I played in both games and Leeds were a very tough team to play against and both games were pleasure to play in which I will never forget.Leeds were a top team with players who were skilful as well as having players who were tough. We had the same brilliant players in OssieHollins Cooke Hudson but also we had defenders who were tough and who could dish it out "Blue Is The Colour" John Dempsey.

Wow the actual John Dempsey(Chelsea).. you played in both games. and you are here telling us. I am a Leeds fan, I remember this game big time....i was so devastated when leeds lost as a young kid. In fact we lost the lot - European Cup, League Championship and FA Cup.... But Leeds United could play....boy could they play...To be fair ...Chelsea had some wonderful attacking players as well in Hudson, Cooke OSGOOD and Hutchinson.....

Thanks John. Its so good to get a reply from you. A person that actually played in those times/era. People always state that Leeds were "Dirty" but what they don't seem to take in, is that - The whole way football was played then was like that overall. For instance - Liverpool had enforcers such as:Tommy Smith and Ron Yeates, Manchester United had Nobby Stiles a(and much later on (Roy Keane), Arsenal had Peter Storey, Manchester City has Tony Book, Ipswich Town had Allan Hunter and Chelsea has Ron "Chopper" Harris and so on and so on.... And yet Leeds united were the one that are labelled Dirty. They were not as dirty as all the others mentioned above ......Leeds were a product of the times ... If they had VAR then, then half of those players mentioned wouldn't be playing for long.. But Leeds could play....from from to back and from side to side. The only Person that I would replace in that Leeds side would be Jack Charlton. I would have replaced him earlier with PAUL MADELEY AT CENTRE BACK....

carl brown Yes you are probably right that if those players were playing today they would not last long on the field.Football has changed greatly some good like better playing surfaces and some bad like you can't tackle like we did all those years ago.I believe that then you played because you loved the game and not about money because we never got much and when you finished you had to find a job not like today. Leeds were a great team then with a lot of skill all over the team and will always be for years to come remembered as a top team.

I was eight years old and brought up in an Everton family, but I wanted Chelsea to win so much (the cup final, many of you will remember was MASSIVE in those days) that I supported them for a few years, before starting to go to Goodison on my own in '75. I retained a great affection for Chelsea though, right up until Abramovich came in and Peter Osgood remains to this day, my favourite ever player. There was a sports shop in Liverpool that had a big poster of Ossie at the top of the escalator and my Mum hounded them until they let her take it and she gave it me that Christmas (71, I think.) I was made up and had it on my wall for years! I was gutted when the great man passed away and was actually with my Mum when the news came on the tv and her eyes followed me as I left the room in tears. I never got to meet my hero, but had planned to find his pub, near Southampton. Alas I was too late. There were some great players on both sides and in particular for Leeds, in these two games, Terry Cooper shone out as a superb footballer. Mum bought me a replica of Chelsea's cup winning shirt (the Wembley version) and I still wore it even when the sleeves were torn and frayed! One thing about the coverage in the replay though: does anyone else think the singing is canned, except just before the first half ends? Was 'Here we go' around in those days? Anyway, thanks for taking me so far back to recall great memories, by posting this. Paul Newton, Bootle.

Two absolutely epic ties. I was nearly nine and an avid Chelsea fan, my memories of the matches are a bit sketchy but I'll never forget the joy of the replay. It's the first time I've seen it in colour - we only had black & white telly! The tackles were hard but nobody rolled around on the ground unless seriously hurt, the matches flowed much better for it. That's how we played at school. Like the pro's we played on some terrible pitches - energy sapping mud baths! Best years of my life.

As a Gooner I have to admit this was an epic of its era. No diving to get players sent off, no over analysing. Just 100% blood, thunder and skill. How come the caption says BBC tv replay (Old Trafford) even though this has to be an ITV broadcast as Brian Moore commentated and I remember the original BBC broadcast lost sound just before Mick Jones scored?

Such an honour to see comments by the real John Dempsey, Chelsea legend. I was a little kid watching you play on TV- too young to go to games. The FA Cup and the Cup Winners cup were so important for us. Gave us bragging rights on the playground with all those Utd and particularly Arsenal fans in North London. It was a great time to be a football fan with great players. I wonder if you ever thought of writing a book? I just read Charlie Cooke's biography. Saw this game and the replay on TV at the time. I can't remember why the Wembley pitch was in such a poor position that day. It was generally slightly more draining pitch to play on than a normal league pitch apparently [except Chelsea's which was a swamp after each winter], but there was usually plenty of bounce in it [note opening almost no-bounce goal]. Here, they have spread sand everywhere, and underneath the sand the grass was in really bad condition. Perhaps someone still knows? Of course, pitches back then were never quite the billiard tables they are today. Even clubs in the top division.

Watching the mighty leeds teams of the mid sixties to mid seventies.... as a young lad, pulling on the all white kit made my eyes water with pride. Clarke..... one nil.

A memorable moment regardless of which team we supported, though more so for Leeds fans of course. The FA Cup meant more in those days. Chelsea were missing Hudson, Leeds Reaney but the 1970 final teams roll off the tongue.

Just to clarify , this was the Wembley game. The pitch was a mud pit as they held a horse competition a week earlier . The replay was held three weeks later because of leeds match fixtures, at old Trafford .

The first match was at Wembley, where he was poor, but he was better in the replay at Old Trafford, and so scored in every round of the cup. The replay was a very dirty match, yes, and Osgood was involved in a set-to with Charlton who should have been sent off.

Yes, certainly by today's standards. The 2nd game was worse. Eddie McCreadie did a flying kick to Bremner's head in the Chelsea penalty area and the ref allowed play on, when of course it should have been a penalty and red card. Players had to cope with more dirty fouls in those days and just got on with it. Now, players dive at the least little touch or no touch at all.

It was a great game at wembley. I have never saw the wembley pitch as bad as that before for a FA cup final, its always like a carpet. But the game at old trafford wasnt as good. Its great to see hard players playing good football on muddy parks again. You can see how much the old pass back rule has changed it now. But if it had been changed long before this the games would be brilliant to watch all the time!

Leeds looked exhausted at Wembley. Each season they were involved in too many competitions which is probably why they were runners-up so often. In 1974 Revie told his team to go just for the league which they won easily.

Got to agree with you there, as soon as I clicked on this link and looked at the pitch I thought, wtf is that? Maybe it was a bad winter followed by a really wet spring, there has to be some reason. Then again in Scotland you get worse conditions but would not produce a pitch like that so it's still a poor showing by the FA.
