Excellent sewing projects. Well done. Not too shabby on the subscriber count either. Since you have access to a sewing machine, here's a project for you. Over a nine year period, I sailed my 34' kauri wood boat from New Zealand to San Diego. One of the most useful things on my boat was a bean bag made of sunbrella fabric. Cylindrical in shape with dimensions of 20" X 40". There was a 18" zipper for access to the "beans". The zipper pull tab was hand stitched closed for obvious reasons. It made for sitting in the cockpit (when it's dry), and down below more comfortable than anything else I ever tried. But where "Candy" (of course she got a name) really shined was sleeping with her. When the boat is heeled over, having Candy between you and the low side is heaven.
@nearlynormal
@nearlynormal 4 жыл бұрын
Forgot to mention that that if the cylinder was standing upright. the beans would only come about 1/4 to 1/3 up from the bottom. Never had a problem stowing it either. Just throw it anywhere and it'd shape shift to fit without moving.

Hey Sam. I had a Cape Dory 28 for 8 years on Lake Erie and sailed most all the Great Lakes in the US. I can tell you three things I learned very quickly about the Cape Dory. 1. The Boat is a great sea boat in rough weather. Lake Erie gets very rough and very choppy. I would go out when no others ventured. Number two when backing out of a dock the Cape dory will not turn into the wind. Let the wind blow the nose whatever direction she goes, gain speed and turn into the wind when you are going fast enough to spin. That adventure cost my insurance company a little bit. 3. When sailing on a broad reach or anything behind a beam reach, lower the main and use the Genoa only. You eliminate heel and rolling from the main and get just as much speed sailing the Genoa without the main and it’s extremely easy to gibe. . I recommend the largest Genoa you can get because it’s more power down wind and as you know it’s easy to roll and reef. . You’re gonna love that boat. I would take it anywhere. I had a gennaker in a sock and used it all the time.

Sweet Lee Cloths! One things my family has always done for boats of this size, is to make boards (plywood? with rails?) that cover the distance between the two bunks (horizontally). Then the backing cushions (or custom cut cushions) go over those boards to transform the entire cabin into one very large bed, filling the whole cabin.

Lee cloths are a must have. When the girlfriend and I were cruising I used to just throw the bunk pad on the floor between the bunks and sleep there. However the GF refused to sleep on the floor and sure enough she got thrown out of the bunk into the opposite hard side of the opposing bunk. She had a black eye and severely bruised face and jaw. And of course we were days away from port. Could have been much worse. So then we rigged up some lee cloths. It gets rough out there!
@samholmessailing
@samholmessailing 4 жыл бұрын
Ouch. I've definitely resorted to sleeping on the floor before I had lee cloths. Not too bad if you can keep it dry. also puts you more at the center of rotation in a rough anchorage.

Sam, My Bro talked me into using “Sunbrella” fabric to re-cover my cockpit cushions on my Seidelmann S299 (dated but fun & super fast) It worked out Very Well...So well that I purchased more to re-cover all other cushions below deck. They’re Not the Most Comfortable fabrics for Berths, but nicer cushion mattress pads make the difference! Plus, Sailing all Day leads me to heightened alcohol intake while on the hook, so I sleep well, regardless. I just wanted to throw this idea out there because it worked out so well with me. That style fabric is ridiculously durable and weathers like no other in salty climates. I’m in no way affiliated with Sunbrella...I’m just a Dude with a Buddy that gets ideas & believes that he’s a GD Genius, when I put them into motion. Stay Safe & May the Winds be Fair to You, Hombre.
@samholmessailing
@samholmessailing 4 жыл бұрын
Sunbrella Is great stuff. My interior cushions are sunbrella. The exterior ones are vinyl. Definitely need a good waterproof fabric like Sunbrella for the cushions even if they're inside. I learned that the hard way on Swedish fish(massive mildew problems). I've been thinking about converting one of my berths to a mesh pipe berth though. I think that would be Wonderfull for ocean passages when you're constantly coming in and out and getting soaking wet each time. you could just leave your wet clothes on and lay right down.

I think your cockpit organizers would be good places for the winch handles. We had plastic winch handle cases by the companion way and with a much deeper cockpit, we had cubbies/ shelves behind the seats under the winches where we would temporarily store winch handles so they could be grabbed when needed. We NEVER left them in the winches to prevent from losing them overboard.

@johngalt5887
@johngalt5887 4 жыл бұрын
Sam Holmes Sailing Hi Sam, haven't tried it yet. It looks like a gear mechanism close to the gooseneck that requires a key (which I don't have). Not sure the gears run and boom rolls freely. Plus the cars look like they need to come out of the track as the sail rolls up, only to be re-inserted one by one when removing the reef. The boom vang is a funny looking u-shaped thing with rollers. Slab reeling is coming. Sorry got long winded. Keep the vids coming, we have been at our vac home in Port Charlotte Fl, and everytime we look out at the harbor, we talk about you and your vlogs!

How are your Lee cloths held in place? I personally would have fastened then on the top with grommets like you did but the bottom I would have had a wider strip of mesh thaf you fold under the mattress. Then when you are lying on the mattress, it is held in place by your body weight. Grab handles would help to climb in and out of bed. Your mesh pockets are a brilliant idea, to keep winch handles, fortches act close to hand.
