The "flute" is a mellotron keyboard. It had the flute sound, strings mixed with brass, and a choral effect. It used to overheat easily. This was a time of fighting with your instrruments while playing, especially keyboards. I love that sound too. Goes great with weed.

No joke, in the last year I have listened to that solo over 100 times... and it still hits me right in the soul EVERY SINGLE TIME. This was 1973 from the concert film called “the song remains the same” filmed at Madison square garden in NYC. Led Zeppelin is widely regarded as the best rock group of all time, they had few peers then, and none at all now. Enjoyed the reaction, do more zeppelin and the views will follow 😉

This is the anthem of rock anthems. The bar that all other rock anthems are judged by. No other song fills me up and makes me feel complete the way Stairway to Heaven does. But all Zep is worthy. I had every album at one time and there was no bad zeppelin. They just evolved is all they did.

I think a lot of people misunderstand the lyrics. JRR Tolkien, a contemporary of C.S. Lewis, writer of Hobbit, Lord of the Rings... also wrote a book called the silmarillion.. .which talked of the world before those stories... the Piper was God, and music was the power in which he created... the elves, looked to the west with longing, their birthplace.. a lady in the Silmarillion and all of the stories, Galadriel, fell in love with God... I actually believe the song came from this.... in the end,... the 'tune will come to you at last'... the realization there is a creator.... very inspiring song

Madison Square Garden, NYC, 1973. This is the sound that us 70’s kids heard any day of the week, blasting out of car radios and our little AM mono-only transistor hand-helds, and packing our record collections at home. And then there was all the other killer music going on - the rise of various fusions of Jazz and Rock, the electrifying sound of Funk at its very best, and more. And those radio stations? The most popular weren’t stuck in one genre, but were called “Middle of the Road” (“MOR”) stations. Yes, they played pretty much every goddamned thing. After “Stairway” got done, you might hear The Jackson 5, or a cut from a terrifying Miles Davis electric album, or Petula Clark singing “Downtown”, or experience a whole Moody Blues LP, while the DJ went out for a smoke or a toke. We got everything thrown at us, whether we chose it or not. No wonder us 70’s kids aren’t impressed by the claustrophobic little hidey-holes music’s stuck in right now, and how, tellingly, nobody seems to know how to really play with each other anymore. Once you’ve lived in the world Music and musicians are capable of, there’s no going back. How do you get us stuffed back into a drum machine box, after we’ve heard Led Zeppelin? 🔥🌪️⚡️

Great song...1971...Number 1 on FM RADIO for decades. The song offers two roads people might be on in life. Materialistic or a more Spiritual road. One can always get back on the right road. The metaphors and visionary aspects are abstract and difficult to interpret and each will have their own meaning.

Not a flute - that part was done with a soprano recorder on the studio version of this song. But, in this live video, it was John Paul Jones on the mellotron approximating the bass, tenor and soprano recorders and bass guitar tracks he had recorded for the studio version. It's the only way John Paul Jones could play the four different instruments simultaneously at a live concert.

At the start of the video thats the Brooklyn Bridge in the foreground and the World Trade Center buildings in the background. Which obviously are no longer there. :( If no one mentioned it yet, this concert happened in 1973 at Madison Square Garden in NYC. It was released as a film, "the Song Remains the Same, in 1976. A group today that can give a great performance like this? You should check out a group called "Dream Theater." They are the ebst group nobody has ever heard of. They have been around since 1988 and have over a dozen studio albums and around 8 live dvds. They don't have the same raw feeling and emotion of this song but the things this band can do will blow your mind. Every member of this group is just an amazing performer and their music is so complicated it will leave you wondering how they can even play it. But they can also make some very nice ballads too. This is one of their more, Straight forward, main stream less complicated songs. They made this "simpler" song as a protest to the record companies wanting to be more mainstream. And it actually became pretty big hit for them. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3rcoHqGhNykgq8&ab_channel=RHINO Check out the guitar solo at 6:14.

That solo which was totally improvised by Jimmy Page is the reason Jimmy Page is one of the top 5 greatest guitarists in history of rock. If you want to see another insane solo by Jimmy watch "Dazed and Confused" from the same concert it's 25 minutes but worth the time. There is no band out there today that could come close to Led Zeppelin live. You have this in one band. Robert Plant- One if the best lead singers ever. Jimmy Page- one of the top 5 guitarists in rock history. John Paul Jones- One of the best bassist in rock. Who just happens to play great keyboards. John "Bonzo" Bonham- the greatest drummer in history. Listen to Heart's cover of Stairway to Heaven at the Kennedy Center Honors program. The show honored Led Zeppelin's contributions to music. Robert Plant says it's the best cover of Stairway to Heaven he's ever heard.
