Led Zeppelin ushered in my last two years of high school. Led Zeppelin III was a total departure from the first two albums that were blues based on the eponymous album and hard rock and roll on II. This album opens with "The Immigrant Song" a 2 minutes and 26 second song of pure Nordic sonic attack. Then comes the rest of the album which is all folk based. This album had a playful psychedelic cover. In the beginning, this album was not well liked by the critics and buyers because of its departure from the previous albums. Over the years it was recognized as an important album in the progression of the band's music. BTW, "Whole Lotta Love" and "The Immigrant Song" are the only two songs for me that automatically get cranked to 11 when they come on the radio.

I always love when bands leave a little studio banter at the start or end of songs. Also when the leave in a verbal cue or an out of place sound in. There is a Zeppelin song where a plane can be heard flying over the engineer say something along the lines "hold on let me get this plane out" and Robert maybe Jimmy says "No, nah leave it in" and the song starts. Its like they pull back curtain for a quick look into the studio.

You're the blue reflection of a dream Amy. You're breakdowns of these tunes are fantastic. Tangerine was an instant love when I was a child of the 70's. Melancholy hits me I think. Zeppelin did great things. Always bothers me they were wiped out by booze and drugs (Bonham/Page). Relationships got beat up. I wonder, if they kept going in the short lived '79 tour, would they have gotten sober enough to repair things? I remember an interview with someone with or close to Zep-that they would have been fine after a couple weeks.

I'm so glad you have returned to my all-time favorite rock band, even if this is personally one of my least favorite songs of theirs. Although I'm sure their are plenty who happen to really like this piece. I actually really like most of this song, but for me the chorus on this song makes me cringe a bit in its dissonant musical tonality. You likely provided the more specific reasons for this in how you analyzed the chorus, which helps to make the chorus choice make more sense. Great reaction by you. I'm really looking forward to tomorrow's selection. Since while I may not particularly like this one piece, I really enjoy that vast majority of their songs, so the odds are I will like it a lot when you pick a random LZ song.

This is what I really like about Amy and this channel. When I was in high school I heard SO MUCH Led Zep ALL THE TIME. I was constantly hearing my friends talking about how awesome they were and feeling impelled to go along with...and I liked them, don't get me wrong... But then I went to college and realized how wearisomely saturated I was with the band and its music, and for years I tuned it out and rather scorned it I suppose. And along comes Amy, a professional musician who can describe and break down their music in terms other than "awesome" or "amazing" or "best ever", and...I really like that. Amy, you have almost rehabilitated my decades long "Led Zeppelin redux" and that is a minor miracle in my estimation. Thanks!

To me, Tangerine has always felt like underrated among Led Zeppelin fans. Although it's a smaller song, I think it’s one of their best. Like you, I’ve been struck by the the melody and how it connects to the song’s meaning-creating, as you saw, the feeling of echoes from another lifetime. A few of their pieces perhaps also hint at these kind of things. I think it seems to have been "written" and refined over a few years by Jimmy Page, although there's no doubt that Robert understands it the way he sings it.
