Honestly man I don't think it's possible to give this game a sequel. I feel like any new gameplay features you could add to justify calling it a sequel would just take away from the experience. Maybe the best thing to do would be to give Left 4 Dead 2 a full remaster in Source 2 and maybe make a new Left 4 Dead game that offers a different take on the IP. Maybe a spinoff.
@kel_ski Жыл бұрын
honestly, i agree. i feel like some games just reach their peak mechanically, and any additions or changes after that just ruins balance. Halo 3 to Halo Reach is a perfect example of that. sometimes you just perfect a formula, and leave it at that :^) kinda like CS:GO

@@kel_ski Doing "sequels" in general is hard. Be it movies or games. Often times the first movie was the best and the second ok but the third pretty bad. Back4Blood is exactly what was to be expected, L4D without a crazy amount of Valve shine, if anything it perfectly shows why Valve is so highly regarded and why Turtle Rock cant survive without them. The amount of detail and attention that goes in Valve's titles is absolutely insane, but people tend to not really think about half of it until they start comparing with other games, putting B4B side-by-side with L4D2 is jarring as hell, like they forgot about half the game. But then you realize Valve made that other half of the game 😂
@jazzyj7834 Жыл бұрын
Which is a crazy take in my opinion because I love B4B, more than L4D2, but it's difficult to play these days because the playbase is so small. I think a lot of the people who bash on B4B didn't actually play it. As a game it's insanely fun by itself, and it really expanded on the L4D formula quite well. But I guess most people care more about graphics than gameplay and want a simpler, bare-bones experience and don't like change and complexity added to the formula. Specializing in a specific weapon type or gameplay style? That's no fun, apparently. Let's all play the same character with the same basic abilities that never change and approach each situation the same way! Character choice, card choice, weapon choice, etc all matter in B4B, but in L4D your choice of character is irrelevant to the gameplay, and there's no card system to allow you to change how you play. But hey, the zombies ragdoll with more realistic physics, so who cares about player choice.

@MultiCool5510 ай бұрын
@@jazzyj7834 What you point out I do agree with to an extent, I love the increased weapon variety and the cards system was a pretty interesting spin on the formula imo. Generally the issues I've noticed when playing are that none of the characters/survivors are nearly as memorable as the L4D crew, the fact that so many of the special infected looked so similar to one another that they were difficult to tell apart a lot of the time, no mod support (Probably why L4D has survived for so long), and the campaigns being way too long imo. With all of this combined, I just lost interest. Obviously most of these gripes are subjective, but I think if a few were addressed, B4B would still have a decent sized player base.
@redbool11152 ай бұрын
That’s not actually why it sucked. It sucked because only 3 people who worked on L4D worked on b4b. And by the way, when it comes to the original L4D, valve barely contributed to the actual development. It was mainly turtle rock

@kingol4801 Жыл бұрын
Not really. It is beyond imbalanced and backwards. Zombies are supposed to be tough to kill. Humans should die from about anything in the apocalypse…. And yet it is the other way around in L4D. As a “zombie” game, it sucks. As a team game with squishy monsters, it is somewhat ok. Somewhat because zombies are utterly inconsistent. Their strength is purely conditional, and they die from about anything. Example of bad, wonky (conditional) balance - Charger insta-kills. Charger is kinda weak, and yet one abuse of map design results in him completely screwing over the rest of the game. All zombies are beyond feast-or-famine. Either just instantly win if X/Y/Z happens or instantly lose if A/B/C is done by survivors. Also, the game rewards map knowledge. This is also beyond backwards, since, lore-wise, survivors are supposed to encounter locations for the first time. L4D is a ruined zombie game. It has 0 immersion and horrendous wonky, inconsistent balance. Project Zomboid or Dead Island 2 are miles and miles above in terms of being a “zombie” game.

@@kingol4801 I respect of what your views about the game. I understand it's not for everyone. Project Zomboid is an interesting game and might wanna play it, not so much about dead island though. @@kingol4801 I guess every zombie game has to be the exact same? Years ago, when l4d was released, I used to host a community server since I wasn't 18 and couldn't just buy it. I remember spending all day trading items in TF2 to get enough to buy the game from another player. That is also how I bought every single game, ever. So, at one point some people actually joined and they were asking me to spawn stuff for them, then I figured out sv_cheats 1 would allow them to do so themselves. I had fun from watching their in game chat. That's how good this game was. L4d2 is basically all that and more. Especially with the mods. Ranging from hentai to just fun. New mechanics, everything. Skins, new weapons, name it. There is not a valve game I dislike. And this comes from the dude with 600 TF2 accounts. (premium) Worlds cannot describe how much I appreciate Valve for their hard work.

It's because it's the best execution of the genre from the word go. You can stop playing for years and pick it back up like nothing has been lost. Modern versions of it have a constant barrage of FOMO to try to keep people playing, but all it does is make people drop the game entirely once they take a break for longer than a couple months. The loot and cards don't actually add anything to the games besides a skinner box, and people tend to get annoyed with those once they realize they're being manipulated.

Hey new sub here. Saw your DRG video first (Rock and stone, brother) and came over to look at this old classic. Great video! I'm sure I'm only the 200th person to mention it but if you're looking for games that were very directly inspired by L4D and can, if you're being very uncharitable and reductive, almost be called L4D reskins then I'd suggest Vermintide 2 for that medieval fantasy take on the genre and honestly before playing it I never realized just how endearing of a character the enemies can have when they're not mindless grunting zombies but adorable, murderous rat boys (and friends) who actually talk back at you. For a sci-fi gothic take you could try Darktide, the newer game by the same studio. It has some issues with progression right now but man if the atmosphere and core gameplay loop isn't fantastic. The biggest mix-up to the formula that game adds is probably the fact that there's lots of enemies who actually shoot back at you instead of try to claw your face off.

I wanna take this chance to remind y'all of one of the many reasons I've lost faith in Valve over the years: complete lack of management. L4D3 was already in the works. Entire first chapter completed, knew what direction they wanted to take it, assets made/reused for alpha & beta testing. So what happened? Internal disagreement over whether the project should be in the Unreal engine (or Unity, one of those Un-engines) or be one of the first new games in Source2. The team was split 50/50 on this decision, and since they couldn't agree...they stopped. That's it. They just stopped the moment a single dispute came up because Valve lacks management to see a job to completion.

The last time i played L4D was like 2009ish. I just picked it back up again after i got a gaming PC and just found out about custom campaigns. There's custom campaigns out there that are just as good as the official ones!

Valve are honestly just wizards at game design, and the fact most their games still stand up to modern games shows

I was addicted to this game when it came out. I'm kinda sad I dont have any friends to enjoy it anymore and people just play back 4 blood which I dont like.

Yo you should try custom campaigns on the workshop. Most of them are hit or miss, you'll occasionally get good maps or bad maps

The campaign section of the workshop isn't filled with campaigns and is filled with anime mods which I hate so much. And speaking of that the L4D2 workshop has barley any good content as of late, sure there are some good mods but most of it is just the same anime girl but with less articles of clothing each time.

One game that I've played that has come somewhat close to a slightly similar experience to Left 4 Dead has been Anacrusis. Its probably not going to be the next Left 4 Dead 3, but if the early access issues get ironed out it could be a fun and worthwhile experience.
@kel_ski Жыл бұрын
i’ll have to look into it!

Little fun fact, the Anacrusis is being worked on by one of the L4D writers, Chet Faliszek.

ong the gameplay whilst sometimes laggy and buggy is so fun everything is unique and the music bro is goated ive played L4D2 on and off since 2009 and in 2023 at 18 still playing it and with pc mods it makes the fun last longer

What makes l4d2 so amazing is that it feels like a genuine fun, complete product. It released at a time where online multiplayer was maturing but before the current player retention/gaas nonsense. I love that I can just turn the game on and start playing without long tutorials, challenges, or store crap pestering me. Really wish valve would release it on current gen with 4K/120, cross play, and some form of mod support like Bethesda titles. I’d pay full price

"You need teammates" And then you see a random on youtube parkouring his way out of a full campaign taking no damage without the help of any player nor bot(they kill bots at the start)... well, I guess this people had 14 years to master that...

for folks looking for anything to scratch a similar itch, try vermintide 2. it's medieval fantasy, and more melee focused, but has left 4 dead's mission structure, essentially. The game is often on sale as well. the progression system is kind of grindy tho, takes awhile to get all characters to max lvl. also no versus mode
