I thought it was a medifore for life.
I need the Zeppelin fans help on this..
But this was that unique Zeppelin sound and once again we get Robert Plants ab-libs, that's always one of the best parts.

A levee is a mound of dirt to keep a river from overflowing its banks. Think of Hurricane Katrina. This song was written and first recorded by Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie in 1929. The lyrics reflect experiences during the upheaval caused by the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. A lot of folks lost everything and had to migrate north to Chicago to find work. Led Zeppelin reworked it and took it up a few notches.

It’s alway funny to hear people that have no clue what a levee is. I grew up and still live in south Louisiana, so I know all too well about floods and having to rebuild your home. You have to experience it to truly understand this song.

Hey bro this is old Mississippi delta blues! A levee is a small dam that holds the water back this song is about a true story about way back when there was a big rain storm which caused the levee to break! It caused a devastating flood! It Killed a lot of people and the flood took many home's!

Love that swampy dirty feel of this song. Noble that is Robert on the harmonica that starts out at the beginning of the song and through out. At the end they reverse the tape so the harmonica is playing backwards.

Definitely worth checking out the original 1929 version on KZbin just to see what Led Zep started with! Famously the drums were setup and recorded in the entrance hallway of an English country house with some basic echo effects etc. Even John Bonham was happy with the sound!

A levee is a temporary dam made of earthen material. When the Levee Breaks means the water has breached the wall of the dam. No deeper meaning here. The song is done in a southern Delta Blues Style. So the meaning is literal. The land is below sea level (I'll have no place to stay) and the levees break when there is torrential rain.

It's funny you mention that the beat sounds like a rap beat, and that it should be sampled. This drum line is one of the most sampled of all time. Keep up the videos!

Lol. It’s a newer song to you maybe. It’s from 1971 and that beat is legendary. Yes this beat influenced hip hop quite a bit. Rappers have remixed it many times. Zeppelin are the masters of the double entendres, amongst other things. This is about a levee breaking and when that water comes rushing in there’s nothing you can do but move. Of course you could apply that to life too. This is a remake of a Memphis Minnie song from 1927 about an actual levee breaking in Mississippi and killing hundreds and displacing thousands. “Go to Chicago.”

I'm amazed when Americans don't know what a levee is. It's a sort of earth bank designed to prevent flooding in low lying areas. The last time the levees failed was not so long ago (2005) when New Orleans was flooded by Hurricane Katrina and that was all over the world news, but this song is about an earlier flood. It could stand for any failure of levees though. Perhaps you were a child at the time.

no metaphor with this song. it is literally about a levee about to break because of too much rain. It's an old blues tune. That was some of the stupidest commentary i've ever heard in a reaction video. At least have the decency to pause the video if you have something to say. (by the way... nothing about a train)
