Psyker's head pop ability is actually extremely useful at any difficulty (but even more so when you play lvl 3+) because it can murder the tankiest special enemies (the dude with the chain axe, all the corrupted ogryns). You say it's bad because it's a single target ability in a horde shooter, but different classes have different roles. In the case of the Psyker, you're better at murdering the beefy dudes than you are at pulverising hordes (though the staff weapon can do that as well). That's why I love games like Darktide and Vermintide, everyone in a squad can do something slightly different that makes a big difference when shit hits the fan!

The Veteran is more long range made for picking out high value targets from afar, so that's why using a lasgun up close isn't too effective.

After lvl 12 you get the psyker staff which gives you an aoe. Force sword was so much fun to use
