I was lucky enough to see Lee in the late 70's early 80's when he would come over and often win a european tour event. His control was breathtaking. I saw him hit 32 consecutive greens in regulation in one event. At another he shot 69 in the final round with 36 putts and came second!!!!! All greens hit and all three par fives in two. At that same event he hit three iron on a long par three with the pin on the left edge and a big downward bank on that side. He sent the ball at the left side of the bank and as soon as he hit it he said "that's perfect". Sure enough the ball faded in, landed on the left side and spun to about four foot.

I use to hit balls with Mr. Trevino in Palm Desert at the citrus course. He moved his hands along his foot line on the backswing… Not out away from the body. He told me why he set his hands bowed at the top… it was because that’s what they should look like at impact… I thought there was another reason too. I believe he could control the ball from going left along his foot line… he would aim sometime 40 to 50 yards left.. with feet never upper torso. Tail bone was always controlled

This is a swing that Lee figured out himself.He had a strong grip but realised the relationship between the back of his left hand and club face was crucial to the trajectory of his shots.He needed a technique that got his lower half out of the way so he could hold that club face off and he worked it out on the range over many hours... a genius and one of my favourite golfers along with Seve.

Yeah i agree Vince !! What a talent to get himself there ...one of my favourites as well ...such a awesome impact with great moves ...maybe the best iron player ever !! And one of the hardest working golfers of all time !

Dave Pelz, a short game "guru", came up with what he called a "percent error index". A 100yard shot that missed the pin 10 yards left or ten yards right had a 10 percent error.Of all the pros he kept stats on Lee had the lowest percent error index of around 5 percent. The next closest was in the 8 percent range. In professional golf that is a HUGE difference! Lee was especially deadly with his wedges and his mouth :)

I was enamored with the Trevino swing when I was younger. Tried to emulate his every move but eventually gave it up, thinking I just wasn't built for that swing. Every now and then, on the range, I have to try it again. A fun way to hit a golf ball, although maybe not the most powerful way.

I don't know - compare his wrist angles and body action to the longest players in todays game - lots of similarities - way ahead of his time.

Good point NY golfer and Pelz also stated if he had been better with the putter the Nicklaus story might have been a lot different. However, my experience has been Trevino and Hogan's swing moves tend to make the putting stroke feel very spotty at times. Whatever you enjoy best in golf is always a good choice. (If you get the Trevino move under control the ball will feel like a marshmallow so a blade like the MP-33 is nice).

Am I correct in thinking that Trevino’s feet, hips and shoulders are almost 45 degrees open from the target at address and this causes the swing to be very unique. If I am correct, and he’s one of the greatest ball strikers ever, why not treat his swing in the same regard as Hogan’s?
@CraigHansonGolf
@CraigHansonGolf 2 жыл бұрын
It was a very open stance that’s for sure. I think Trevino’s Swing maybe looked unusual and not so pretty to the naked eye that’s definitely one reason people didn’t want to copy it

Trevino's swing IS held in the same regard as Hogan's, at least by his peers. It's just that the open set-up is not traditional, so is not taught (unless you implement Trevino's teaching from his book).

As of fan of Trevino I only have one regret. If they only had him mic'd up for every shot he made on tour and at the range. Imagine how sweet those sounds are to the ears would be.

So keeping that right heel down low to the ground helps a lot to give conscious control over the swing -- seen this time and again. But there are exceptions, lots of them, guys that get that right heel way off the ground, and up on the right toe -- Tiger when he was younger.

You mentioned you have gone back to a Trevino style swing so you have tried it before ... Do you try and swing like other golfers sometimes ? How do you hit it with your own natural swing ?

All good golf shots are the same in the impact zone. Get the left arm and club straight through impact.. focus on the last 6 inches before impact.. get it straight and follow through after you hit the ball.

Is it any surprise how good LT was…..absolutely not. Fantastic foot / leg work. Fantastic plane. Remain parallel to the original shaft plane well into the follow through. Great video!

How much of the ability to put the shaft back on the original shaft plane is just down to lowering his body through the swing? My shaft is about 5 degrees above the original shaft plane but in hardly lower (if at all). Also though, the inability to realign the shaft planes can be due to early extension. Note how Travino’s hips active deeper and more left than at address (the opposite of early extension). Early extension causes you to stand up which increases the shaft angle making it pretty much impossible to get the shaft back on plane.

Lee straightened his right leg in the back swing which is what pros tell you not to do .

The ONLY way you can use this type of swing method is if you have a really good lower body action.You have to make a STRONG first move with the left knee in the transition which sets the hands back down onto plane. if you dont you will pull hook the crap out of the ball. With Trevino that is what happens. His first transition move is GREAT. But then everybody would benefit from that factor....Moe Norman called it the "Magic Move" and HE was the best ball striker who ever lived!!

Hey Steve, it’s probably not something to try for club golfers. I’ve done some videos in it. It’s probably to hard to write about it to try and explain it You’ll see info on it in my videos or on WorldClassGolf.Com

@@CraigHansonGolf i imagine the move is something they're doing as a reaction to their swing action, an effect.

Tell me what you mean about hes hitting it with his right shoulder? thanks for posting

Ok, this is just based on my personal feel and observing many of the best ball strikers. When I am striking the ball as good as I can I have the feeling of hitting the ball with my right shoulder, with that exact thought, back swing through down swing. Hips, arms and shoulders seem to respond correctly to that aggressive rotation with a swing-path that is" in to in". The steeper I feel mu shoulders the better my iron play is. I feel no need to "fire the Hips"( witch gets my disconnected). Other things might be happening at the same time but with very little conscious effort. I play from a fairly bent over position and swing as some might say "flat" Note that I´m not an instructor or pro, just my 2 cents
