fun fact. in one of the earlier levels, or period, witchs dont like tables. cant climb them. have to run around. it makes it easy to bait it so that, instead of a terrifying monster chase, you get a yackity sax-worthy table run.

SO glad I ended up landing it, the timing is very tight! It's actually been refined since then and we now use a setup to warp somebody to the person being launched right before they reach the ground and die, since the warped person has no velocity they can land safely at the helipad. It doesn't look quite as impressive as the explosive ammo cushion but it is much safer to time.

In order to escape everybody standing must be in the escape vehicle, so if you have somebody ahead the rest will need to either enter an incap state or die for the last person (me) to finish the finale. Since we broke the finale a bit by skipping the bridge activation at the beginning, it behaves a little weirdly and tends to eventually kill the last guy that "escaped". The end has already been triggered by this point so it doesn't matter, it's just an odd thing the game does.

Hey Master, saw you were responding to a bunch of stuff and that's really cool so thanks for that, but I was curious why a couple times when you or any other player would get held by a charger/hunter/jockey you'd instantly idle. Just noticed an wondered a reason. Anyways good run it definitely was worth the watch. :)

If you're charged and quickly idle then unidle you won't take any damage. You can also cancel the animation of your character getting up by idling/unidling.

Thanks to you for watching the run! Questions usually come in so we hang around for a while and I try to respond to anything I can. Building on what Failzz said just to be clear, you can only avoid damage by rapidly idling while charged, it doesn't work for other specials. Idling to instantly cancel animations works for everything, though, even getting hit by a tank for a quick recovery to get your ass out of there.

I understand, Dark Flight, that you just see the completed, produced videos of theirs on KZbin and don't know what goes on behind the scenes which lead to these runs made to be visually appealing. I'll try to give you info about what the runs are really doing, They use cheat commands and scripts, and many of them. Before being played, recorded and edited to hide what it really looks like playing in real-time, the runs are done in slow motion of at least half time, sometimes quarter time which is how they are so quick and accurate when they play it back in real-time. They also use many other developer commands to see enemies through walls and exactly where invisible walls are. There are also many scripts, one to bunnyhop perfectly automatically (we time that manually here which is very difficult for a human), some to delete enemies to plop new ones down exactly where they need them for boosts, and they also automate survivors as bots to boost perfectly and rename them in-game as if they were a real player, so some "people" you see in the video that look skilled to you may not even be human. It is also segmented, meaning each map is tried individually hundreds of times, then strung together later in editing into one completed campaign. Because of all of this that actually happens when they are playing and recording their demos to be played back later and recorded without all of these commands on, their visual spectacles simply wouldn't at all be possible in any live venue such as this.

A couple of reasons. One of the big reasons is that there is a bug in the starting level of Swamp Fever that causes you to not be able to die, idle or vote while the gondola event is active, this bug is triggered by transitioning to the campaign after completing a finale successfully because Valve is great at video games. It's very important to run it first for that reason. Beyond that, this is the WR ordering which we're used to that generally gets the hard stuff out of the way earlier which is also nice in a marathon environment so you aren't dreading difficult tricks for too long.

I often see this in TAS speedruns and other speedruns of this game, is there a benefit to leaving Nick alive/ensuring he's the fastest by getting him adrenaline? Or is it just preference?

Preference, as there is no functional difference between the characters. In this run Nick had POV so we purposely gave him more of the cool stuff.

UnCloud 2.0 in other source games u can find your scroll wheel down to jump. I believe in l4d2 that is not allowed. It's a keybind most bhopers would use in cs source meaning you didn't have to be precise. Just rip ur mouse wheel and it'll spam 500 jumps.

I meant that in cs 1.6 especially, css and csgo to a lesser extent, you still had to time your mousewheel jumps to gain proper speed (unless the server had autobhop). If mousewheel is not allowed in l4d yea that would make it harder, cause its harder to jump with space etc.

@@kapnkoi4410 There isn't anything disallowed about it, it just simply isnt effective at all to spam mwheel to hop in L4D's version of the engine. You will miss hops constantly and perform far worse than just timing it precisely. To the main topic, yes, there are some other Source games that require timing like CS, I don't remember what was said in this run now but we would have been referring to other speedruns people would be familiar with, Portal/2 and Half-Life/2, which can be spammed. It's important to make this distinction that hops in L4D works massively different from those found in Portal and HL.

Not completely sure what you mean so hopefully I'm answering the right thing... When we boost each other with pipes/molotovs/biles we call that "throwable boosting" When we use the grenade launcher we call it GL boosts, usually. There's also idle warping/omniwarping which is when we idle to teleport teammates to the person ahead.

In general we do campaigns in order from hardest to easiest. Swamp Fever always needs to be first though due to a glitch. If you don't do it first you'll have god mode and won't be able to call any votes after starting the ferry event on lvl 1.

Our community actually had a bi-weekly challenge thing where we experimented with modding in new ideas for runs and created side categories for them, for example one was that you got a very short burst of adrenaline when killing enemies, we called that one Addicted. A versus speedrunning one was in the plans but it just took too much effort to keep up with so it never ended up happening. Doing it in standard versus would be a bit awkward, special spawn RNG would be pretty brutal. We were thinking about what each special could do to enable skips, there is a way to float and be pulled across areas with the Smoker, you might be able to take advantage of Charger knockback to cross some gaps, same for Tank. You may notice a lot of specials missing from that list, which was another problem, too many would just be useless. Spitter boosting is a thing (works similarly to throwable boosts seen here) but timing it is extremely difficult, The Hunter would be useless, Jockey is useless, Boomer is possibly useless since it only attracts a horde which can be controlled much more easily with a bile bomb already.

Swamp Fever has to be first because of a bug where finishing another campaign prevents players from idle-warping or dying for quite some time after the ferry is started, which blocks progress. Besides that, we're just used to this order because of our WR attempts, which is basically hardest to easiest, so we rolled with it.

Since this category is Any Difficulty as it's about doing tricks and clearing the maps as quickly as possible we can change the difficulty freely. We vote to Expert to kill teammates at certain points when others are going ahead as you can't exit the map unless all alive players are in the end saferoom.

On Expert team damage is 100% and default zombie hit is 20|10 hp (face|back) damage. On easy it's ~5% team damage and 2|1 hp zombie damage.

Friendly fire is disabled on easy difficulty, and the common infected do 1 dmg per hit from the front and 0,5 dmg per hit from the back. Please don't spread false information.

This category can be played in any order so long as you fully complete each campaign. We laid it out in rough order of difficulty and it is the pathing that WR attempts generally use because of the need to reset for a grenade launcher spawn on swamp fever and the difficulty of a lot of things in dark carnival.

We run on a older version of the game (version 2.0.2.7). Most of what we do is still possible in the latest version on steam though. The only differences off the top of my head are load times, and there's a clip on fairgrounds that was supposed to prevent you from getting on the train tracks. Granted that doesn't really matter too much in coop.

Yeah, basically everything here can be done on Newest. Here are the exceptions off the top of my head and their possible workarounds, Dark Carnival 2 the area we boost up into where the toy train is has a blocker, but the next window just around the corner does not so you only need to go slightly out of your way to do the same thing. Hard Rain 2 has a clip on that little wall I climbed on to get to the pipe. This one doesn't have a backup, but if you get a GL spawn for some more cool skips which we unfortunately did not get, you'll be avoiding this wall anyway. Hard Rain finale jesus spot is blocked where we stood. There is an alternate one off the pier where the boat comes that still works fine (with less players). Parish 3 fence that we warped burhac to right before the sewers is blocked. You have to take a little more time to go around the intended way in Newest. That said, the older game versions are standalone and super easy to download through the game's speedrunning Discord so it isn't a big deal to get the proper versions to get involved with running the game. We're pretty lucky that it was so easy, actually, many other games have a much harder time accessing older versions.

i speed run this on realism expert with a few buddies, its super fun and very unforgiving most of the time if someone gets down we just leave them to die. There are alot of almost impossible skips and jump boost on zombies heads that make the difference on saving time. But this seemed little slow for a run on campaign mode, i dont watch too many l4d2 speedruns and iv never seen the grenade launcher trick prob cuz it would do too much team dmg on expert to be viable

We actually have Expert Realism subcategories on speedrun.com/l4d2 that might interest you. This run was a bit slow, unfortunate setup issues contributed quite a bit to missed boosts and such which spent a lot of time. Our WR is about 8 minutes faster like Daroot said, stuff like Dark Carnival 4 is a big reason for that. We were getting runs ~4 minutes faster in practice, but, we did our best. This is a 16 minute improvement since the last time it was featured in 2016 and showcased a lot more skips so still quite an improvement regardless.

There are two categories that can be run in this game, Any Difficulty and Expert Realism. Doing a true speedrun with the tricks shown (and more we didn't get to) is much more dangerous on Expert because of the fact that we naturally have to split up a lot to do things efficiently, so those runs tend to have more resets and just isn't reliable enough to run in a live setting such as this. Both runs are perfectly real, there is no reason to run on a higher difficulty outside of simply saying you've done it. It doesn't change the strats, really, just the chance of losing time.

This run we did is a legitimate run without scripts, cheats or segmenting, unlike many others you may see that use all of the above to show a lower time. That could never be run in a marathon and isn't RTA, it's barely even TAS.

Perhaps they aren't easy, but they certainly can't be said as being more difficult than all in one go in an RTA run without help from scripts or slowing down the game time. Not to disparage that type of work on a TAS, but these are very different things with very different playing styles required which are for very different environments. Runs which take part in the base game without any additional help without scripts are all close to this and can be seen on the speedrun.com/l4d2 page. Saying TAS runs "take much more skill" is a complete misnomer. It trades making aspects easier or more automated with the requirement of doing it more precisely to shave off smaller fractions of time. You cannot compare that to what is done here, which is what the original commenter did by saying his record is 43 minutes, if it exists. That would be done segmented as a TAS.
