I have a Japanese pressing of physical graffiti bought in 1977 my Dad was director of trade for port of Tacoma and traveled to Japan every year for a few months I asked him to buy me physical graffiti because of the true vinyl pressing the sound quality was much better and it came with the song lyrics.

15:38 I was at the show in Austin in September of 1974, where 80,000 were there to see Jimmy come out for the encore with Bad Company. Until that point, most everyone had been sitting down on the field. But when Jimmy was announced, everyone stood up. It was only then that I realized that the three guys in front of me were each over 6 feet tall. I had to stand on my toes to try and get a glimpse of Jimmy. The inner record sleeve of ZZ Top's Fandango! album had a daytime aerial view photo of Memorial stadium filled with people. As for people claiming fake LZ shows, there used to be a rumor going around that LZ performed in Austin in the 70's. But that never happened. I met Roy Harper at the same record store in Austin where I had purchased Physical Graffiti. Roy was signing copies of his latest release When An Old Cricketer Leaves The Crease (known as HQ in the UK).

I met an aging hippie at a wedding reception in the '80s. We chatted about music, and he mentioned he'd seen Zeppelin in concert. This blew my Zeppelin-fan-obsessed mind, and I asked him what he remembered. He laughed and shook his head and said, "Oh Man, did we get high. We were absolutely out of our minds, man. Just blitzed." I rattled off more questions. Was it in '75? '77? Earlier? How were Plant's vocals, could he hit the high notes? Did "Dazed and Confused" go on for an hour? Were there green lasers? Did they crank out a medley of '50s tunes during "Whole Lotta Love"? To every question the hippie had the same answer. "Oh, man, did we ever get high. We were absolutely out of our minds, man." I realized the guy didn't remember anything about the music or the performance. I believed he really did see Zeppelin, but the dude was just too high.

As crazy as this sounds, I can definitely relate to the guys story. In 1973, I went to see Genesis in Detroit for their Selling England By the Pound tour. Peter Gabriel at that time was in full storytelling and costume mode. And Suppers Ready had by then become the bands' Tour de force epic of their live shows. Unfortunately, the only thing I remember from that night was looking for and finding our seats. Everything else is a total blank. I don't know what I took before the show, but I've deeply regretted it ever since.

I could buy that. We've all heard the saying from Woodstock-attendees, "If you can remember Woodstock, then you weren't there!" I wondered about the truthfulness of those statements, until the Summer of 1995, when my brother & myself and our girlfriends saw VAN HALEN on the "Balance"-Tour, in Bonner Springs, KS. Now, I'd been to concerts before that, but because I was out of the Navy by that time (2 years prior), I had no quams about taking a toke or five off the "jointers" (as Ozzy called them at his shows in the 1980s) that were being passed around for free. I was so blitzed that I barely remember Mike Anthony's bass guitar solo, Sammy Hagar's accoustic blues-influenced showpiece, Alex Van Halen's drum solo (only because he was wearing a neckbrace for the entire show), and Eddie's 12 or 15 minute guitar solo. Don't remember much of what they played, but know they did play for about 2 hours. They were stoked over the size of the crowd, as the venue is an outdoor venue (of which 5 years later would see Iron Maiden play at the same venue, Sandstone Ampitheater/Bonner Springs, KS), and there were at least 70,000 of U.S. there, Sammy said 90,000 over the microphone at one point. And now that I think of it, when Sammy said he was "Having a drink with 90,000 of his closest friends" over the mic, I 'did' look over my left shoulder, and up the hill, to see a SEA of 'VAN HALEN-ites' stretching to the horizon, as the summer sun was waning into sunset! So Sammy probably had the number of attendees correct. Hell, he was in a better position to know than I was anyway! They probably get a ticket-sales count before they go on, and they were selling tickets at the gate also, @ $40.00 a pop! A band I'd never heard of opened for them, 'Our Lady Peace.' And I never heard of them after that, either. Point being, the old 'Zep-Head' you were picking the brain of was most likely telling the truth.

@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories I will, it's like living through it again. We didn't have cellphones or pagers... I remember sleeping outside at Memorial Music against a brick wall on a cold and rainy night to buy tickets for the 1977 show. I am holding half of the embossed ticket stub, it cost $8.85 and was at The Summit. It doesn't have the date, but it was on a Monday and Jerry Weintraub was the Promoter back in the day. The brick wall is still there, but it's a Dry Cleaner now, 47 years ago... I just discovered that there is a video of the entire show!

My radar always goes up when someone says they saw zep in `74 or `76. One of those years we all know they did not tour. Saw your live stream last night. Your playing is really good. I like the Beck influence in there too. Next to Jimmy and gang, Jeff is also a super-hero of mine. The notes I posted on live stream was the intro notes to Hots on to Nowhere. Its a weird grouping of notes they just sound cool. Of course, kind of awkard to play too till you get the hang of it. one `note` I wrote is two notes, double stop. F on D string 3rd fret with the A on the G string at 2nd fret. I sort of stumbled on that riff jamming.

I’m 67 and was lucky enough to have seen the band eight times in Chicago from ‘73-‘77…. I can tell you the exact dates of the shows, and the nights the shows fell on…. We got some great second row main floor photos of the Easter Sunday Page Stormtrooper show. In ‘75 we got to see them do stuff off of Physical Graffiti over a month before it was released here in the states, it was just an awesome time to be alive. I can remember some specific moments clearly, but a lot of those shows are hazy, dim memories. I’m sure being in an altered state for every one of them was part of that, but it’s been over 50 years since the first show in ‘73, so I can understand how some people can’t remember what others would have killed to have been there for. What we did to get into and see all those shows was to grab up as many tickets as possible, then we would sell, buy, or trade up to the best seats out of the bunch. In ‘73, one of the guys went down to Ticketron at Sears with a couple of big boys as security and bought 40 tickets, but that was back in the days of no limits. Great times man, back when giants walked the earth!

I’m glad I found your channel. I’ll be subbing for sure. I consider myself luckier than smart lol, because it was a much different time and we had the freedom to do stuff like that. The friend I had who made that Ticketron run didn’t make a dime on the tickets, he basically had money from everyone we hung out with, and grabbed the tickets. He bought both nights, July 6th and July 7th of ‘73. I didn’t see the Friday night show, my ticket was for the Saturday night show. It was roughly two weeks before the TSRTS filming in New York at MSG, and at the tail end of the tour. Plant struggled a bit with his vocals, because by that time at the end of the tour he had some serious issues, but the band was spectacular, and they had incredible charisma, an aura, and the energy in the old Chicago Stadium was electric all night. The crowd had lowered the fire escapes and people were pouring up them by the hundreds and into the building. People were sitting on the stairs and in the aisles, and they were breaking the lights located under the balconies to make it darker in the building. You couldn’t even walk in there, I’m sure it was way beyond building capacity, the Chicago Fire Department would have had fits. The air was like a fog of pot, cigarettes, and fireworks smoke. Since it was so close to the Fourth of July, the place was full of fireworks all night, and several times Plant pleaded with the crowd to stop, and there were some pretty good fights on the main floor. I remember the chaos well, I was sixteen and had never seen so much energy in one place lol…. That was when some of us decided that we’d never miss another Zeppelin show when they were in town again. They did three nights in January of ‘75, and four nights in April of ‘77. Again, it was a different world, just great times.

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories i think what makes your videos so special and downright necessary is that within the history of any band, theres always going to be a place in which your own love for them can influence how you share their history, good or bad. when i watch your vids, you are kind of bringing us into that place within your mind that this most amazing of amazing bands resides, maybe resides within us all, because who exists can say they havent been touched by zep even if they only heard em once. its the kind of thing you hear once and it changes you. to say otherwise indicates a lack of soul, ahaha. your vids have the quality of sharing your perspective of how they inspired you growing up, theres something to be said about passing that positivity on beyond the history and sharing about your life and how it was a little bit of a struggle to find the zep catalog. all the time and effort you put into it, know that those of us who might be struggling, youre bringing such positivity to our lives as well sharing their story in the way you do that words dont do justice.

Episode 4 is quite a challenge right now, trying to sum an entire tour is hard, but as i will do 1975 concert retrospectives in the future i don't stress too much. I need to get a PG USA pressing...yeah i agree, most of them are not in good condition. I know people listened to these A LOT. I own a German Pressing but the windows are weird...i sometimes think its counterfeit, the record store's owner where i got it is a shady man. Thank you very much for watching!

Jose, my favorite part on this is when you said the outtakes totaled 27:68. now, i question everything you say! LOL. nah, this series is coming close to your ITTOD one. which, i think we all agree, is by far the best zeppelin documentary of all time. i think i know a guy who will beat the high bar you set, though. he goes by the mysterious moniker JCM and he's nowhere close to his peak. haha! watch out for this guy. he's in your rearview mirror and objects are closer than they appear. that'll be your future self, my dude. i'd reckon you're around your zep III level arc of your documentary career. if that. you know, it's determined and talented folks like you that continue to provide us hope. that respect and admiration and UNDERSTANDING of that which we are passionate about from the past can be uncovered and appreciated; rock archeology perhaps. it not only keeps it alive for us old timers...it actually refreshes, enhances, and clarifies it. and i am sure new folks are getting the vibe too. as it connects them to time a timeless time of magic. you, sir, are an alchemist. led to gold. and it's icing on the cake that you play fantastic guitar! from crisp classically jazzy stuff to classic 77 page slithering. i'm grateful for all you do for the community. that' why i set up the modest patreon as it's the least i can do. keep up the amazing work!! JCM thanks again! Again about the surgery for Plants vocal. He sounded good on the songs on the album, but on tour we can hear it more, listen for example the Rain Song in 1973 compare to the 1975 versions in the middle part. But there is even more change in his vocal after 1977. On In through the outdoor and also at the Knebworth concert in 1979 his voice has changed again. Do you know if something happened, what caused this change?

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Thanks for your answer! That would be great a special around the changes of his voice! Yes in 1977 he was good again, his singing on Presence was great too. But on ITTOD I think it is much less than before on the rocksongs. On All my love he was great. The knebworth concert his voice was also not a good as it was. I saw LZ in 1980 live, that wasn t good either. Yes in his solo career much sounded good because he adjust what he can sing. On the page plant tour his voice was again not als good as it was. But it was a great tour, I saw them in 1995. I prefer his voice in 1973 on TSRTS, for me he was at his best, although not all the tour, I ve got a lot of bootlegs of that tour! Great we have TSRTS!

JCM, As far as 74’ double albums you forgot Genesis Great The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. The first I read of Plants vocal surgery was when Stephen Davis mentioned it early in his excellent 2010 book on Zep’s 75’ tour. When I read that the unevenness of his vocals on PG made sense. His vocals on his first solo album are by far his BEST post surgery in my humble opinion.

His early instrumental albums from 1962, 63, 64 are outstanding and fun to learn. Chicken Pickin' , Wham , Sa Ba Hoola , Memphis , On the Move etc are some of the best examples of early electric guitar soloing. Also, the Moody Blues formed Threshold Records 1970-71. IIRC "On the Threshold of a Dream" was the first album released on the Threshold label. You have a great channel. I try to recreate some Pages live sounds. I am bit confused over the echoplex. Did he always had it on, on the slapback setting or when he was soloing? I red somewhere that when came to the solo he was activating the second amp to a more gainy setting, like a boost? I can see that he is manipulating the guitar knobs all the time. My les paul doesn't respond to all that, of course my les paul is not an original or a posh Gibson one. Maybe you should do a tutorial on guitar playing, on the sounds. I saw some videos of Jimmy Sakurai but I don't understand Japanese, but I digged some Marshall settings from a photo of his Facebook that seem to work. Gracias !!

I'm not convinced The Stones were paying homage to Zeppelin by using that building stoop. Richards actively dislikes Zeppelin. Not the people, but the band. It's a point that has always surprised me as they all swim in the same DNA pool. Maybe it was the competition they brought.

But remember Richards and Page were still friends by 1980. Keith played Knebworth 1979 and they had similar lifestyle choices in 1974 :) So maybe...jusy maybe. Thanks for watching Steven!

Keith Richards, like the media press in general, thought LZ was a crass teen oriented lab product. "I always felt there was something a little hollow about it", he said. Now, follow the money. By 1971, the LZ entourage saw themselves both as an unstoppable success and as the biggest band in the world. But they were in the same record company who claimed that the RS were the “Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World”. Few people outside the record business knew that LZ was outselling the RS by 3 to 1. In 1972, both bands toured US at the same time. The LZ tour resulted both a great artistic and financial success, and a big failure, as they were totally ignored by the media and the celebrities. The Stones tour was advertised by their Los Angeles PR firm as the youth cultural event of the year. Still, LZ actually outdrawed them in some cities, but no one seemed to get noticed at all, thus no one would ever know... So they hired B. P. Fallon as a press agent as a first mitigation. Later on, came Danny Goldberg, a 22yo publicist who ironically had written reviews for Rolling Stone, one of LZ biggest critics. Solters, from Solters, Roskin and Sabinson, one of the best and expensive PR companies in US, had told LZ: “Your music is taking a backseat to a lot of negative publicity about your offstage life, and that offstage image will require some rehabilitation (...) You’ve shied away from most interviews for so long, all the press has to go on are the rumors about your maniacal behavior. We’ve got to (...) change that outlaw image. We also have to let the population at large know that you’re accomplished musicians, not savages.”

1:26 ... that's certainly more reasonable than the 52 copies of ITTOD lol. I had the chance to see LZ on one of their 6 nights at the L.A. Forum in '77 at age 12 as my Uncle (RIP) had an extra ticket because my Aunt thought they were too heavy but my Mom said no. I was not happy about not being able to go and still haven't forgotten..

That 1987 Barry Diament PG CD was terrible sounding. A travesty. Kevin Ayers is pronounced the same as in Heirs (to a family fortune). Nico is pronounced the same as Knee-co (as in co-writer, co-producer) At 23:00 the 7 outtakes running time are 27 mins and 68 secs. Ha ha. Is that just to see if we're paying attention? 1973: Humble Pie 'Eat It' was not entirely studio as it was partly recorded live at Green's Playhouse in Glasgow, Scotland. 1974: Genesis 'The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway' double album released November 74 is missing from the list.

I hope you don't get defensive when I ask this but by having so many copies aren't you preventing others from attaining a copy? You mention affordability for your channel but you purchase the same exact thing? Sorry, I'm just a working-class fan who never understands this middle-class phenomena but can't ask them face-to-face so I ask you. Spread the music dude! Donate a record to a school or club or something.
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories 7 ай бұрын
No need to get defensive at all. This is a very good question. Let's first talk about how "others" have dissed this album and ignored its value, thus why i find so many copies at record fairs. I'm also working class, what is the middle class anyway? I would donate to a school or club but guess what....less and less people care about the music were i live. Also, collecting is a personal hobbie, not hurting anybody :) Thank you very much for watching! Stay tuned for series finale Episode 4!
