Listen, I really missed STB when he took a short sabbatical and I am genuinely ecstatic that he came back and is re-uploading these wonderful songs! The in-depth analysis that he’s so great at not only help him understand the music the way that we who have listened for fifty or more years ‘get it’. Gives me faith in the younger generation that they might just understand why we have been such die hard fans of not just Zeppelin but the other groups that changed our hearts minds and souls. Welcome back! In case you're interested: the "dual" you mention in the end is a typical blues way of writing and playing two phrases after each other, usually referred to as "call and response". You can find many blues artists doing this; one example would be:Sunny Boy Williamson responding to his own harmonica by singing the following phrase or the other way round. Thanks for doing great content! ❤️

4/20/2021 - Just listened to your reaction to this song that I've listened to many hundreds of times. I bought LZ One the summer of 1969 when I was seventeen. Now I'm 69 and over the years my affection for this version of YSM continues to grow. The Muddy Waters original is still a favorite of mine as he makes his guitar sing as well but obviously not like Paige. The Piano in the original is classic too. I was taken by your admiration of the LZ version and it made me smile (again)

Thanks again for another great analysis. I love this and I Can't Quit You from LZ1. LZ does alot of "call and response." Sometimes between Robert and Jimmy and sometimes between Jimmy and Bonzo. I love the call and response in this song. LZ only performed this live during their 1969 concerts primarily. Over time, I've tried to find filmed live performances of LZ songs. I've been unable to find one for this song. There is "promo cut" from the Beat Club in 3-1969 but this is a live performance with the studio cut over dubbed to the film. There is a live partial recording if you're interested from 8/31/69 at the Texas International Pop Festival. It is a mismash of You shook me, dazed and confused and how many more times. You Shook Me is on the video to 1:08 and then later from 1:58 to 3:00 - although there is audio out there of live performances, unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any other film at this point in time. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWnCnpqnhLJ9ecU

Atlantic Records had a twenty year history of recording and promoting black artists. Jerry Wexler of Atlantic actually coined the term Rhythm and Blues to replace “race music.” So when Atlantic was sold and delved into more profitable rock music they signed a band formed by a couple of well known London session musicians (Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones). LZs first album was recorded in short order, something like 20 hours studio time. The band had very little original material, even recycling “Dazed And Confused” and “Black Mountain Side” (White Summer) from Page’s old band The Yardbirds. So they did an amazing mashup of blues standards to create 40 minutes for an LP. All these elements came together and produced genius, in my opinion LZs greatest album.

members of Led Zeppelin were known to be huge Willy Dixon fans, "you shook me" and "I can't quit you babe" are two songs on the first album written by Willy Dixon, Dixon's family were able to successfully sue Led Zeppelin for using his material without permission, even though on the album the songs clearly state written by Willy Dixon
@CliffinAZ
@CliffinAZ 4 жыл бұрын
1j007zm, I’m not 100% sure, but I believe that originally (I.e., on older pressings of the album), the credit wasn’t given. Maybe the writing credits were added after the lawsuit?
@1j007zm
@1j007zm 4 жыл бұрын
@@CliffinAZ I don't know because I still have my original Led Zeppelin 1 album I purchased in 1970 and it mentions Willy Dixon, but I think they got sued over a guitar riff because Robert Plant always used to say that it was really Jimmy's riff and not Willie's
@CliffinAZ
@CliffinAZ 4 жыл бұрын
1j007zm, if you have one from that far back then that would be what was originally there. You know, now that I’m reading up on this I see that Dixon’s lawsuits were based on the second album-the use of his music on Bring It On Home and some of his lyrics in Whole Lotta Love. But they were also sued by Jake Holmes (and settled with him) for Dazed and Confused, which he’d written as a folk song. Check the credits on that one: I believe they say it was written by Jimmy Page. The thing was: plenty of people knew Jake Holmes’ version at the time (and the Zeppelin version had actually started out as a Yardbirds cover, which probably was lyrically closer to the original).
@1j007zm
@1j007zm 4 жыл бұрын
@@CliffinAZ Yeah, I remember hearing an old blues song with almost identical lyrics, the song I heard said "whole lotta lovin" instead of "whole lotta love". I also remember the Yard birds version of "dazed and confused", Led Zep were also sued by Dixon for riffs from "When the levee breaks", recently they were able to successfully defend themselves against a band called spirit, for the opening riffs to "stairway to heaven", justices are starting to notice that many old music groups are having to much success suing rock stars for music that doesn't sound to much like theirs, hinting at that it might start getting harder to do so in the near future
@CliffinAZ
@CliffinAZ 4 жыл бұрын
1j007zm Yep, I read about the Spirit lawsuit. I’m glad Zep won that one. To me, Taurus just doesn’t sound anywhere close enough to Stairway to Heaven to merit a lawsuit-unlike, for example, Dazed and Confused, where the Zep version was clearly a new, expanded version of the original. Jake Holmes didn’t even want full credit for that one, just some share of royalties, rightly considering Zep to have made a substantial contribution that went beyond his original idea. Taurus was a very short piece, very unfinished in comparison to Stairway, and not even including any lyrics. It can also be argued that that initial riff that was similar between both songs originated with classical music, not with Taurus. The grounds of the lawsuit were also ludicrous, implying that a law that didn’t even exist when Taurus or Stairway was created should be retroactively applied to the lawsuit. That’s just crazy, because if Spirit has actually won, it would have set a lawsuit whereby anyone could be sued for having done something that was perfectly legal at the time, and then became illegal 20 or 30 years after the fact! But some lawyers will do anything to try to win their client money, no matter how wrong it is...
