This song is a metaphor for salvation. Metaphorically the reference to gold is the streets of heaven are paved with gold. With a word you can get what you came for - asking for salvation. The sign on the wall with two meanings is the word FAITH, being both her name and the act of having faith in God. The tree by the brook with songbirds who sing and misgiven thoughts is a reference to the devil tempting you. There's a feeling I get when I look to the west and my spirit is crying for leaving - a reference to leaving your sinful life behind as the temples of Jerusalem are in the East. In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees and the voices of those who stand looking - a reference to loved ones who have passed before you and are calling you home. It's whispered that soon if we all call the tune that the piper will lead us to reason and a new day will dawn for those who stand long and the forest will echo in laughter is in reference to those who are saved or baptized are waiting for the second coming of Christ and the reference to the forest laughter is the reunion with loved ones. If there's a bustle in your hedgerow don't be alarmed now, it's just a spring clean for the may queen, yes there are two paths you can go by but in the long run, there's still time to change the road you're on - the bustle in your hedgerow is sins in your soul, the spring clean for the may queen is the forgiveness you receive from God when asked and the reference to the two roads is choosing between good and evil. You're head is humming and it won't go and won't go in case you don't know, the piper's calling you to join him, dear lady can you hear the wind blow and did you know, your stairway lies on the whispering wind - is God calling you home. And as we walk on down the road, our shadows taller than our souls, there walks a lady we all know, who shines white light and wants to to know, how everything still turns to Gold, but if you listen very hard, it will come to you at last, where all is one and one is all, to be a rock and not to roll. A clear reference to the wonders of heaven (the gold streets again), and the finality of it, eternity, the rock that doesn't roll. It's important to know that "It makes me wonder" and "does anyone remember laughter?" was ad-libbing in live concerts and not on the original track. That's my interpretation. ❤
