I feel most people can identify with this song. There is someone that got away because time wasn't right or life got on the way. Sometimes feeling this poignant pain let's us know our heart is still alive and beating. Memories keep us aware that there is that one person, on the world, that we are still connected with. Memories don't always need to cause pain. They can give joy, remembrance and happiness.
