So Robotnik and Eggman are the same character. He was always named Eggman in the original Japanese releases but for some odd reason they changed it to Robotnik in the English release. In recent years the English versions of the games made it so Eggman is a nickname Sonic uses to make fun of him and Robotnik adapted. He’s full name now is Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik

didn't know the whole robotnik eggman name thing wasn't as well known, when they synchronized the american and japanese interpretations of all the sonic media at the end of the 90s officially the character's name is Dr Ivo Robotnik but sonic nicknamed him eggman and it kinda stuck sooooo Dr Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik

the very first comic in DisneyAdventures had a opening comic in volume 2 in the 1991 volume there is a comic on how sonic turned blue thanks to a DR. KIntobor, a kind scientist that found Sonic he was brown til one day sonic on kintobors treadmill burned up his shoes broke the soundbarrier then turned blue Dr. called that the cobalt effect and the dr. then gave Sonic his shoes, then one day a huge device with containment ringss had 7 green emeralds in it dr said it is absorbing all chaos energy in the worls, then that fateful moment he spilled the soda on the console and the device exploded dr. grabbed an emerald and he turned big round with red suit on and pure rage sonic ran saying yikes the dr became a hardboiled gruesome, the comic ends as sonic told the tale of how Robotnik came to be once known as kintobor, then robotnik/eggman cause of his round body n shape im looking for that issue of Disney Adventures it i volume 1 magazine 11, 3 page game tie in true origin story.i still have it is faded cause over reading the magazine, but look for that one Mr. Cummings and Mr. Majdoub and the huge amazing comic series after that from Archie comics.

Eggman is just a nickname for Robotnik. Its from a japanese manga short I believe. I'd have to doublecheck. But essentially it just stuck.
