Considered one of the best rock songs ever written. It starts out slow and keeps climbing...you know, like a stairway.

@@Lucmercurius You're absolutely correct, but the Pied Piper is more of a biblical analogy than pure legend. The Pied Piper is suppose to be a satanic amalgam for pretty much all evil. Polyphonic had a great video about how this song mimics the classic hero's journey, and follows a story structure more than a song structure. It starts off slow and tranquil, gradually builds and builds until a climax (the guitar solo at the end), followed by a falling action as it comes down from its high point and ends quietly again.

Wow it is about time! Those lyrics. The way those lyrics play into the structure of the song. You could write a philosophical and practical book on the meaning of those lyrics. It more or less describes the journey of Tarot depictions of the Fool mastering the Universe. When All are One, and One is All... To be a rock and not to roll. Imagine it: When All is One, the rock has no place to roll... Divine stuff! Incredible that this song is immersed into the mainstream of radio music! Follow the Piper's (PAN) calling... It is nothing less than a story about about Ascending above Duality, and reaching the Pinnacle of Achievement!

*To understand Stairway you have to keep European folklore and tradition in mind. Lucky for us there are some clues, that tip you off in the lyrics.* 1. Sometimes words have two meanings. 2. It's Just a Spring Clean for the May Queen. *This is relevant when you look up who the May Queen is. * simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_Queen "The May Queen or Queen of May is a word which has two different but related meanings. It can refer to either a mythical figure or to a holiday personification." "According to popular British folklore, the tradition once had a sinister twist, in that the May Queen was put to death once the festivities were over. The veracity of this belief is difficult to establish, but while in truth it might just be an example of anti-pagan propaganda, frequent associations between May Day rituals, the occult and human sacrifice are still to be found in popular culture today. The Wicker Man, a cult horror film starring Christopher Lee, is a prominent example of this." *The Next line to keep in mind are "The Piper is calling you to join him" Who is the Piper? Well remember the May Queen? and words with two but RELATED meanings right? * Pan the Piper. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pan_(god) "In ancient Greek religion and mythology, Pan (/pæn/;[1] Ancient Greek: Πάν, Pan) is the god of the wild, SHEPHARDS and flocks, nature of mountain wilds, rustic music and impromptus, and companion of the nymphs.[2] He has the hindquarters, legs, and horns of a goat, in the same manner as a faun or satyr. With his homeland in rustic Arcadia, he is also recognized as the god of fields, groves, wooded glens and often affiliated with sex; because of this, Pan is connected to fertility and the season of spring. The ancient Greeks also considered Pan to be the god of theatrical criticism.[3] The word panic ultimately derives from the god's name." Shephards call for their flocks to join them. Pan is also connected to the season of Spring, much like the May Queen herself. "Pan's goatish image recalls[citation needed] conventional faun-like depictions of Satan. Although Christian use of Plutarch's story is of long standing, Hutton (1999) has argued[54] that this specific association is modern and derives from Pan's popularity in Victorian and Edwardian neopaganism. Medieval and early modern images of Satan tend, by contrast, to show generic semi-human monsters with horns, wings, and clawed feet." *Remember the May Queen traditions once had a "Sinister Twist?" Now the Second meaning of the Piper because words have two meanings. * The Pied Piper en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pied_Piper_of_Hamelin "The Pied Piper of Hamelin (German: Rattenfänger von Hameln, also known as the Pan Piper or the Rat-Catcher of Hamelin) is the titular character of a legend from the town of Hamelin (Hameln), Lower Saxony, Germany, as well as the title of the fairy tale that depicts the character. The legend dates back to the Middle Ages, the earliest references describing a piper, dressed in multicolored ("pied") clothing, who was a rat-catcher hired by the town to lure rats away[1] with his magic pipe. When the citizens refuse to pay for this service, he retaliates by using his instrument's magical power on their children, leading them away as he had the rats. This version of the story spread as folklore and has appeared in the writings of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the Brothers Grimm, and Robert Browning, among others." *Again her see a piper calling others to join him, much like the shephard calls his sheep to follow him. (See Pan Above) In this case its rats. But thats not all the only things that follow The Pied Piper. * "Despite the piper's success, the mayor reneged on his promise and refused to pay him the full sum (reputedly reduced to a sum of 50 guilders) even going so far as to blame the piper for bringing the rats himself in an extortion attempt. Enraged, the piper stormed out of the town, vowing to return later to take revenge. On Saint John and Paul's day, while the adults were in church, the piper returned dressed in green like a hunter and playing his pipe. In so doing, he attracted the town's children. 130 children followed him out of town and into a cave and were never seen again. Depending on the version, at most three children remained behind: one was lame and could not follow quickly enough, the second was deaf and therefore could not hear the music, and the last was blind and therefore unable to see where he was going. These three informed the villagers of what had happened when they came out from church.[4][not in citation given] "Other versions relate that the Pied Piper led the children to the top of Koppelberg Hill, where he took them to a beautiful land,[5] or a place called Koppenberg Mountain,[6] or Transylvania, or that he made them walk into the Weser as he did with the rats, and they all drowned. Some versions state that the Piper returned the children after payment, or that he returned the children after the villagers paid several times the original amount of gold." *All that glitters is gold indeed. In short; 1.) Follow the Piper (Music/Musician) 2.) So the May Queen can have her spring clean. (She Rules as Queen so she commands others to do her cleaning i.e. the Piper) 3.) That cleaning involves trading "Glittering gold" Remember it's the May Queen who is paying for "cleaning services." (50 Guilders in the Pied Pipers case, in the case of Musicians Fame and Money) for the stairway to heaven. (The "Stairway to Heaven is Death. How else does one get to heaven? What did the Pied Piper bring to those who followed him?) Why does he get a "feeling" when he looks to the West? Because he is playing the part of the Piper. I.E. the Bringer of death and the Sun sets in the West. Again representing death. In other words end or death of the Day. The meaning of the song is way more Esoteric than you may realize.*

When I was growing up we had a simple test when auditioning guitarists for our band - if you could play the guitar solo from STH, you were in the running, if you couldn't you were out....
