What made John The Greatest Rock Drummer ever? Great time and respect for space was one thing. And for another, he had a tremendous understanding of integrating the entire kit into his playing. Some drummers were more top kit hand oriented players only; but John had developed his foot to mimic rhythms he played with his hands as well. That 'Bottom' was very important to the Zeppelin sound. And his jack rabbit speed could accomplish some intricate doubles and triplets that filled space to make him sound bombastic! I caught him live in June, 1977 at MSG in NY and feel very honored that I did.

You are watching him do what is called the lightning fast left-hand lead triplets from hi-tom to low tom and the bass drum (left, right, kick). Many you guys think he’s doing the insane speed of crossover triplets on 14:06 with the right hand, however many drumming specialists say it’s a left hand lead lick so if you slow down the video, u can see he’s doing it with the less dominant hand. But literally that’s unbelievably class for Bonzo, yep I agree no doubt that any other professional drummer could match that talent of this Zeppelin drummer. He’s definitely my No.1 drummer on top of my G.O.A.T drummer list.

@@thecorknicehero3073 thanks for the comment of a drum specialist view. I want to talk about why almost all real talented drummers are dying young. Many so called super drummers are still alive, so my question is, are they really so good? In an educational point of view Bonham,Moon, Yoyoka, Paulina, Sina, or other still alive drummers probably are the most difficult child’s or were child’s to handle. They live in another dimension and their heart working overtime. Four limbs coordination we poor and normal folks call it multitasking. As in every proffesion practicing is the key, and the best guitarists drummers, piano players, singers, even football players talents showing in their younger age. Everybody can learn and become an Engineer or Arhitect, but becoming a Messi or in this case Bonham needs extraordinary talent, which most the time overlooked by the parents from different reasons. And my take of all todays talented young and coming up artists have a huge help from the internet, so no wonder that so many brilliant kids can learn without paying huge sums for education, but sorry, Bonhams or Einsteins are not born in every century which is the reason that after a half century,no one even tries to touch Mobi Dick! Four geniuses as it happened in the case of LZ or the Beatles only happens if they have a difficult childhood or poor environment to growing up which can be the driving force to have a better life. Best example, a Bedouin kid in the Saharan desert in fact did find an empty oilcan and fabricated a guitar from it and become the greatest left handed guitarist in our time. His name is Mdou Moctar, and if you friend want to your jaw dropping to the floor, look him up on KZbin. Thanks for your exceptional comment about drumming!

The sheer raw and crazed frenetic energy with which Bonzo approached the drums is absolutely astounding. It was less boxing-match and more street-brawl, if you follow my meaning. It’s not just that he played the instrument differently than anyone else-it’s more like he wasn’t playing an instrument at all. John Bonham was a “drummer” in the same sense as someone applying paint to a canvas by dropping a hand grenade in a box of spray cans is a “painter.” It just doesn’t describe what he did. It was his medium, but what he did with it was-and is, to this day-truly, genuinely, profoundly unique.

@@paulrobinson5833 - It's also drum enthusiasts hearing and valuing different things. Of the early 70's greats I would rank them, Carl Palmer, Ian Paice, and then Bonham, but I tend to favor equally involving the entire kit. Palmer and Peart are more truly symphonic in that way, and the latter was far more creative with a wider expanse of sounds and rhythms from around the world and across time. That's why Peart sounds superior to me, but I most value that "drum symphony" approach and skill set.
