This song is a Zeppelin arrangement of a song first recorded by Blind Willie Johnson in 1927. You have to listen to the original too, for its historic importance. Willie's voice is just crazy! It will also give you more appreciation of how Zeppelin could take traditional songs and reinvent them! 🤘😎

This is a song about...sorry, I can’t say. Robert is fortunate that Legba didn't take his soul, after this song was recording. Second verse: "...the Devil he taught me to roll..." (times two) Robert was mimicking the guitar riff. When they do it after the intro --- Bonzo and Jonesy do a syncopated beat across Jimmy/Robert's mimmicking. Robert doesn't enough credit for his harmonica playing. This is one of best harnonica solos ever in a rock song - in this song. Robert said near the end "...got a monkey on my back, a-muh, muh, muh, muh monkey, on my back, back, back, back... try to change my ways in life..." Legba is haunting (nowadays he may be referenced to, as "Scratch." Robert recorded this whole album sitting in a wheelchair, as he and family had gotten into a really bad car accident in early Aug 1975 -- just prior to a few months recorded the songs for this record. He shattered his ankle in multiple places and was told by doctors he may not walk again.
