Unpopular opinion but this is one of my favorite LZ tracks. The tone on Page’s slide guitar here all drenched in reverb is one of my all time favs. Plus this is one of the only times LZ were lyrically political touching on environmental concerns and on some of experiences they witnessed while touring deep in the American south.

Great comments mate, one thing though, I did read that JPJ actually played the steel guitar on this. Nit pulling you up in this at all it's just what I've been led to believe. If so it just enhances the opinion amongst many Zeppelin fans of the amazing and perhaps underated talent of JPJ.

Page says that he plays acoustic guitar, steel guitar, dulcimer & bass, while JPJ pays mandolin. Below is from Guitar World Jimmy Page Discusses Led Zeppelin III By By Brad Tolinksi, Photo by Ross Halfin published December 23, 2010 ... GW As you mentioned earlier, one of the songs you did work on out in Bron-Y-Aur was “That’s the Way” which is in a G tuning. PAGE There’s a number of tunings on the third album, but I was experimenting with altered tunings going back to the first album. The C tuning on “Friends” was something new, but the open G tuning [low to high, D G D G B D] on “That’s the Way” was pretty conventional. Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson and many others have used it. “That’s the Way,” however, was very exciting to record because it gave us a chance to work with some new acoustic textures. John Paul Jones plays the mandolin on it, and the main breaks on it are taken up with the pedal steel. I couldn’t really play a pedal steel like a pedal steel player, but I could play it like me. [laughs] And right at the end, where everything opens up, I played a dulcimer. GW I never noticed the dulcimer on that. It blends so well with the guitar parts. PAGE I was doing a bunch of overdubs and got excited. John Paul Jones went home, so I put the bass part on it as well! That didn’t happen often, believe me! The open tuning gave the track a lot of space, so we had a great time filling it up. And Robert’s lyrics were superb.

I don’t know if you will see this or not but you asked for my experiences with racism. First, my entire family was born in AL. We were very southern except for our world view. I was incredibly lucky to be born into a military family. My father was a Colonel in the Army, fought in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. He was also posted to secret locations around the world. He and my mother had friends from so many countries and races. No one in my family looked at a person’s race or religion. We saw them as interesting people and many of them were our good friends. My brother Jim was a full on hippie. He was born in 1950, so he was 18 in 1968. I was 8. My brother Bob was into the scene but because he married young, he was a bit more conservative. He was 20 in 1968. Jim had long hair, wore love beads, bell bottoms, and India gauze shirts. He did the drugs, listened to the music. Other people looked down on him. He got kicked out of places. However, the only time my father got angry with Jim was when he was sent to jail for possessing pot. Back then it was a jailable offense. When I started Jr High it was the height of desegregation busing. I had good friends of color. I also had girls of color slap me around. In college I had a summer job at Walt Disney World. We had just about every race, color, sexual orientation, and religion working there. I didn’t care about any of that - I made friends with all. In my corporate career, I often found myself being the only white person in a meeting. I didn’t even notice unless someone pointed it out to me. But, I have friends that had very difficult times. My heart hurts for them.

Hi Wayne! This is actually one of my favorite Zep tunes. Something about the melodic line, the mandolin…., it’s so folky and lovely. Of the “gentler” side of Zep, it’s this and The Rain Song fir me.

Zepp III came out in the early 70's when the 60's hippy music was dying down but Zepp loved that music. They love the influence of the 60's music. This was their contribution to that influential music of that time.

I missed this reaction when it was originally posted, but still want to comment. Your thoughts on this song brought back some fairly unpleasant memories from the time when this music was first released. The prejudice against young men with long hair was a real thing! I laugh about this now, 50+ years later, but my dad threatened to cut the hair of any long-haired guy that came around our house. He did not understand why a guy would want long hair! I got along with my parents pretty well, but this caused me to lead a *double life* for quite a while. I wanted to avoid an *incident*, and even had a boy I knew with short hair come pick me up and give me a ride to meet the guy with long hair I was actually dating. This went on until I moved away to attend college, where I paid rent on an apartment with a couple of girls, while basically living with the long-haired musician somewhere else. I only went to that apartment for the couple of hours, every six months or so, when my folks would come to visit. I never did tell my parents I hung out with those *hippies*, and for several years, I avoided returning home as much as possible. I still feel a little guilt over that period of my life, but did not want to cause my parents distress over what would not hurt them in any way, but would have worried them greatly.

Hallo Wayne, every day with you-r channel and Led Zepp is a good day ! thanks for sharing your experiences, the end 60s and whole 70s reminds me of my youth, always trouble with our conservative parents, "cut your hair, your "Monkeymusic" is to loud etc., but we never gave up, lived our own life, also never thinking of any colour of people, we was open minded for all and special Rock and Soul music helped us through the 70s. love & peace thats all you need....

I'm not always able to get to your reaction videos early, however I'm early enough that ya might actually read this. You really understand what my friends and myself went through in the mid to late 80's early 90's. While the rest of the Headbangers got into speed metal, we found REAL music. Keep enjoying Zep and try the Who, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Jethro Tull and The Guess Who. Absolutely amazing along with STEELY DAN...oh GOD..Steele Dan!! GOD BLESS!!!

In 69-70 I was in 1st grade, we had one black student in my class and I had him over for a sleepover. It took the rest of my fam by surprise, but they didn't tell me not to, even beat up the bully that picked on him and at that time Tampa was deep south. One thing I'm confident in, if we met we'd be friends, I can tell by what you've shared in your reactions. If ever in Tampa, drinks on me

Most young men back in the sixties, if they had long hair, ran into such things..,, not just famous people. Bob Seger speaks of it in his song Turn The Page. Certain places in the country could be dangerous for “long hairs” Ever watched the movie Easy Rider? Huge cultural divide back then, similar to today Long hair signaled you were part of the counter culture, and many people had a very low opinion of that cultural movement.

These things you talk about exists in any walk of life and I have experienced this myself but not about colour or race it was about being a rock fan as my parents assumed if I followed rock music I would end up on drugs which is far from the truth it’s people saying this things cause they are told this what’s happens if you do something that person just doesn’t like or think they don’t like it in my opinion or understand it

Rolling Stone took against LZ right from LZ1 in 1969. They realised they got it wrong as other albums came out but doubled down on their negativity. Over time theyve only grudingly given praise to LZ but I think they eventually apologised for their begrudging attitude over several decades.

I grew up and went to school in Oakland, CA. I am white. In Kindergarten there were only about 2 African Americans in my class. By the time I graduated the entire school was about 50% African American. Yet, the only racism was like you, from my Dad. He hated Blacks and Jews. But in elementary school many of my best friends were African American. It was not until I went to Jr. High School that because I was white at a mostly African/Latino school that I experienced racism to me! Well by the time I reached High School (Same one as Tom Hanks, who was two years older, and I knew who was but did not know him.) I was full of racism. BUT I still had Black friends, and I could not understand how I could hate! So I would classify them with the "N" word. Once we were at driving and one friend was mixed the other was Black and I used the word. Immediately, I was ashamed and told him, I did not mean him. To this day, that haunts me. Even so many years later I said sorry again, but that does not remove it. BTW, our music interests were in different areas, and we would make fun of each others, but other than the obvious one was mostly for whites and the other for blacks, it did not lead to racism for us. But I did see it happen to others. Sorry so long of a message, but it is your fault because your story brought these memories back to me! Best Wishes! Rock on!
