out at a specific price point. Their bargaining chip, they could leave the label at anytime for they had fulfilled all their contractual obligation to this point. Listen closely to Robert Plant as he sings...many of his sounds are imitating lovemaking. 'A Whole Lotta Love' is known for the moaning and screaming. It wears you out! Watching my granddaughter's face turn red as she realized the gist of the song was priceless.

That building I've passed thru there at least 100 times its in St Marks street in the East Village and when I was invited to have tea with Pagey's girlfriend Scarlett at their hotel a few blocks away I walked passed by there because I was overwhelmed by being in the same hotel that they were staying .....Pagey is playing a slide guitar...indeed! I’m getting the vibe that you guys aren’t as blown away by Physical Graffiti as you hoped - or as we hoped!! I adore The Rover but you weren’t overjoyed at that. Then I thought you’d definitely be blown by this but you weren’t. Maybe you feel it’s all variations on what they’ve done before or maybe it was built up by us fans to be such a brilliant album that you couldn’t help but be disappointed. It’s still brilliant. It needs more listens. And I know track 6 Kashmir will blow you away. If it doesn’t then I’ll pack my bag and go home!!

We’re enjoying this album but it hasn’t hit me like Houses Of The Holy yet. There were a few on Houses of the Holy that blew me away instantly. This album sounds great but I’m waiting for that ONE to blow my hat off.

I get it. The Rain Song is hard to follow! Plus you’ve been listening to a lot of Zep and we’ve ramped your expectations up so much for this one. I’m watching your Pink Floyd reactions now😊👍. I’d love you to dive into my favourite band, Radiohead but they are an acquired taste and not as universally popular as Zep or Floyd. But they are the modern innovators and genius band of modern rock and their influence from the 90’s and 00’s has been very far reaching, well ahead of their time, superb musicians with a big emotional heart and scythe like intelligence, predicting much of our modern ills well ahead of time. They have traversed rock, electronic, jazz and classical music. I reckon your musical ear would get it. I’d start with OK Computer, Kid A and In Rainbows. And they do have a voraciously dedicated fan base, so they bring a cult following and viewing numbers.

Kirk, what would you have La and Che do? They love Zeppelin. If you have been paying attention, they have done more Zeppelin reviews than any other band probably. We all have different tastes and things in common. You're hooked on Zeppelin, great! Some of us are hooked on Black Sabbath, Rush, Pink Floyd, ZZ Top, Steve Winwood, Pete Townshend, etc. But you listen to all of it. Because when you go back to your favorites, it either clarifies your passion or you expand your horizons. I want to hear some Temptations, Ohio Players and Earth Wind and Fire. And Ian Dury and Trapeze etc. But Zeppelin is great. What's not to love? I just don't want to get burnt out on one band too much. Unless it's Rush. Then I'll be sounding like you maybe. But I won't criticize La and Che. They have played some requests as personal favors that sometimes not the greatest songs. But they do it out of respect for different tastes. Diversity matters, especially in music.

Greg, I’m not criticising them. It’s just an observation than they’re not as blown away by this as I had hoped - maybe that’s me not managing my expectations realistically, I’ve been looking forward to them doing this album for ages so it’s probably my issue.. I know they love Zep, I’ve watched it all, many vids multiple times! I think they’re great and I’m watching more and more of them. I certainly didn’t mean for my comment to be a criticism, I wasn’t being mean spirited or anything.

@@AirplayBeats I'm with you guys. To me Houses of the Holy was their peek. I think this album is too long and has some filler songs. IMHO, it's not the masterpiece some people believe it to be. The spark is rarely there. I think they simply ran out of ideas. It happens to lots of artists. It's hard to follow your own act after so many good albums.

This song live at Earls Court, the May 25,1975 version is absolutely mind blowing. This particular date is the best audio & visual, & one of my 2 favorite live performances. You guys definitely need to checkout some lives, some cases they are even better live, with better solos & improv.

All of this was in one take except for the guitar overdubs. I want to say it was the very first take. Not 100% sure of that. If not then it was the second take but no more than that. That’s why you hear Robert’s voice cracking, it was live. That’s what I love about Zep, they leave mistakes in.
