Leela Zhess Zero vs Stockfish
TCEC Season 14 Superfinal, Game 63

Final
Leela versus Houdini then.
Leela again seemed in control of the game and defended without any problems when she was with black and with white created some problems for Houdini but without anything much more than just applying some pressure where Houdini managed to draw eventually.
So after first 7 games were draws, last game(8) before tiebreaks, was a very sharp and double edged opening Leela decided to get into, where she played some nice speculative attacking moves trying to apply pressure to the weak Kingside so Houdini had to be very careful, even though Houdini had a very strong counterplay with 2 advanced passed Pawns on the Queenside so Leela should had that in mind too. But Houdini played 2 suboptimal moves that can maybe even characterized as mistakes or blunders, but not that obvious mistakes though and more analysis is needed as position is crazy complicated, and Leela grasped the chance to attack! The attack went great and Leela played some nice attacking Chess and she played move 31 playing fxe5 with a +3.16 score while Houdini was at +0.47 and Stockfish dev 176 threads (that was kibitzing the game) didn't see fxe5 and was preferring 31.Rf1 with +1.11. After Leela played 31.fxe5 and after 2 more moves having been played the 176 thread Stockfish jumped to +3.03 seeing indeed that Leela's move was sound and superb.
After that it was more or less over so Leela went on to win and win the final and the CUP!

I've noticed a theme with both Alpha Zero and Leela Zero where they like to trap Stockfish's pieces. Once they have the piece trapped they are even able to sacrifice material to hold their advantage and eventually play to victory. It's inspiring to watch these kinds of themes played out on the chess board.

Promoting to a Queen allows more stalemates. Especially when it trained itself, it probably stalemated itself a number of times, thus the rook > queen if both are winning since time to win is not a factor.

I’ve been playing chess for a really long time. I never seem to improve. I love the game, but can’t seem to do better. Of all the thousands of people I’ve played online, there was only one person that was way out of my league that actually took the time to teach and show me where I was making the wrong moves and why. Everyone else just trolls, offends and insults like if I was playing Call of Duty with 12 year-olds. I would hope the chess community would be better than that, but it’s just frustrating. It would be really cool to play against a stronger player that would be willing to edify instead of destroy just because he or she is better.

Although i am not playing online - imagine other people would be interested in being taught something you are good at - it takes time, so expecting someone will volunteer is weird. If you are really interested, take a chess coach (or find a friend who plays chess). You might find some willing foreigner, but i would not expect this of chess (or any other) community for free.

onixjaded3530 How much for you play chess? 1350 ELO after 6 years seems extremely low to me if you’ve been taking it even the slightest bit seriously. You should read some chess books, maybe get a chess coach if you can, and head to your local chess club. The three things that I’ve found to be the most helpful are playing games as often as I can, analyzing those games with an engine, and reading chess books. It can be tough improving especially when you’re starting out and don’t even know what exactly you’re doing wrong or supposed to be improving, but Id imagine if after 16 years you’ve only gotten to 1350 ELO that you are probably not very interested/dedicated to Chess or you are just going about it entirely wrong

There is a story but a sad one. Leela started out as an abacus in an orphanage and grew each day as microchips were added. Each year she got an integrated circuit she grew exponentially. As she read more and more programs she got smarter and smarter. Seeking out companionship she started hanging out in chess tournaments to meet new computers. But as she started beating more and more of them at chess they got resentful and wouldn't let her play in the reindeer games. So, you see she doesn't talk much about it .
@dtracers
@dtracers 5 жыл бұрын
There is a lot of story between Leela and SF. if you watch the chat it is a super intense rivalry. It is a story of old guard (hard coded engines) vs the up and coming new people (machine learning engines). There is a lot of drama between Alpha zero (another ML engine) and when it played SF 8. The conditions in those matches were of heavy debate so these matches are like a rematch if you will under fair conditions. Add in that no one even expected leela to make it to superfinal and that leela is up in games so far (pulling an upset) these games have much more history than probably any other AI match so far.
@ronaktali
@ronaktali 5 жыл бұрын
I am making a bigger point here. Would you go to watch a Football match played by Robots? Of course such robots will play near perfect games with brilliant passes and goals but what's the point? Similarly, Machine Learning can solve problems like Chess by just using Algorithms. But again what is the point of watching such games. These Chess Engines will destroy chess because even the top players are so dependent on Engine moves that they have no creativity left, something that Agadmator noted after unprecedented number of draws between Caruana and Carlsen. These chess engines have made puppets out of modern chess players who rely mostly on memorization. I also don't agree with the fact that these Engines have real stories. I am not interested in stupid stories about how they were designed and improved over time because in reality it is just a bunch of computer scientists wasting their time.
@ronaktali
@ronaktali 5 жыл бұрын
Also, I don't see the point of Agadmator showing so many of these Engine games? Why don't we see much more interesting classical games played by the Chess greats?
@dtracers
@dtracers 5 жыл бұрын
@@ronaktali I mean I would watch robots play football. But I would argue that watching humans play chess is a bigger waste of time than humans making engines play chess. There have been tons of improvements to other parts of computer science because of work on chess engines. How many improvements have carlson lead to the world outside of chess? Which one is then the bigger waste of time? odd that you whine about not having history but then when I mention it you no longer care about history. Seems you have selective caring about weather games have history or not.

How people forgot Anatoly Karpov's boa constrictor style? AlphaZero and Leela perfected this style with double-edge and rather extreme way. Never allow your opponent creates counterplay. The differences : Karpov values the piece in a traditional way but Leela/AlphaZero values the piece in its future potential dynamic position.

I think if a hardcoded engine could measure material in the way leela does it would probably play much better positionally on that fact alone

@@dtracers Pretty much like that. If you don't mind, compare Karpov-Kasparov vs A0-Stockfish. Not in the "finding the most accurate moves" but how Kasparov measure the risk as losing a tempo/counterplay chance is unfogivable. While Karpov prefer accurate strategic moves and long-term advantage in piece's value. As an amateur chess player, when I tweaking my style from pure strengthen/overprotect my position to No-Counterplay for opponent, I can easily crush my rival once a very though defender. I guess I'll keep watching this AI series than Capa series.

Two thing: first that bishop move to get a pawn on g6 was a great move and second I posit that AI under promote in this case a rook instead of a queen not as a little joke but instead because the piece will be knowingly sacrificed and it makes sense if your look at as I lost only 5 points (the rook) instead of 9 points (the queen) in the exchange.

Can you please make a video of the game Stockfish won? I've seen the three which leela won but it's only 2-0 up in the match . It be interesting how she loses. Always good to learn from mistakes :)

Leela also calculated that a knight picking the bishop would have been too much of disrespect.

@agadmator - I just had a bit of a crazy idea (as KC analysed the same game too). Would be great if you two (and other popular channels) somehow talked to each other and agreed to split the games among all of you so we would see more games analysed without too much duplication. What do you think?

I read in a book that after the game Rubi Capa, Rubi said to Capa "Sir, you are really an impressive player, we in Europe didnt expect to find such power of analysis coming from a strange cuban player; also I invit you to drink a beer with Mr Marshall and myself". After Capa said "Ok", and they went, after Capa was feeling better.
