~~~~~
Lyrics: Led Zeppelin - Kashmir
[Instrumental Intro]
[Verse 1]
Oh, let the sun beat down upon my face
With stars to fill my dreams
I am a traveler of both time and space
To be where I have been
Sit with elders of the gentle race
This world has seldom seen
Talk of days for which they sit and wait
All will be revealed
[Verse 2]
Talk and song from tongues of lilting grace
Whose sounds caress my ear
But not a word I heard could I relate
The story was quite clear
Oh, oh
Oh, oh
[Verse 3]
Ooh, baby, I been flying
No yeah, mama, there ain't no denying
Ooh, yeah I've been flying
Mama, mama, ain't no denying, no denying
[Verse 4]
All I see turns to brown
As the sun burns the ground
And my eyes fill with sand
As I scan this wasted land
Trying to find, trying to find, where I've been
[Verse 5]
Oh, pilot of the storm who leaves no trace
Like thoughts inside a dream
Here is the path that led me to that place
Yellow desert stream
My Shangri-La beneath the summer moon
I will return again
Sure as the dust that floats high in June
When movin' through Kashmir
[Verse 6]
Oh, father of the four winds, fill my sails
Across the sea of years
With no provision but an open face
Along the straits of fear
Oh, oh
Oh, oh
[Bridge]
[Verse 7/Outro]
When I'm on, when I'm on my way, yeah
When I see, when I see the way, you stay-yeah
Ooh, yeah-yeah, oh, yeah-yeah, when I'm down
Ooh, yeah-yeah, oh, yeah-yeah, but I'm down, so down
Ooh, my baby, oh, my baby, let me take you there
Come on, let me take you there...let me take you there
This is one of two of the best reactions I’ve ever seen of LZ. I saw your “Achilles Last Stand” reaction yesterday too. There is a version of it live from this very same concert. You should check it out. Jimmy Page did the guitar to a PDiddy song for the movie Godzilla, which used the Kashmir riff. By the way, don’t worry about what to say too much. We get it. A lot of us have been living with the same effect you get from their music for a very long time. I enjoy seeing someone discover it.
I was a junior in High School and my parents gave me the $17.00 for two tickets (THAT'S RIGHT $8.50 A TICKET) and let me take off two days of school to get in line at the race track on the state fairgrounds for tickets to see Led Zeppelin in concert at the Myriad in Okla City. It was the middle of winter and got in line on Thursday for the tickets to go on sale Sunday morning, the warmest it got while waiting outside in line was 18 degrees. So cold that the 50/50 mix of coke and 151 proof rum in the two quarts of rum we took with us froze solid but I stayed pretty warm inside two Amry issue down sleeping bags with an army blanket between them . Thousands of people in line partying. Despite the cold it was worth every second. One of the best times of my life and that was just getting the tickets. The concert lasted about 3 hours with no warm up band just Zep ..as you can expect was out of this world.
Memories Light the corners of my mind Misty watercolor memories Of the way we were Scattered pictures Of the smiles we left behind Smiles we gave to one another For the way we were Can it be that it was all so simple then Or has time rewritten every line If we had the chance to do it all again Tell me, would we? Could we? Memories May be beautiful and yet What's too painful to remember We simply choose to forget So it's the laughter We will remember Whenever we remember The way we were The way we were
It really gets me. These "reaction" videos of Kashmir - the people always recognize that initial theme, which is of course one of the most (over)covered themes in the history of rock music ("I know that from somewhere, I can't remember where I heard it from."). Every pinball machine, video game, and college half-time band has this LZ theme in their repertoire. Originality is dead. Just appreciate the fact that Led Zeppelin _invented_ it!
Detrucci Zepp's drummer was one of the best with time signatures. Bonham’s drumbeat is in 4/4, the strings play in a 3/4 feel. The mixture of the two time signatures creates a feel where the strong beat of the drums only aligns with the strong beat of the strings every twelve beats. TOOL (Danny, Justin and Adam) have perfected this and took it to another level. I can hear the similarities in these two great bands. 🤘
I know this is over two years old, this reaction, but if by chance ur still looking to hear some dynamite zeppelin studio magic, and ESPECIALLY drum ferocity like Bonham displayed here, then go straight to "In My Time of Dying" from Physical Grafitti! Live versions (there are two from '75) are of course worshipful, but studio is where the drums reign hardest. Especially the drumming after Plant sings "Oh my Jesus" about 6 times eight minites in (!). YOU will be praising God after that as well, lol! Rock on, man!
Every old guy like me know this song perfectly. I raised with Led Zeppelin, Deep purple, Pink Floyd and the Beatles, because that was the music my father used to listen to, it's a part of my education. For a lot of people like me, Kashmir is a masterpiece (my favorite song from Led Zep). For young people a lot discovered Led Zeppelin, and especially this riff with Puff Daddy who used it for the single Come with me kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKnYoJePYshjr7c . The single itself is not so bad, it was in the soundtrack for Godzilla (great soundtrack, horrible movie...), but the good thing is that a lot of people (re)discovered Kashmir. You probably heard this song, becauise it was also used in movies, advertisement, shows, etc... Jimmy Page and Robert Plant also did a tour, under their name (not Led Zeppelin) and the version of Kashmir with an Egyptian Orchestra is just wonderful. Your reaction was about like mine when I heard "Kashmir" for the first time when it was first released. "Kashmir" is probably the most intricate of all Zep songs and arguable their best. Bonzo was acknowledged to be one of the greatest rock drummers in the world. Who could argue with that? His son Jason Bonham is no slouch either. Check out Robert Plant's second solo album from 1983. "Principle of Moments". Two great ballads on the album are "In the Mood" and "Big Log". Plant is an extremely versatile singer whose voice has held up quite well through these many years, although those extreme high notes are gone forever. I was in a bar band at that time and we covered "Whole Lotta Love", "Heartbreaker" and "Good Times Bad Times". We never could have done "Kashmir" though! -dave
I was there - did you spot me in the crowd ... about half way back I think. Spent the night afterwards sleeping in the back of my old Mini van while my brother slept on the grass verge in a council estate in Stevenage then headed north for a 3 week drive round Scotland.
Where you've heard it = this is a top 5 most iconic rock riffs ever? Keep up the good work keep digging. Also yeah I almost always prefer a good live version of any music, but it's harder to find the gems.
For future reference, except for a few songs, studio versions of their songs are far better then live versions.
Their 2007 London reunion concert version of Kashmir is a must (from the Celebration Day “movie”). Epic. Same magic, chemistry and passion but with a mature restraint and modern equipment. As if 30 years hadn’t passed. Their swan song.
