Okay! I'm here to explain, since no one has yet.. This song was written by Jonghyun, from SHINee, RIP to him. They were very close, he was one of her role models and it's a song that talks about the hardships of life. It's not only about breathing, is about depression, and now we understand that even more since what has happened (He committed su*cide a few years ago). The chorus says that sometimes she can't understand somebody's sigh, but even then it's okay and she will hug them anyway. Because they need it. Because we all need that support at a certain point. The fact that it comes from Jonghyun, we fans know how much songs like these meant for him, and she did too. She tried to sign it at his memorial and she just couldn't finish the song, because she knew. In fact she never couldn't sing the song again in a very long time, until I think last year. She went through her own depression too and she has talked about it, and recently came out with Holo which you should watch tbh. It also talks about depression, but also about how it gets better and how su*cide is not the way. She basically goes back to her younger self in the video letting her know it gets better. But back to breathe, it's a song that's meant to be comforting, and I 100% believe Jonghyun wrote this from a very deep place, he basically described how he wanted to be comforted, and again those are just my believes according to everything that was revealed after his death, not stating it as facts, but he also has a live performance of this song and he was such an interpreter that you can see all over his face how much the song meant to him... So yeah, it's basically that. RIP to our lovely Dino ♡

It's unfortunate that we've lost such a talented idol but your memory lives in all of us. Every time I listen to this song, I cry. From the first time I heard it when it was released and even now. I remember how Lee Hi cried in the middle of singing this song after you passed. It must've been hard knowing why or how you wrote this song. I can't imagine having to lose a friend so suddenly only to realise the whys. Depression is very real. I've lost a couple of friends from depression in the last 2 years & never knew why. i know you've read the comments and know about Jonghyun, the writer of this song but one very important thing i'd like to add is this: You hear the very last line of the song is "You did a good job". that line is so extremly powerful and heartbreaking because in Jonghyun's goodbye letter, which he wrote to his sister before he died, he wrote at the end: "It's been to hard. Please tell me i did well. this is my last goodbye." It really puts into perspective how much these lyrics came from his heart. He just wanted to be heard.

(It’s long but I hope you could take some time and read it ) This is the story about her song ‘Breathe’ (basically the history background of the song so you can understand it more) (she guested on the show jyp party and she talked about this story in the show) Lee Hi wanted to sing a song basically about breathing because back then she finds it hard to breathe because she also suffered from light panic disorders and somehow it kind of trapped her and ate her up inside so she had trouble breathing. she wasn't aware of her condition yet she just thought that- that day she felt like having trouble breathing, she even tried to use a plastic bag but it didn't help so she went to the doctor a day after that. That's when she decided to sing a song about breathing and she wanted to comfort other people who are having a hard time from stress and suffering just like her. When she was asked by the Host "What troubled you the most, back then looking back now because you haven't said anything about it, what is it?" She said that It was hard not to be able to do everything she wanted to, she wants to sing, to sing for her fans who love her and supports her but she realized that it wasn't always like that, it wasn't easy. Right after Kpop star ended (the tv show competition she was in) she immediately signed into an agency which is the YG ent. she said her boss adored her so her album was soon released but she knows to herself that it was not yet the best and she still had a lot to work on it but she didn't realize that it would take too long. Lee Hi became a recording artist without becoming a trainee so she lacked in certain aspects and had to learn and work on it, she hated that she wasn't good enough. but her first album was a success and that made her work harder.

Lee Hi have this friend Tablo from Epik High who was in same label YG Ent. the one who introduced the song to her. The song is composed by Jonghyun from Shinee and Jonghyun gifted this song to Lee Hi to comfort her personally and that's how it happened. Actually the artist who wrote and composed this song for her committed suicide on December 18, 2017. This song was released on March 9, 2016. "Breathe" clearly shows the terrible mental state he was in; it was like his cry for help but I think no one could help him back then… One of the most heartbreaking events in Kpop history. His name was Kim Jonghyun. He was a talented solo artist, record producer, lyricist, and the main vocalist of Shinee, one of the biggest kpop bands to have existed. This background story makes the song even more devastating for many fans and the death of Jonghyun has heavily impacted Lee hi herself and her mental health. The worst thing about this song is that it ended having an opposite effect of what it is actually intended for. It was supposed to be giving relief to those who feel burdened and to tell them to just breathe and everything is going to be okay. But the writer itself Jonghyun couldn't save himself, he wrote this song to give comfort to others but somehow no one could save him, and that's why this song hurts so much. imagine how much pain he is in while writing this song :cry: after what happened, Lee Hi had a very hard time performing this song without crying before but now she can and I guess that's a good thing.

I remember choking here and there, forgetting to breath sounds something anormal and i use to think it too yet.. I realized years after how much damage i was enduring, it was too much and even breathing became something i had to force myself into, it required so much strength to even breath ... that was the amount of pain I was facing, without knowing what it was.. just gasping for air at the end of the say.... This song is about comforting people with all kinds of problems, no matter what their status, their job, their problem, everyone has the right to sigh. 한숨 (Han-soom) is literally means Sigh instead of Breath (숨), but the title took 'Breath' as the English title because it focuses on how important 'taking a breath' is. SHINee Jonghyun (may he RIP) wrote this song to comfort people who he thought needs comfort just like him, but he couldn't comfort himself in the end. The depth of Jonghyun's lyrics hurts because I feel like these are the exact words he wanted to hear from the people around him but didn't so he wrote it for himself and for everyone fighting the lonely battle of depression & anxiety. This was brilliantly written because it doesn't even come from a place of "i know how you're feeling" (you can't really explain how you feel when you are in that dark place), but just the fact of seeing that person struggling and letting that person know that you're there,,, a hug... An excellent video to see her singing live is her singing "Rose" on the show "Begin Again". Her performance of her song "Holo" with the piano player Yiruma is another really good video to check out. Every song on her Seoulite album is fantastic. It has everything from the gritty "Fxxk Wit Us" to the melancholy "Up All Night" and "Passing By". Then there are the bangers "Video" and "World Tour". In another album " 24°C " She has an awesome song called "No Way". Just last week she put out an OST song (for an animation production) called "That One Word". Her duet with Henry Lau in a burger joint (Henry x Lee Hi : "Like I'm Gonna Lose You") is another fun video to watch.

She said on an interview that she suffers from anciety she couldn't breathe so someone told her about this song but that the author was from another agency, she and her team reached out to him and they arrange to get this song. I think this song was the first and last collaboration of YG and SM artist, Jong hyun had chosen the best vocalist that suited his song, Lee Hi successfully let us felt the emotion/feelings that Jong hyun might wanted to speak about, but unfortunately can't, our poor boy, I remember Lee hi performing this song at SMA, everyone was so emotional specially her, she almost didn't finish the song. I can't find it now. But, IIRC, there was an interview with Tablo and Lee hi around the time the Seoulite album (which Breathe is a part of) came out. And Tablo jokingly indicated that they didn't tell the boss of YG that the song was written by an SM artist until after he had already said he liked the song. So they kind of got it half approved and then told him it was a song by Jonghyun. Interestingly, one of the first things Lee Hi did after leaving YG was to collaborate with Chanyeol, another SM artist, as a featured singer on his song "I'm Yours".

Yeahhh there are different people in this MV to represent different status like lower class, middle class, and upper class. Everybody is struggling or in a difficult situation. At the end of the day, we truly don’t know what’s going on in each other’s lives. The brightest/happiest/put together person could be in so much pain in the inside and not showing it. The people who seem grumpy or stressed out can be the nicest people and just openly shows they have a bad day. This is why I try my very best not to judge people by their appearance or attitudes cuz I don’t know they and what they’re going through in their lives. Just like in the song and what you also said in this video...take a break from your day and just BREATHE... life can get difficult and things might not be going the way you wanted. Be grateful that there’s a tomorrow to wake up to cuz honestly people really do take things for granted..the simple things too. When this song first came out, I was excited because it was a SM (RIP SHINee’s Jonghyun) x YG ( Lee Hi) collaboration. Thanks to Tablo (EPIK HIGH) who at that time was the CEO of YG’s sub-label HIGHGRND (they closed that sub-label after Tablo decided to step down as CEO and EPIK HIGH left YG not too long after that). YG CEO appointed Tablo to Lee Hi’s comeback in 2016 and honestly Tablo really did such a better job than YG. The funniest story was when YG CEO heard the song, he loved it and asked who produced/composed the song...thinking it was Tablo or yg producers. Tablo said it was SHINee’s Jonghyun who composed and produced the song and it shocked YG CEO. LOL...but he still approved the song cuz it’s a great song. But yes Jonghyun’s message to everybody was felt and understood...it really did give you a WARM HUG. Lee Hi sang it passionately and genuinely cuz she relates to this song. Honestly, Lee Hi is one of my favorite female vocalist in the Korean music industry... she has so much range and genres that you haven’t heard yet. So yes pls react to more Lee Hi. She’s finally spreading her wings nowadays since she signed with AOMG, which I feel is the perfect fit with her. If you enjoyed the visuals on this MV you have to check out the official Holo vid which is not only stunning from a visual perspective but really tells completes the story of the song in a way that the lyrics alone only hint at. Also for a tearjerker check out Lee Hi's rendition of this song at the Golden Disc Awards show shortly after Jonghuyn's death, so brave of her to go out there knowing it was going to be impossible to get through the song without choking up. That performance summed up what I love about her, at her core she is vulnerable but fierce and that's impossible to fake.

You should really listen to some of Jonghyun's of SHINee's music. What gifted Artist and heartbreaking loss for us. I cried deeply after his passing. I'd recommend Songs like Diphylieia Gray, End of Day. I'm Sorry, Moon, Fireplace, Suit up. Just to name a few. Jonghyun wrote this beautiful song.
