The lack of NVME makes perfect sense: it's pretty obvious they want to release one with it down the road, but as its supposed to be an easy kid's computer first and foremost, having to open it up and mess around with NVME isn't in the design goals for the primary market. Having a prefitted NVME would increase the cost over prebuilt SD cards. I'll wait for the probable A500+ (which I'm pretty certain will be the name, cos retro) and I'll probably be disappointed that it will probably only come with an NVME drive prefitted, and I'm going to want to put in an AI card, so I still probably won't buy. (And then I suddenly remember that the officially supported one is the Hailo card, which doesn't even use NVME, so the A500 is already obsolete.)

On the Pi400 it's all the way on the left side, which means right-handed people have to run the (short) mouse cord all the way across the Pi400. It doesn't leave a lot of room for movement. By moving it to the right side, they've given us a lot more freedom in the mouse cord.

@terrydaktyllus1320Ай бұрын
"The 400 was my biggest piece of buyer's remorse. I got it home to find no av port and 2 mini hdmi ports (I bought it for crt gaming)." I don't wish to be rude but if you'd have done proper research up front, then surely you'd have known that before you purchased it. "I tried some of the attachments for scart and never got them working." Again, proper research would indicate to you that HDMI to SCART conversion usually involves a degree of latency, something you DON'T want for most kinds of gaming. "I started having problems quickly with the mini hdmi ports, and asking some fellow pi users they stopped working completely." Maybe plugging in and out SCART converters caused that damage? You can't rule that out here, especially with cheap Chinese electronics where protection circuitry probably isn't there in the first place. "The Raspberry Pi Foundation is not listening to its user base." How many times have you contacted them yourself suggesting design changes they could make? Forget about what you think others do and don't want, what have you done to request change? And maybe there is other hardware you can make use of instead? There's plenty of alternative hardware around if you learn how to put Linux on it. "Most people want the regular hdmi ports back (I want the av port back)" I personally don't care about mini HDMI ports, particularly when having multiple HDMI ports side-by-side that may restrict plugs of a certain size going into them. I can't speak for "most people" because I don't have access to the contents of their minds. Clearly you think that you do. "and a lot of people want them to branch out into risc v models" But you don't mean that, do you? There are already a few RISC-V boards available for you to start playing with, nothing stops you doing that except you expecting an identical situation to what you have with ARM-based Pi boards - namely someone to make step-by-step videos showing you what to do with them without you having to learn how to do things yourself. Unfortunately, that's just the way it is with a hobbyist maker board turning into a "near consumer " device because of the great support around it - but I bet if I gave most people here an Orange Pi and said "put Linux on it", they wouldn't know where to start without a video showing them.
@kenknight5983Ай бұрын
@@terrydaktyllus1320 I did get an Orange Pi 800 and it's serving me better. The main issue with those mini hdmi ports is they KEEP BREAKING. People are complaining about them for a reason. Yes I should have done my research before buying the machine, but there was no warning that they were changing the ports (at least not a very prominent one). I went in expecting the same ports as the previous models and got a very rude awakening when I got home (especially as I don't have much money). Using it then through hdmi, the main port started playing up quickly, then I had to resort to the low resolution second port. If I had got one of the analogue tv hats working, there are only a few distros that actually support it, each with their limitations in emulation. People have been complaining about the mini hdmi ports since the pi 4, and the Raspberry Pi Foundation isn't listening. When I bought it during lockdown, the 400 was the only model available, and I quickly found out why. Anything that the Raspberry Pi Foundation neglects to do only fuels other makers to give us alternatives such as the Orange Pi

Interesting product, although the lack of full size HDMI ports is poor as there is plenty of space on the board (unlike the credit card sized Pi5) and they are far more durable. Not that bothered about NVMe as I don't use that on anything anyway. In fact I actually like SD cards as you basically end up with a new computer every time you insert a different one! My biggest gripe is that the Pi 5 (and now 500) don't support booting into older versions of Raspbian as I have a collection of projects using various versions assembled over the years. In fact I have a Pi 5 that I never use (apart from occasional testing) and much prefer the 4 or the Zero2. I even bought a Pi 400 brand new from Ebay for £48 delivered in the summer. I wonder now that once you add on the perciperals will the cost of a 500 be much different to the new cheap Chinese mini PCs that are flooding the market at the moment which would give "bigger bang for the buck".

I think you're all too obsessed with NVME anyway. If you're going to try to crowbar a bloated and privacy-hating OS like Windows on a Raspberry Pi and then do something stupid like trying to run modern Windows games on it, then I guess you need all the help you can get from your hardware (as well as for your stupidity). I run optimised Linux versions on my Pi and I see no speed issues with USB 3.0 drives - plus you've got more flexibility "chopping and changing" also.

It's great that you have the flexibility of "chopping and changing" your usb 3.0 connected drives as you desire but having the option of using an NVMe drive also falls under that same flexibility you talk about regardless of your opinion. It's not always about speed at the end of the day and for me personally it would be nice to have the ability to slot in an NVMe OR even an internal sata SSD because it is one less item taking up space, one less cable etc etc when traveling. As for you using an optimized Linux.... good for you, your point? I also use Linux so what? You can keep pushing your rhetoric about windows all you want but at the end of the day is any one actually listening to you about it? no, no they are not because people are going to continue to use what they know regardless of your rhetoric and that is ok but they will also view you as another one of those Linux elites trying to push your unwanted opinion on them.

" those are not even remotely the same thing for a comparison, also you basically just implied everyone is stupid because of the way you worded that entire sentence." That's subjective opinion on your part. You are welcome to it, I can ignore it. Next point. "Only a minority are really going to push the limits of what a pi can do anyway." That statement means nothing. Please don't lower arguments to school playground level by making "me and my big gang of pretend Internet mates" points. You have access to the contents of your own mind only, express your opinions, not what you believe others' opinions are. "It's great that you have the flexibility of "chopping and changing" your usb 3.0 connected drives as you desire but having the option of using an NVMe drive also falls under that same flexibility you talk about regardless of your opinion." This is not a relevant point because whether or not you approve of how I use USB 3.0 drives is of, again, no relevance to this conversation. "It's not always about speed at the end of the day and for me personally it would be nice to have the ability to slot in an NVMe OR even an internal sata SSD because it is one less item taking up space, one less cable etc etc when traveling." Yes, I already said that it's not about speed - and if you've not got space to plug in a tiny USB drive, you need a bigger home RAPIDLY. NVME connectors or boards are not designed to be swapped in and out constantly, you'll end up damaging them - especially through static electricity. Don't they teach basic electronics principles in school any more? "As for you using an optimized Linux.... good for you, your point? I also use Linux so what?" I'm sorry you're so "hard of thinking". If something is "optimised" then it probably works a lot better than something that "isn't optimised". It's a simple comparitive statement, don't they teach those in English grammar in school any more? "You can keep pushing your rhetoric about windows all you want but at the end of the day is any one actually listening to you about it?" This is a public discussion forum, I post my opinions here like anyone else does. Now you're suggesting those comments need to be approved by people like you first to ensure they meet your "editorial standards". And then you just look silly and lacking in self awareness. "no, no they are not because people are going to continue to use what they know regardless of your rhetoric and that is ok." So what? People keep smoking even though they're told constantly it's bad for their health. As far as I am concerned, when they are warned about it then "job done". They can decide to heed the advice or not. I can sleep soundly knowing I have given the advice. "no, no they are not because people are going to continue to use what they know regardless of your rhetoric and that is ok " Here we go again - it always ends in "elitist", "gate keeper" or "toxic Linux community" just because you're jealous of people that you think understand it better than you do but you can't be bothered to put in the correct time and effort to become better at it. That's your problem, not mine.

Shame they've not done a keyboard with CM slot, to make it a bit more futureproof. Also, the monitor should have stand-offs on the back to attach a standard Pi.

Very nice pi500. Now they can do an upgraded version with the nvme (pi500+), and even a better upgrade pi500 pro that is a laptop (with nvme and a screen) even it goes too 250bucks, is a budget clean solution for begginers and for those who doesnt need much "horsepower" on a computer.

The Orange Pi 800 addressed the two biggest complaints that I have about the Pi400, by providing a headphone jack and full sized HDMI. I had higher hopes for the Pi500. The Pi500 could have been redemption for the Pi400, but alas, it falls flat. New processor, otherwise the same old problems. That monitor looks nice though.
@terrydaktyllus1320Ай бұрын
I was holding out for the new ZX Spectrum but just ordered the Pi 500 instead as it will do all the ZX Spectrum will do and a whole lot more - a good pre-Christmas surprise. Nice monitor also. The space for NVME is interesting, presumably they're leaving their options open for a pre-populated version going forward but, like you said, at what price point? I'm not sure I care about NVME on the Pi, external USB 3.0 drives are perfectly fine in my experience and give you more flexibility. I'm not one of these people that plays "Top Trumps" with their computers on Reddit, constantly looking for the biggest numbers all the time (most Ryzen cores, most gimmicky 4K monitors used simultaneously, most kidneys donated by mummy and daddy to buy me that new overpriced NVIDIA GPU for Christmas, etc. etc.) If a computer system "feels" fast enough, then I am generally happy and I've no issue with USB 3.0 drives because what OS you use and how optimised it is is more important anyway. I'm also glad they've managed to keep the price down to close to the Pi 400 - less than £100 for an "Amiga-like" computing platform with built-in keyboard is not bad at all.

@terrydaktyllus1320Ай бұрын
@@Sherlock385 It's not worth that. When you get to £100+ (100€+), you will get far better value by picking up a used SFF PC online, a HP EliteDesk mini PC of the right model will have NVME built in. And, again, I have to ask the same question - if lack of NVME is a "deal breaker" for you, what did you did you do on computers before NVME came out?
@Sherlock385Ай бұрын
@@terrydaktyllus1320 Again nope, because I like the fact that it is integrated into a keyboard. I already have about 10 different Pis and one Pi400. "what did you did I do on computers before NVME came out" - is a silly question - been connecting SSDs by other means, of course ... but the Pi500 should be an ideal platform for an integrated SSD that doesn't need to be attached externally, so that's the main reason for my disappointment.
@terrydaktyllus1320Ай бұрын
@@Sherlock385 "Again nope, because I like the fact that it is integrated into a keyboard." So what? I think you're setting your expectations too high anyway, for what is supposed to be a cheap computing device for makers. "I already have about 10 different Pis and one Pi400." I wasn't aware that this discussion was about "comparing manhood sizes" but I probably have somewhere in the region of 50+ SBCs that include all Raspberry Pi models as well as Orange Pi's, Banana Pi's, Asus Tinker Board, Atomic Pi, a few Olimex boards and even a few more you probably haven't heard of. A lot of them run my custom Gentoo Linux builds on them, an OS I have been using as my main OS since 2003. ""what did you did I do on computers before NVME came out" - is a silly question" No, it exposes YOU as being a bit silly if you make a statement like "not having NVME is a deal breaker". So, again, what did you do with your computers before NVME, especially with that clearly "impressive" collection of Pi's you have, most of which didn't support NVME anyway? You seem incapable of telling me "why". "but the Pi500 should be an ideal platform for an integrated SSD that doesn't need to be attached externally, so that's the main reason for my disappointment." Why do you need an integrated SSD? You're making the same point again without explaining why you need it? I am a computer engineer, I am interested in these kinds of discussions with people. I think too many people are NOT engineers in an ecosystem of maker boards where engineering should be at the core and they therefore expect everything to be crammed onto these devices because they don't understand the concepts of working out first what you need to do with the computing platform you are about to build before designing it accordingly - for example, someone using a Pi to, say, drive a 3D printer or weather station probably doesn't care about NVME. However, some "non engineer" trying to crowbar bloated and privacy-hating Windows onto a Pi just in an attempt to play "Starfailed" or "Cybersplatt 4044" on it probably needs all the hardware help they can get (and also training in computer systems engineering).
