I'm going 5 mph over the speed limit, therefore I'm driving "fast" in the fast and and I don't have to get over for anyone." WRONG! actually the speed limit is the same in every lane of the PASSING LANE. HOWEVER, PER THE LAW. SLOWER traffic keep right. It's not slow traffic keep right. Thanks for putting up this video to educate the public. Far too many drivers do not understand this rule. A couple of comments; 1). Up here in Boston we don't use our 'blinkahs' lest we give up the "element of surprise". I jest but it's mostly true. 😫 2). Left lane hogging may not be your number one direct cause of accidents but it begets much of the behaviour that you describe(e.g. tailgating, changing lanes quickly, .distraction, aggressive driving). We've all seen drivers trying to change lanes and pass the left lane hog only to see the left lane hog speed up to block the driver trying to get around them. Road rage ensues. Still, despite a huge disparity in driver skills it is still amazing that we can move a huge volume of vehicles on our motorways 24/7. It would seem that anarchy would break out at any minute but we eventually get where we're going. That in itself is amazing.

Changing lanes too quickly, alongside tailgating, is a frequent result of road rage caused by people blocking the left lane. Regardless, left lane hogging is most definitely a high cause of accidents whether or not in the top 10 causes within your state of Colorado. Also, there is scientific research explaining the causes of impeding traffic. A corollary of keeping right except to pass is to pass quickly and return to speed. Speeding to pass shouldn't be punishable within reason. Hence, countries outside of the USA have speeds for different lanes.

People violating the Left Lane Law cause other people to have to drive recklessly to get where they're going. And even if people DON'T drive recklessly, you're still forcing them to "safely" change speeds and weave in and out of traffic. Those are THREE of the top causes of traffic accidents right there, and they are literally all caused by violators of the Left Lane Law. So saying that it's not in the Top 10... I feel it's being dishonest.
@jbm714 жыл бұрын
Charity Diary Listen to what the trooper said. He’s absolutely right: NONE of those other violations that are among the top ten causes of accidents are actually CAUSED by another driver misusing the left/passing lane. All drivers, when they do encounter a “left lane hog”, are still 100% responsible for responding safely and legally to the situation. They must slow down and maintain a safe following distance behind that left lane driver, as long as necessary. They must not be aggressive toward the left lane driver in any way: no tailgating, no flashing headlights, no honking horns, no gestures. If they decide to change lanes and pass that driver, they must wait until there is a safe opportunity, use their signals, and then change lanes and complete the pass safely. If in so doing, they make a mistake and cause an accident, then the accident is 100% their fault, not the left lane driver’s fault. This is not to say that it isn’t wrong to “hog” the left/passing lane. It is absolutely wrong to do so, because it creates unnecessary traffic congestion which can in turn lead to potentially-hazardous situations. But if all the trailing drivers respond properly to the situation, as they are required by law to do, no accident will occur. The trooper is correct: two wrongs don’t make a right.

The angry response may have been triggered by something another driver did, but the real cause is the emotional instability of the driver who gets enraged. A driver who is under proper control of his emotions may feel some anger at something some other driver does like misuse the left lane, but he doesn’t let it affect his own driving, and doesn’t react with aggression toward the other driver.

Thank you for educating the public! Because the rules for left lanes vary so much from state-to-state, there's a lot of ignorance out there. In my state there is no such law. Our VC only states that traffic moving at less than the average speed of traffic must keep right, but there is no passing lane law per se or lanes reserved for passing. In many states, the left lane is ONLY for actively passing, while not so in others. And in yet others, the left lane being reserved for passing only, applies to roadways with certain speed limits. It can get confusing. But err on the side of keeping out of the left lane on freeways, unless passing, if you're not sure of the law.

Could you define what is meant by "actively passing"? I use the left lane for passing, but the guy SPEEDING up behind me perceives this as not getting back into the slow lane so they can proceed with speeding. In your two wrongs don't make a right example, you one doesn't have to have the intention of slowing the speeding driver down. Rather, it's a natural consequence of the driver getting behind a vehicle that is using the passing lane within the speed limit to not continuously go back and forth between the two lanes (which would increase the likelihood of accidents and should be unnecessary). If I look ahead and see that the right lane is still going too slow, yet the driver behind me expects me to get back into that lane, am I legally obligated? It seems to me, if I'm still passing at a reasonable rate, I don't need to get back into the slow lane for a speeding driver.

Appreciating this very measured view on the matter. I get very irritated with the left lane hogs but it is not worth becoming aggressive and dangerous over. In fact becoming hostile just usually sets people more in their ways because it gives them an "enemy" (often it just ends up being "speeders bad"). I hope with better drivers education, continual enforcement of both left lane hogging and aggressive drivers, we will have safer roads in the future and be able to justify raising (or ideally even removing in some cases) highway speed limits. Personally I believe that the safe speed to travel varies widely depending on the capabilities of both drivers and vehicles, and that there are situations where it's safe to travel significantly faster than the posted speed limit, but meanwhile there are no situations where it's acceptable to tailgate, cut other drivers off, or especially do purely spiteful actions such as brake checking. When I move left I usually immediately put my right turn signal on to let any other know my intention to move back to the right. Now I'm going between 5-10 miles over the limit to pass and I can't count how many times some idiot who was a half mile behind in the left lane when I started is now on my ass because he's too impatient to take his foot off the gas for 10-15 seconds. And they even sees my signal that I am planning on moving back to the right. My last road trip between northern and southern California there was a truck that got on the freeway the same time as me. He rode the left lane for more than 50 miles even when there were three open lanes to his right. He forced so many cars to pass on his right but, he didn't give a darn(wanted to use other word).

I wish the number one cause of road rage was back seat driving, because I think it should be. Pestering a driver tends to anger them. Not a good thing to do on the highway. Especially if the passenger is known to have bad depth perception and they still panic over a break light turning on 20 car lengths ahead of them. OLD PEOPLE!....

Sounds good Must be nice driving in your state. In my state won't work you have some people driving 90 and some driving 30 and so many cars if you get in the left, you might as well stay for a while very hard getting back. Then everything suddenly stops, and we are now bumper to bumper, and we have every driver from every state and also every country. I also think they don't sell cars with turn signals here. However, we have lots of Sunshine so everyone should. see the road.

You said "changing lanes too quickly". you didn't mean: too often, right? because that's why [eft lane hogs create dangerous situations by making drivers behind them change the lanes. And also they make other drivers angry, which is another dangerous situation.

Forcing all traffic into one lane creates more wear and tear on that one lane. On a recent road trip across multiple states and using multiple highways/freeways, including CO, I started driving in the left lane because the right lane was so tore up.

Left lane bandits ruin it for everyone and are a danger to all. I usually am doing 10 over and move over for another going faster, always checking my mirrors. It's also frustrating when I'm patiently waiting for a super slow LLB to pass an 18-wheeler, and someone is trying to pass on the right to cut me off and tailgate said LLB to push him thru. LLB also are the ones NOT ✔️ their six and, therefore, not moving out of the way for emergency personnel as well......

I’ve got 3 million plus miles trucking US and Canada and from what I see is police pick and choose what they want to enforce. And states claim they are all about safety. Lol. It’s the furthest thing from the truth. It’s about revenue. There are some very simple things to pass that would make interstates somewhat safe again. I’ve tried to pass several ideas on to lawmakers but fallen on deaf ears.
@merrillgehman35643 жыл бұрын
Steven. I talked with this officer and explained to him that he missed an opportunity to educate drivers to also use the middle lane as a passing lane only to, instead of ignoring that problem, which would allow a few drivers to move out of the left lane more quickly. But police don’t realize the middle lane problem, because they’re usually in the left lane and also because they aren’t restricted from the left lane like we are .

Trust me! Traffic just outside the Denver metro area along I-25 or even I-70 could be cleared up with a lot more left lane tickets and less with "click it or ticket" crap! 4000 tickets a year for left lane violations in the entire State is a JOKE!!! Sooner or later, you guys might realize that keeping that left lane clear for those more lucrative speeding tickets is something that you can benefit a lot more from. (Maybe you'd like to enlist some volunteers with dashcams and have them go about 5-10 UNDER the speed limit in the right lanes? -- Think "sewer pig" or basketball "pick" here.) I-25 north of Denver around 120th all the way to Wyoming is especially bad and you know it. I-25 south of Denver isn't exactly "nice" either, especially between Colorado Springs and Pueblo. Excepting for every other road in Colorado, 4000 tickets on I-25 alone isn't even close to addressing any problem. Very simply, the "problem" is road rage. And on the highways, road rage is almost exclusively caused by the very people you addressed here -- left lane hogs who take it upon themselves to slow other people down (never mind any tailgaters). But then, we're talking about that "other law" about full on inhibiting of traffic that CSP never seems to enforce either. Do I sound critical or even cynical? 30+ years of watching you guys almost exclusively hand out victimless speeding tickets and NOTHING ELSE, maybe I am. ... And need I point out the occasions people don't get out of the RIGHT lane, like when you have someone pulled over or for tow trucks or anyone with their hazard lights on?! And would you care to address another huge problem of people actually passing each other or letting anyone in front of them? Go ahead. Get in an unmarked car and just try to pass about HALF the idiots out there RIGHT NOW! I bet you dollars to doughnuts they speed up once they realize they're about to get passed. I'm pretty sure there's a law against this too! (Don't even get me started on the fools who linger in the blind spots of other vehicles -- seems like an epidemic on that one.)
@TommTooTone2 жыл бұрын
If the passing lane must obey speed limits then going the speed limit in the left lane isn't technically "driving too slow" right? I always assumed that if left turns are available then so is normal driving in the left lane. People are showing me a government link that flat out says that this law applies to ALL roads, it's a very mixed search result I'm getting.

Now what if there are too many cars on the road and both lanes need to be full to hold them all? I mean, suppose no one wanted to pass, then the right lane would be 5 mph bumper to bumper and the left lane could be empty!

So what you're saying is that it's a larger offence riding in the left lane & doing the posted speed limit than it is to be cruising in an open left lane, & exceeding the speed limit. The guy doing the speed limit gets more heat than those people using the left lane to speed. I generally stay in the right lane but if the right lane is littered with pot holes & roughly patched cracks, holes, etc...., I'll be in the smoother of the lanes not caring what traffic is behind me. I won't beat up my vehical for anyone, especially if I'm towing my travel trailer. I find most people don't care about how bumpy the road surface is & how bad it can be on they're vehical. I care more about how I treat my truck than I do, the feelings of the guy behind me.I've never had a time when the guy behind me wasn't able to pass me on the right.

Well, it’s really speed variation that causes accidents. If all slows were out of the way, the faster people would be passing and slows on the right. It’s when a slow is in the left lane and a faster driver passes on the right side fast and has to swerve around slow drivers in all different lanes.

This is why speed limits on highways especially away from the urban core areas are way too low. Here in NY it's 65 (some places it's 55mph)..Many times I have to push it to 75-80mph to pass (limit 65). That would be considered speeding.. If I was going 70-75...i would be driving along side the vehicle in the right. So yeah to pass sometimes you need to speed.
@goaliedude325 жыл бұрын
You never need to speed. You choose to speed. If traffic in the right lanes are going 70-75 and you need to go 80 to pass, you're already breaking the law, drive traffic speed in the right lanes.

The real problem is we are not enforcing it in the big cities where it's needed the most. And I disagree that the "speeding" is what causes the deaths. The speeding PLUS not having a dedicated lane to do it in is what causes the crashes. That's why the autobahn exists and has less deaths than your highways, despite not having a speed limit. Enforce the left lane laws in cities with multi-lane highways and the traffic will go down, as will fatal and non fatal accidents. I'm from Houston, home to the widest freeway in the US, and you literally can go any speed you want in any of the 4-6 lanes available. Its fucking ridiculous at normal highway speeds.

Weaving within the lane, same thing. Driving 10-15mph below the speed limit on all streets & roads, same thing. You go around them, and you're speeding.
