I was blessed and fortunate enough to see Zeppelin live at "Live Aid," 1985, Philadelphia, RFK Stadium. Phil Collin played drums, but Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones were there. They played this song and every single person in that stadium was standing up, including myself. I had tears in my eyes and remember feeling one and part of the universe, the stars were out and I looked up.... Speechless and breathless. Jimmy Page's guitar solo had me in heaven. They also played "Rock and Roll," and "Black Dog.," but "Stairway to Heaven" took me to heaven! 😋

Your smile through out this performance says it all. I probably heard this song a million times and it doesn't get old. The guitar is a double neck Gibson EDS-1275, basically a double neck SG. The top neck is a 12 string and the bottom neck is a 6 string. You can see him switch from the 12 string to the 6 string right before he starts playing one of the best and iconic guitar solos in history.

This live extended version has to be the greatest guitar solo ever. I was just as amazed when I first saw 'The Song Remains the Same' . .. I worked at the National gallery in London for many years. In the late 90`s I had the pleasure of working alongside a smashing chap from Denver Colorado. In 1976 he and his brother secured tickets for LZ`s show at MSG during the "Physical Graffiti" tour. He said he could barely sleep with excitement in the weeks before the show. He said the concert was so good, so unforgettable, that to this day he`s not quite sure if it actually happened or if he just dreamt it all.

Even though you can't see it that well, this version of the song still brings tears to my eyes. The sheer magnitude of the original song is out-performed live. Jimmy's solo is from another planet.
@michaeldavid6284
@michaeldavid6284 2 жыл бұрын
Totally disagree. Live performances are exciting and often a great, memorable experience, but the original studio version of tunes are almost always superior. I've been a Zep fan for decades, and that is certainly the case with almost all of their songs, and expecially Stairway To Heaven. The audio quality and the artistry of the production is miles above what could be attempted and performed live. That's not a knock or criticism of Led Zeppelin or any other band.

@michael david I know thgis is sacriligeous, but go watch Jimmy play Ten Years Gone with the Black Crowes, simply THE best song i have ever seen live, (i wasn't there, but you understand). The only Zeppelin song better than Zeppelin. I so wish Jeff and Eric had got up on stage with Zeppelin to do it live. Also sorry, but i disagree with your disagree, the 73 MSG Stairway is simply sublime, that solo is the best solo ever in my opinion.
@TucoBenedicto
@TucoBenedicto Жыл бұрын
@@michaeldavid6284 Well, tough luck for you, because THIS version of the solo is my favorite by a LANDSLIDE, even if you disagree. The fact that it follows the original track only loosely and that half of it is on-the-spot improv only contributes to make it even more outstanding. And I say thins as someone who learned to love the song with its studio version and was originally heavily biased toward it.

There was also an iconic poster of Robert and Jimmy from the movie I had hanging on my bedroom wall next to the 2 posters from Dark Side of the Moon and my Castle on the Hill blacklight poster. This performance, and all 3 nights there, were included in their movie "The Song Remains the Same".

Jimmy is p-laying a Gibson EDS-1275 "Doublerneck" guitar . The top neck is a twelve string and the bottom one is a six string neck. He used the twelve string neck to bring fullness and to better replicate the acoustic and 12 string guitar parts on the record, then he switches to the six string neck for the blistering solo..On the studio record he used a Harmony Sovereign H1260 acoustic guitar and a Fender Electric XII 12 string for the main guitar parts, and for the solo, Page used a 1959 Fender Telecaster that Jeff Beck had gifted him after using it extensively in the Yardbirds.

I've literally listened to this version about a thousand times, and it never gets old for me; the song, musically, is about energy, motion, space and time and lyrically, it takes one on a mystical and spiritual journey to the center of their own souls. It's truly astounding on so many different levels. Page's solo is not of this earth; he makes his guitar sing, cry, laugh and wail and transcend our earthly plane. Compositionally, it's mind-blowing as well; covering gentle, Celtic-based folk at the beginning to a more jazzy, up-tempo style in the middle and climaxes in a stunning full-on rock anthem at the end. And the performances? Is there anyone, at any time, who were cooler and had better showmanship than these guys?? I think NOT. Still gives me goosebumps; how could it not?

I was lucky enough to see them perform this song live at the Greensboro Coliseum in May of 1977 at the tender age of 15. They were my favorite band and my older sister and her boyfriend were nice enough to let me tag along with them since I didn't even have my driver's license yet. Edit to add I also almost died to this song...the memory just popped into my head after reminiscing about the concert I mentioned above. I was on my way to the beach to meet up with my best friend who was already down there. There was an 18 wheeler driving slowly in the left lane (4 lane highway with 2 lanes on each side but out in the country). I moved into the right lane to pass him and he took a right turn into a driveway (didn't see that coming). I swerved to the right barely missing his cab and ended up laying my car down into a drainage ditch that ran along the right side of the highway. When I came to a stop this song was still playing on my cassette deck. True story!

Hey Verdi! I am just really enjoying your channel. You look at music the way I look at music. With an open mind. The only way to truly appreciate a song is by not trying to define it before you hear it. One thing most people do is define what genre of song I’m listening to. Metal or folk or punk, etc. I used to do it myself. I was a bit of a Rock snob. Some songs weren’t hard enough for me. I was stupid back then. ALL MUSIC IS IMPORTANT. To me all music is derivative. Musicians let a little bit of whatever they listen to subconsciously creep into whatever they are creating. Every song should be judged on its own merits. Even with bands you don’t really like that much, you just never know. There are plenty of bands with one hit. Just one. And it’s really good. There are gems buried in some album you never heard of. It’s the beauty of music. THANKYOU Verdy. Also whole album reviews is awesome. There’s a flow to a record. Songs are in a certain order for a reason. Lastly Alice Coopers Love it to death album or Killer album would be great. I feel he’s being underrated and under represented on reaction channels.

Glad you are doing the video. All of us that were teens when this came out loved Stairway. The only awkward part was when they played it at dances. You would start out slow dancing and then kind of fast dancing at the end. I was just amazing to watch them. Was lucky to see them at the Pontiac Silverdome (Detroit stop) with 80,000 of my like minded friends.

You have a rare talent sweetheart.......you play guitar right handed and drums left handed. I started playing guitar when I was 4 and drums when I was 8. I've been a professional drummer for over 50 years and I can only play instruments right handed. Bravo! ✌️♥️🇬🇧

😍 Exactly as they wrote in the comments before me! At first I regretted not having subtitles so I could at least have an automatic translation, but your reactions are familiar even without knowing English! It is a pleasure to see that even after so long this music brings joy! 😍

Really happy to see young people discovering music we grew up with. Thank you for being real and curious about music. Watching you rock-out is wonderful. Hoping you will discover “Dire Straits” and “Mark Knopfler” soon

Hi , great reaction! LZ has been my favorite since high school ( which was in the early 70s) . My friend and I were so excited when we got tickets to see them in Toronto. Just weeks before the concert Bonzo passed away and it was cancelled! So close. As far as I know they never toured again with another drummer.

I waited for tickets in a very long line, after just one radio announcement that tickets are on sale NOW! at 330pm one afternoon in 1975. They sold out before I was even 200 people closer. (That was in 1975). In 1977 my sister got 4 tickets and I got to see them. The drummer John Bonham died before they ever came around again. Kind regards, Scott Rowland

Picture an 11 yr old with headphones in winter 1977, sitting next to my Father's turntable. Gazing out the large front window of newly built suburbia homes. This version was printed in my brain, as imagined feelings and faces and wondering how to play it. The live sound of Madison Square Garden. I didn't see the movie till many years later.

Thank you do very much Verdy I really enjoyed listening to one of the Greatest Rock n' Roll Bands ever. If you get the chance, the time, the opportunity could you play another one of my favorites? It is calped "Texas Flood" by (SRV) Stevie Ray Vaughn "L-I-V-E". I really would appreciate it very, very much with your reaction that means so very much to me? Thank you. Have a Blessed Evening. Adios.
