The Leek Moth is a ruthless destroyer. It will annihilate your Garlic, Leeks, onions and chives. Nothing can Kill them, why. Because they live and burrow their way into the plant stocks and eat their way to the bulb at the roots. Everything dies and rots to nothing!

Thank you Kat, I'm sure glad all turned out well. I figured a loss is a loss so there was nothing to lose, so I tried something and it turned out good. I do think my wife will have to find a new place to enjoy her coffee. LOL Have yourself a great week.

@@danielcharbonneau222 I have a hibiscus plant that I’ve been growing for about 7 years. Last winter a hard frost hit. My coverings didn’t work so well. It definitely suffered from the frost. It lost most of its leaves and I thought it was a goner. Then all of a sudden it came back to life! Oh yeah! Then a couple of month ago, it started dropping its leaves again. Oh no! I saw a whitish stuff all over it. People were telling me it’s a fungus, it’s mites, use this and that. Well I didn’t do anything! Then about 3 weeks ago I saw new growth after several heavy rain storms. So I took a high pressure hose and washed off all the remaining white stuff. I saw my first blossom about 5 days ago! Oh yeah!

@@Dominic.Minischetti That is so cool! It's a good thing you let Mother Nature do her thing, now look. Sometimes I do get anxious when something is or looks wrong and I want to fix it, but it's not always the case that something is wrong, like your plant. I think a lot of people out there give bad advice on a situation that they have no real experience with. In your case, new growth and blossoms already.

The bugs in the garden have been terrible this year. Not sure why, maybe late in planting or the terrible wet and humid weather. So many things eaten away. Slugs and snails have been a problem too, but those I can take care of. Hoping for at least a few good string beans and some tomatoes. Take care and have a great week. Bruce and Otis

Well Bruce and Otis, you got that right. Our weather did not help the gardens at all this year. I was going over our pictures from last year and comparing it to this years, what a difference, everything is struggling this year it seems. Hopefully August and September bring us good temps with moderate rain to aid in our gardens growth. Till next time happy gardening my friend.

Sad news to hear Colette. I have two videos out showing the leak moth devastation on my Garlic, than I have a video showing my final harvest, looked good! BUT. when it was time to peel the cloves for dehydrating I loss another %60 of the cloves almost everything was infested with the larva as well. I also lost all my onions and chives as well. I was very disappointed to say the lease. I didn't plant any chives, onions or garlic this year, I may not plant them for the next 5 years now. Colette cut your loss bag everything and bring it to your local dump, you'll thank me later!

I hear you. I trashed everything that was wet / slimy to the touch. I also took apart about 7 questionable bulbs to have a look. The larvae are about 3/8" long and easy to see. As far as micro organisms, well I'm sure I've eaten worse. LOL When everything is dried out in about three week, I'll have a closer look.

Thank you for posting this, Daniel. A friend up visiting us in NW Maine just alerted me of a leek moth infestation in my once beautiful garlic bed. Ugh! I have grown gorgeous garlic for years and have never had this problem where I lived in Vermont (new to Maine 3 years ago). I will also mention I found very little on leek moth in the myriad of gardening books I have here, so I think it's a relatively new pest. I even learned online where it was first discovered in the state of Maine in remote wilderness location where I live! So now I am headed outside to do as you suggest. A few questions for you: What about spraying w BT after the stalks are cut down? What about covering the whole bed with row cover after I cut them down? And finally, what about next year's seed garlic? Do I need to buy certified and expensive! seed garlic? I see others commenting about what a buggy year it is; I concur! Even my nettle patch was being decimated with back caterpillars! BT and diatomacious earth took care of that, but that's another story for another time. Thanks again and I look forward to a response when you get a chance.

Heather cut your loss bag everything and bring it to your local dump, you'll thank me later! Savers BTK doesn't work what so ever. This parasite lives inside the stock and bulb of the plant therefore spraying the outside of the plant has no effect on the larva feeding / life cycle within the safety of the plant. Savers BTK only works on parasites that feed on the outer parts of a plant {leaves, flower etc.} like mites, ants and caterpillars as an example.

@@danielcharbonneau222 Thanks for your response, Daniel. -so frustrating to say the least. To clarify, bottom line- are you suggesting I pull all the garlic out now along with all other alliums ( I have shallots, chives, leeks and regular onions) and haul it to the dump? I was thinking I could slice the immature garlic cloves and dry them to make dehydrated garlic.

@@heatherhardt2783 This video is under 7 minutes kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4PIfnSgaJh1pM0 I thought that I did OK with 22 pounds, but, when it was time to peel, freeze and or dehydrate them I lost another 12 pounds to the larva. We inspected each clove and each one that had a small black pin hole in them had a larva in them. Some bulbs had two or three cloves in them that were completely gone except for the peel. I lost all my chives, Leeks and onions, a great loss. They were not even growing in the same garden bed, but, growing about 35 feet away in another bed. I do think that it is to late for you to worry about the situation. The damage is done. Don't get frustrated, it happens. Give it a go, pick and dry them when it's time. Once you are ready to process them {dehydrate / turn to powder} you'll see then how much you've lost or not. I sure hope that you do not loose as much that I have lost. For me it was educational and it will be for you as well. Please let me know how things turn out for you.
