I'm a huge Zeppelin fan and a huge Tolkien fan, so this song has always been a favorite of mine. Plant loved Tolkien and had used him as inspiration for lyrics in several Zeppelin songs. Great choice since this is not a well-known one of theirs to non-fans.

For this song, Jimmy plays mandolin (his first time with that instrument) while John Paul Jones plays acoustic guitar. Jimmy doubled his mandolin tracks and used an echo machine to help provide a wall of mandolin/guitar for this song. As others have said, singer Sandy Denny joined Robert on this. Sandy provides the "ground level" commentary while Robert seems to provide the "big picture" overview of some fantasy battle. When performed live, Jimmy would play the mandolin while John Paul Jones played a three-neck guitar with a mandolin on top, a 12-string guitar in the middle, and a 6-string guitar on the bottom. Jonesy would also sing Sandy's part in concert. Robert has always been interested in Lord Of The Rings, histories, various mythologies and folklores, especially Celtic/Welsh so, in addition to lyrics inspired by Lord Of The Rings (Ringwraiths), Scottish histories of Anglo-Scottish wars of the fifteenth and sixteenth certuries, he also mentions "Avalon" which comes from King Arthur legends. Avalon was supposed to be the source of all magick and comes from the Celtic word "abal" which means apple. Avalon was said to be a beautiful paradise island full of wild apple trees (the lyric "the apples of the valley hold the seeds of happiness"), grapevines, and wheat. I really appreciate your enthusiasm for Zep's music! i *strongly* suggest you start at the beginning of their catalogue and go in album/track order; it is nothing short of incredible.

This song is a duet by Robert Plant + Sandy Denny (singer from Fairport Convention at the time, as a special guest) which is part of Led Zeppelin's fourth album. Led Zeppelin's first 4 albums are masterpieces where Robert Plant is at the peak of his voice. In this song, guitarist Jimmy Page's work in the studio is brilliant, in the final section of the song he plays 6 instruments separately and mixes them together to result in this wonder for our ears. Sandy Denny, a masterful singer, died young, at just 31 years old, after falling into a coma following an accident in 1978 after falling down a staircase. She already suffered from depression and alcoholism and this was the last and final one in a series of accidents that she had in the final stages of her life. A great song to get to know Fairport Convention that showcases Sandy and the band's talent is "A sailor's life", a masterpiece folk rock jam suite with 11 minutes, from the album "Unhalfbricking". R.I.P., Sandy 🙏❤

O man! It's been a long time since I listened to this song. Instantally, I was teleported through time and space to my childhood-teenage room, Led Zeppelin on the stereo, while ensconced in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. Both were very popular around here back in the 70s. That my favourite band so obviously also loved my then favourite author was very cool. Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane.

No words can describe the magic of Led Zeppelin. This is the great Sandy Denny singing with Robert. She is the only other person aside from the 4 band members who was honored with her own glyph. You might want to check out some of her music, like the hauntingly beautiful "Who Knows Where The Time Goes". Im about to turn 68 and I often wonder the same thing. I was a mere 15 when this Zep album was released

I have been recommending this song performed live by the band Heart for years. The show was called “Heart - Alive in Seattle”. Anne plays acoustic guitar and sings Robert Plant’s part. Nancy plays the Mandolin and sings Sandy Denny’s part. It’s one of the best live covers I have ever seen. I’m subscribing in the hopes you check it out now that you’ve heard the original.

Now I would suggest going to something at the opposite end of their wide range; When The Levee Breaks. Outstanding, hypnotic, powerful blues rock. The range between this song and Levee is immense. If you want live, but also showing their range, then I would suggest Since I’ve Been Loving You, live from MSG ‘73. Gorgeous blues….and damn sexy too. 😁😘

I finally learned how to play the mandolin part of this song after decades of admiring it. I've never felt my guitar skill was up to the perceived task. As it turns out, it wasn't as hard as I've always thought. But, it did renew in me just recently, a love for the song. I'm glad others are getting a taste of the old magic. Robert Plant was a big fan of Tolkien and had a love of the Middle Ages and stories of trolls and fairies. Stairway to Heaven, which is on the same album, also has similar backgrounds. Plant says today that he could no longer write such abstract texts as he did when he was younger. One of the few Led Zeppelin pieces that doesn't feature a guitar. Page played it from start to finish on a mandolin.
