on the final stage i accidently destroyed ALL MY GAS CANS twice when i reached it because of tanks, but somehow during a close tank fight and manuvering i was able to fill up the last gas can and run to freedom

This is a Mutation called “Last Man on Earth.” The trade-off is that you’re the only Survivor without the other three to help you, but it removes all the Common Infected. Unfortunately you still have to worry about the Special Infected hunting you down.
