The song “Breathe” is written by Jonghyun from Shinee💕 So it’s very meaningful and it makes me cry every time I listen to it because the lyrics are what he wanted to hear from others. She also talked about how it’s even harder to sing the song again after what happened🥲 She’s now under AOMG (Jay Park’s company).

The Red Lipstick video cameos are her AOMG label mates: Jay Park, Loco, Gray, Simon Dominic, Code Kunst, and mma fighter Korean Zombie. And yes, Monica and Lip J choreographed the song and appeared in the video. They actually performed with her on some music shows. 🥰

She was so young (16yrs old) and brand new to the industry for her debut 1,2,3,4. She hardly had any training, she just signed with YG right after the kpop star singing competition (she was runner up) and debuted in a year, it’s crazy. She definitely felt uncomfortable and awkward but she still swept charts and considered a monster rookie. As you can see she’s matured a lot since then!

The 2016 MVs you enjoyed (Breathe, Hold My Hand, My Star) are all from her second full album Seoulite which YG passed off to Tablo of Epik High to produce (at the time he was heading a subsidiary label under YG called Highgrnd). This whole album is no-skip solid gold. As is her newest album 4ONLY. Her discography doesn’t disappoint!!

Regarding her MULTIPLE 3yr breaks in YG, yg fans will say “yg is a perfectionist that’s why it took too long, there’s a schedule, Lee Hi wanted more rest/training” but that’s all pretty well known bs for her longtime fans. She was consistently blocked by YG from collaborating with artists who requested to work with her from different agencies, blocked from participating in OSTs, and even full albums with filmed MVs were cancelled. THIS is why she didn’t re-sign the contract with YG when it expired in 2019. Yes they gave her a solid start and big agency exposure for her debut but they really dropped the ball for the rest of her 7yrs with them. So far she has released more in less than 1.5yrs with AOMG than her entire 7yr career at YG.

YG is kind of fckd up🤧 first, 1 2 3 4 was supposed to be minzy's debut (which she never got under yg) and then HOTEL CHATEAU ADORE. it was such a bummer when i learned of this complete lee hi album that was scratched out last minute and never released tf.

Agreed. When she went out of yg she since 2020 she has actively released music no less than 9-10 songs every year, this year she had an ost (since 2020 she has at least one ost per year) and on her 5th collab, all in different genres. During her inactive years in yg she would be in 2 or 3 collabs in each year, no album, no single.

Ok, so now that I've finished the video, I can answer some of the question you left unanswered. About B.I. He indeed left IKON because of the drug scandal. I think he got like 3 years of jail, but was able to change it for community service and a fine, if I remember correctly. Lee Hi and him have a very beautiful friendship, she was in the middle of NO ONE's promotion when the scandal began, and was unable to promote along him, but she succeded in not taking his parts of the song for the live performances. They've got a few other songs together, all of them are amazing. About the featuring in Red Lipstick, it's Yoon Mirae, a legend for female rappers (specially underground rappers). She's considered to be one of the Best in South Korea. She is also very involved in social issues as stopping child abuse (along with her husband, Tiger JK) and raising awareness of the multiculturalism in korean families (as she faced discrimination when she was younger for being mixed). As for the last feature, I don't know them, but I like them! What a voice!

When you asked what's up with the 3 year breaks, I laughed. That was yg being yg 🙃 they wanted to keep her mysterious and I think it was hard for them to release her sound when it's not the yg sound. That's why most of her title songs were jazzy and soulful with yg.

Part of it too was I think YG really didn't know what to do with her. YG didn't know what to do with AKMU either, but Chairman Yang seemed to trust Chanhyuk enough as a composer and producer to let him just do his thing and greenlight their releases, but it seems he didn't trust Lee Hi in that same way or she wasn't able to self-compose and produce, which meant she had to wait until YG got around to her and they seldom did as most of their in-house composers and producers were more pop and hip-hop which weren't necessarily her style. At least she seems to be having some success at AOMG.

Keep in mind that Lee Hi debuted really young with no actual training. Whereas most idols spend years perfecting their dance and performance skills, Lee Hi was thrust into the industry head on. She had to learn as she went. Also, she was famous (on KPOPSTAR) for being awkward and quirky. She aged like really fine wine. She only gets better. Tho her new stuff haven't really caught my interest, Lee Hi's voice is always captivating.

The reason she looked uncomfortable in her debut and earlier videos was because she was only 16 years old! She didn’t have much training and despite having an incredibly soulful vocals with tons of potential and talent. Her stage presence/facial expressions was still lacking at that time. The girl has personality and actually can dance, but she wasn’t super confident at that time compared to her label mates. I also contribute that to just her growing up and becoming her own person/artist. Lee Hi has been with YGE from 2012 to 2019 and “No One” was her last song before her decision to not resign with YG. Also, the reason why she was more like HERSELF in 2016 with “Breathe”, “Hold My Hand”, and “My Star” was because the former CEO at that time asked EPIK HIGH’s Tablo who was the CEO of YG’s sub label HIGHGRND to handle Lee HI’s comeback. Tablo is all about authenticity and artist growth, so Lee Hi really got to learn so much from him and the kind of music/vibe she wanted to do for the SEOULITE album. Those 3 year gaps really gave Lee Hi anxiety because she would see her other label mates or her other fellow idol friends releasing so much music. However this isn’t new with YGE artists…they are known go on long hiatus for the sake of creating quality music. Which for some groups/artists in YGE can be true, but it’s most how crappy YGE management is with scheduling/planning for their artists comebacks or debuts. They still haven’t learned that much since then..which is such a shame. 😆

the glow up in the first 3 year gap was a few things: growing up (16 to 19), getting a producer who really believed in her (Tablo), and finding ways to deal with her severe anxiety. She was on a talk show and they asked about the 3 year gap and she explained her problems with anxiety, as someone who enter a reality show never expecting to go far. Then she gets 2nd and is signed to a major label! Debuts less then a year after that! Glad she was so honest about that.

what actually changed was the sort of "handler" of her album production. the seoulite album was prepared almost like under highgrnd label, produced by tablo, lee hi, and dj tukutz. tablo and tukutz are 2/3 of epik high. yg really didn't know what to do with lee hi that time so they passed her to highgrnd under tablo. highgrnd was an independent label when it comes to management and creative choices but a subsidiary of yg (yg owned shares of highgrnd).

Breathe. Because she debuted so quick (yg's wish) she took a break to practice more. The break was extremely long tho and she really struggled because of it. To the point of getting a panic disorder. Most upsetting is that this happened several times.
