Agreed. Also if you wanted to make a game that isn't too related to the rest of the series, they couldve done so much more with it. For example they couldve made a game thats more story based and shows problems of fighting a war as a pawn waiting to be replaced or how life is truly hell having to live in an active warzone. They literally just needed to polish it up more if they wanted this entry to be unique that they just failed to do.

Toshifumi Nabeshima (director) and Hashimoto Shinji (producer) are what went wrong. SE didn't demand to make a stealth-action. Nabeshima decided to do that because "he had more experiecne with action games" . And Shinji allowed that. Moreover, Shinji was also the producer of FM: Evolved, so he basically just stepped on the same rake. Honestly I think the idea of some of the combat being on foot and having to find Wanzers to pilot while exploring could’ve been a lot of fun, and the first Wanzer being a broken one for a tutorial sounds like a good idea tbh. Imagine how cool it would be if your Wanzer could break if you let yourself get shot enough, and then it would actually affect the handling and abilities and stuff until you could find another, like in Mechwarrier 2!

Yoji Shinkawas art is so recognisable. For all the issues DS had, it's still a beautiful, well crafted, detailed and wonderful experience. The story is brilliant and really gets you in the feels, the gameplay is way more than walking. Theres a real sense of achievement and its got a great skill tree and leveling up system that feels natural. And the unique and INCREDIBLE social network mode is something else...to leave a ladder for someone or to find that people have built and maintained a highway for you or left supplies and a shelter for you in remote places... Being able to acknowledge and be acknowledged...to help and be helped is a very underrated mechanic.

Then they do the non Tacticals like Front Mission Evolved and this. So it just to me seems like there is not a Champion for it to be translated working there.

Why do they name their walking tanks _bedbug with male suffix (-r)_ or an _armored bedbug_ ? I mean, _Wanze_ is bedbug in German, a word with a female genus _Die Wanze_ and with the use of the suffix would turn into a male version of the noun _Der Wanzer_ which one may do like when trying to say _male widow_ _Witwe → Wirwer_ . As for being _Wanderpanzer_ shortened to _Wanzer_ and standing for _walking tank_ (according to a fan wiki), well it's technically more of a _hiking/wandering/migrating tank/shell/armor/shield_ if you more accurately translate it (laufen is the German word for walking) and sounds a lot more like an unintentional combination of _Wanze_ (begbug) and _Panzer_ (tank/armor/...). Otherwise I view them as _hiking tanks, wandering shells, or migrating turtles_ since a turtle's shell is also called a _Panzer_ . I love the review, and I know I'm late, but having nothing new to bring to the review itself, I thought that since I was raised in Germany (though left the country after highschool), I'd give a more elaborate comment on the name _Wanzer_ . Hope this was somewhat of an enjoyable read!

So, fun fact: the Front Mission franchise was originally an idea by Square to make a game that could appeal to both Japanese and Western audiences... so what happened to all the games? Front Mission was a late Super Famicom title and with 32 bit consoles on the horizon, Square got cold feet and chose not to release it in the US. Front Mission eventually got released in the US for the Nintendo DS. Front Mission: Gun Hazard was a side story that plays like one of the many Assault Suits games, but has RPG elements, and allows you to jump in and out of your wanzer freely. Remember this for later, because Gun Hazard was well loved. Anyway, the game came out in 1996 on the Super Famicom, and as a result, Square decided not to bother. Front Mission 2 was the series' first jump into 3D visuals on the Playstation. Square chose not to release this game in the west because Square stated the story was simply too serious and mature for western audiences to handle. Remember: this was intended to be a franchise that could appeal to both audiences. Front Mission Alternative ditched the turn based strategy for some real time strategy gameplay. This game ALMOST made it to the US, but given the bad PR due to the game being slow, monotonous, and at times boring since you spend more time observing and clicking through menus, the US release was cancelled. Front Mission 3, in 1999, was the first time the series would finally see a release in the states. FINALLY, Front Mission makes it to the US, and... well the translation leaves a lot to be desired, and unless you know how the world of Front Mission works, you may find yourself lost. Front Mission 4 on the PS2 did make it to the US as well, but you probably didn't even know of its existence. Its release in the US was so quiet, you wouldn't know Front Mission 4 was a thing. It's considered a bit divisive among Front Mission fans for the fact it introduced Wanzers that could repair on field, meaning repair kits were worthless. Front Mission Online was another game to be on Square's Play Online service, the same launcher that powered Final Fantasy XI. Although there were plans to release the game in the west, it seems this plan never came to fruition, and considering how poorly managed FFXI's western release was, that may have been a blessing in disguise. However, this game was also on a limited time frame as per the game's story, so yes, its shut down was inevitable. Front Mission 5... well, Square didn't even bother with this one. Front Mission 5 was a late PS2 game that actually tied up all the loose ends from the previous games, and supplemental materials... including Front Mission Online. Let that sink in, you needed to have knowledge of EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF MEDIA RELATED TO FRONT MISSION TO UNDERSTAND THIS GAME AND ITS CHARACTERS. Front Mission Evolved was meant to be a soft reboot of the franchise, and was put into the hands of a western developer. The idea was to take Gun Hazard and translate that into a 3D state. Unfortunately, RPG mechanics are stripped, and you cannot enter and exit wanzers freely. The on-foot sections of the game are a sloppy, poor attempt at a cover shooter that just does not work at all. And then there's Left Alive. I won't go into it, because in all honesty, we knew it was bad because Square announced it out of the blue, and its release was super quiet.

Wow. Talk about Executive favoritism because Square and later Square Enix tends to focus more on FF than these. If Squeenix gives the franchise to say, either Capcom (hope it's more like DMC5 and less RE3 Remake) or Platinum Games, it would have been better.

I am a huge fan of Front Mission 3 and MGS and played the crap out of them on the PS1. When I heard there was a game on sale that was in the Front Mission series with a plot like MGS I was all on board. Until I saw this. Meanwhile this game seems to assume that just letting a conversation shift from dead serious to cartoonish depending on dialogue choices is fine.

Be a pilot, a sailor, an engineer or even a medic, until the real, ugly and near-dystopian reveal of war and why all these nifty resources are really used for... spec ops: the line style. Sadly, its just another whiney young adult, thrusted into the battle and getting an inkling of using those awesome mechs for a brief period of time. Wundabar...

I've almost bought this game a couple times because of Yoji Shinkawa's involvement, and I didn't even know it was a Front Mission game. It's not even like I've never heard of that series either, it's just that this game is entirely clickbait for MGS fans so it practically hid that in its marketing. The words 'Front Mission' are not in the PSstore description, but Metal Gear Solid is mentioned by name. Genius.
