I saw Led Zeplin in 1973 at the sold-out Braves Stadium in Atlanta. The field and all seats were filled. They were horrible!!!! Drunk and on Drugs. It was the biggest concert in Atlanta to this day. Less than halfway through, 2/3's of the audience left....including us. Then we got robbed at gunpoint while getting into the car. Stairway to Heaven sounded like I was in HELL.

I am now 71 years old and experienced this song when it was first released in 1971, and like everyone in my generation, I can tell you we were as mesmerized by it as much then and you are today. Over the many years since Led Zeppelin produced this epic song, I use to listen to the famous radio personality, Casey Cassin. produce his "Countdown to the 100 best songs of all Time" every Fourth of July weekend and this song was repeatedly , year after year, voted as the number one greatest song of all time. It is truly the greatest rock ballad of all time, and Robert Plant's vocal, Jimmy Page's guitar riff and John Henry Bonham's drum solo are one of the greatest of all time. I am truly thankful that I lived through the greatest period in rock music.

The greatest rock song ever by the GOATS

That "flute" sound comes from an instrument called a "Recorder". There a few that are creating a harmony. The keyboardist, John Paul Jones used a mellotron when they played the song live to get that "Recorder" sound. This is still one of my favorite songs of all time.

The guitarist, Jimmy Page wrote the music, while the singer, Robert Plant wrote the lyrics. The flute sound is a 'recorder'.

The flute sound you're hearing is called a Recorder. When Jimmy recorded the lead for this song he did 25 takes to get what he wanted and that is what you here on the studio recording.

@@DTH3000 You better go do some research. According to Jimmy, on the original recording John Paul Jones used a recorder when they played live he used the mellotron.
