This video and commentary about leeks is the most informative and comprehensive by far I’ve watched. 👏👍🤩 Been wanting to know what happens if leeks bolt (was hoping NEVER as I’d planned on harvesting the green shoots forever 😂) and learnt so much from you!🙏 Quick question, should I keep harvesting the green shoots so as to prevent them from bolting lol?? Just wondering! 😄

Thank you for your comment! If you would like to get seeds from your plants then sacrifice a couple leeks by leaving them alone and let them go to flower and then collect the seeds. Or if you buy seedlings each year from a green house then go ahead and keep harvesting!!

Great info.! My leeks‘s variety is a bit odd than you showed us. It will split into more than 6-10 tiny bulbs, which put a bunden on me. Either separate them all to get bigger stalks, or leave it alone to get crowded and small stalks. I'd rather it splits into 3 decent sized bulbs. 😂

Thank you, this was a very informative video! How long does it take for a leek to grow to from seed to ready to harvest? I can never tell when they are ready to pick (mine are the giant variety).

I picked up some seedlings late last spring, they are now bolting. I believe they could have been harvested in the fall or possibly even earlier in the spring.
@thyme2grow676
@thyme2grow676 2 жыл бұрын
Oh, I like the giant variety! Most leeks are 100-120 days, some 150, especially if they are larger and/ or in colder climates. Plant in the spring (or start inside early to harvest sooner and transplant), and harvest when 2-3 cm thick (or about 1-1.5 inches). If you plant seedlings in the fall, they should be ready just before summer heat sets in! That’s when they like to bolt. You will want to mound dirt around the base to increase the edible quality of the leek (the white part). Good luck!

When do you split and replant the bolted bulbs? fall or leave until spring?
@thyme2grow676
@thyme2grow676 3 жыл бұрын
After it blooms and goes to seed it will die off, but underground the bulb is making the splits. Depending on your location, you may see signs of new leeks sprouting by late fall, or early spring. That’s when you can dig up and separate the leeks. Usually 3-4 new leeks. They should have a good enough root system at that point to survive being separated. Good luck!

I cut my store bought leek two or three times after rooting it in water, it kept growing so I used its leaves for food After the 3rd cutting, it stopped growing. I thought it grew but it was only the middle, I looked at it today and it appears to be a stalk that will flower. There’s no nub yet but a white area that looks like a deflated balloon, idk if I want leeks in the garden... I live in a zone 8b I think, how do I keep the seeds viable ?

Good for you regrowing you’re veggies! Great use of waste! That’s a pretty hardy plant if you have been harvesting it’s foliage and it still had enough energy stores to bolt. If you get your beautiful purple flower, let it go to seed and dry up - which will be late summer/ early fall. It will become dry so harvest it before the wind shakes the seeds out of the pods or you will end up with little leeks sprouting all over the place LOL. I usually use a bucket, using one hand bend the seed pods over the bucket, then snip it off so everything falls in. Shake/ rub the old flower head and you will have your seeds! Leave your plants roots as they may split and form new leek bulbs. You will know by next spring if multiple leeks are coming from where your one leek was. Enjoy your leeks and thanks for watching!

My leeks were planted last year but didn't get to size. This year they bolted. If I cut them off will they produce new edible leeks? Or if I wait for bulbs can I plant them and get edible leeks?
@thyme2grow676
@thyme2grow676 2 жыл бұрын
This has happened to me before, sneaky bolting! Leeks from the previous year tend to bolt in late spring early summer. If you catch them before they bolt they are fine, once they bolt, even if you cut the flower off, that woody stem is still in the middle and there is less edible parts. I would recommend you leave it and then once the leek dies off you will see at the end of summer / early fall new leeks coming up. To get the best size possible I would separate them so that they have their own space to grow and try to harvest them next year!

Hi, can you please help me with this, the same way bolting happens in Carrot and can I use the seeds from bolted carrot and use them? Willl be really grateful for your reply. Thanks
@thyme2grow676

Hello Yogesh! Absolutely you can use those seeds from your bolted carrots to replant! Just like leeks carrots are biennial and once they bolt in their second year they are usually inedible. But the seeds from the bolted carrot are very useful! I had a patch of carrot in my garden and some bolted. The next spring I had all kinds of baby carrots that reseeded on their own! Enjoy!
