Cool ashtray! Moody's motel is about a half and hour from my house. Opened in 1929. Moody's Diner is next to the motel. Yummy food. If you come to Maine be sure and stop at Moody's! You should look into the history of Moody's. I think you would enjoy it.
@miafarrin79194 жыл бұрын
Yay Moody’s, now more famous for it’s diner, than for its motel, but a landmark spot around here and a popular summer destination for summer people and tourists alike, but us locals enjoy it as well. I’m only about 15 minutes from there, would love to meet you for coffee and pie if you make it up to these here parts, Kristy M. can come as well! They have good pie! It’s a family run business with a great history, with published cookbooks and other info out there about this place. Love to you, always love your intro, your research on things, and of course, your great finds. Take care and Happy New Year!!

Goodwill has become a marketing genius. They maybe a non-profit, but the public still does not have an understanding of that term. Simple, it is corporate capitalism. Just like all corporations the money goes to the top salaries, middle management, and Bonuses! Period, now you have the story. Also, they operate independently as regional groups. All the hype around, “we do good things” is targeted effective marketing. Works!
@PaperandMoose4 жыл бұрын
I'm aware of how much money Goodwill and other non-profit organization pockets for themselves. I rounded up my bill by 75cents because I appreciated the time that the cashier took to talk to me and the care that he took in wrapping each of my items. Doubtful he will see that extra money down the line, but maybe someone that deserves it will.

This was my first video doing a voiceover, so I was winging it. With how loud the music was playing at this store, it's just easier to cover up the music this way. I do know for future voiceovers, I have to go through the items a bit slower so I don't have to talk as fast.

That is true you can only really find out the prices if you can get deep into their system, but they don't have something easy like eBay. On EBay you can look at the sold items and see what they sold for and that's the actual price you can get.

There aren't any Goodwill stores around our area. But with the other thrift stores, you can donate items and get discount coupons. I will stop on the side of the road when people put out their "free pick ups" and bring them to the charitiy stores to get the coupons. Is there a chance for coupons at that location? Do go often, you'll start to see items change and things coming in. They'll get to know what you are looking for. Keep an eye out for vintage sewing patters, prior to the 50's.
@PaperandMoose4 жыл бұрын
The promo at this Goodwill is for every $1 you spend, you receive 1 point. When you reach 150 points ($150), you receive a coupon for $5. Seems like the coupon should be worth a little more, or even a coupon for 50% off your whole purchase would be better.

That pair of Scottish figures is nice. That store was huge, as compared to the ones here. That's my take...whenever I go to my local store...all the sales people know me...and I always say..."What's Old, Today"! That's one thing I like about these days...the cessation of smoking in public places! Mickey looks like he had one too many! I sent Dee a pair of salt shakers...felines in Scottish attire...a male and female...she loved them.

Goodwill prices are outrages. Shop the color of the week or day is the only way to make more money. Plus I think it is the store manager at that store. Goodwill CEO is the highest paid compared to other thrift store companies.
@joycescott60664 жыл бұрын
Yes that's how I do it now . Trying to only do half off colors then 30% off Savers Tuesdays and 20% off Goodwill Wednesday's and Sundays at Goodwill the color of the week is $ 2 bucks for clothes shoes and purses so you tend to discriminate a little more and pick only the best stuff . . . To be honest, Goodwill, Salvation Army, and other well known thrift stores have most of their merchandise WAY overpriced. I won't shop any of those places anymore. I look for local, non-chain thrift shops, like churches and bazaars. At least I can find good items for no more than $3-$4. Goodwill & Salvation Army have me aggravated lately. They're supposed to help people who aren't fortunate enough to buy new. I literally saw a Walmart brand coat, with the original tag still on, priced $5 over the original price. I literally took the coat to every single person shopping in the store, and showed them. 4 people immediately left, leaving their carts in the aisles.

I call my local Good Will the Ill Will, for cause. They put ridiculous prices on some thing, including jewelry. I walked out of mine today with a Little League baseball for a friend - 50 cents. It was the only thing worth buying. Mostly they get Target overruns.

nettaP I collected Blue Willow pattern, too! That is so nice that you can remember your grandma when you look at the blue willow. I fell in love with blue willow as a teen digging thru the outdoor dump of a local writer for Pulitzer. He was long gone when I found the pieces of china and I saved it for someday when I would make either a table top or ? With the broken pieces. I owned a new set of willow and also used his sugar bowl! Later, I began collecting only porcelain blue willow. Haven’t a clue what happened to it. 😔 Perhaps I should start collecting again. I’ve never seen such a large blue willow mug!

Renee, Thanks for the videos. I find that with bigger thrift stores it does not matter what time you go. As you said they bring stuff out all day long. A good example of this is last Friday I left work and had some time to kill so popped into a thrift store about 30 minutes before closing time because I had a 50% off coupon.. I see a cart they just wheeled out so I start looking it over and found a few good items then see one great one. A huge red box with the Baccarat across the top. I check it to see if it is actually in the box which it was then I look at the price which was $49.99 so $24.99 to me out the door. It turned out to be a Baccarat 'Diva' Vase Small. These sell new for almost $2,000 and one sold on eBay auction which finished Sunday for $1,088. I one I got looks new...the previous owner never attached the felt pads to the bottom. The median income in the town I found this is 45K which is more then 25% lower then the average median income of the US. You never know what or where you will find a super flip. I love the hunt and tend to hold onto finds like this for a while since I get more joy from the thrill of the find when I look at them then from the money I would get from selling it. NJ
@PaperandMoose4 жыл бұрын
Your story is a perfect example of you just never know what is out there! I've been told by many to never go to a thrift store after a certain time, don't go on weekends, etc. Some stores do stick to a rigid schedule, but I'll say it again "You just never know." I also am like you with certain items - I might keep something a little bit, just so that I can enjoy it. If you are able to purchase an item at a very low price and the odds of finding one again are slim, why not enjoy it!
@sandym85944 жыл бұрын
I looked up your Scottish dancers on Worthpoint. They don’t sell all that often and they sell for $40 - $50 each or $70 - $100+ for the pair. Looks like they were made in different plaids. Wow, what a lot of items in that place. I don't know if the store has a suggestion price list for the items to be place out, but in the past when I helped with some charity sales I found that pricing was directly related the "well to do" of the person pricing. I do understand your explanation for the higher prices at that particular GW, but I read a very interesting article with an additional explanation. It seems that vloggers tipped off GW executives a few years back of all the profit they are making online as resellers. So GW decided to get into the business too and have done so brilliantly with their online sales and boutique shops and higher prices. I have heard many resellers say the way to go now for profit is just yard sales and rummage sales and trash picking. Do you see this trend?

As someone who is a thrift store junkie and occasional reseller, I would say that's probably true in general, but you can still find good deals in thrift stores. They don't have knowledge of every single item that goes into the stores. You have to look harder, but there's still money to make. I wish people would stop doing #goodwillfinds or whatever though on social media, because that's just highlighting valuable things the stores missed, and I can guarantee upper management looks at those tags.

I think it depends on the person & their area/what is available. Since I am more particular about what I pick to resell, sometimes I have little to no luck at yard sales. Rummage sales are extremely competitive in my area and as I work a full time job during the week, I miss out on many sales that are held only on Fridays. Trash picking has been awful for me as well lately. So I supplement where I can and sometimes that means going thrifting. Goodwill, thrift stores, etc. will price as they see fit, but I still think that items slip through and people can find low priced items to resell.

Kathy Fettkether Why would bloggers let them know?
@kathyfettkether36904 жыл бұрын
It was not intentional but GW was alerted by some customers of bloggers that thrifted in their stores for reselling purposes. GW started watching the videos and learned how to do it themselves.

Kathy Fettkether Oh I get it, just started watching a new pair of resellers from NY state that have said they've heard of people getting banned for filming.

Yes, thrift shops get wares and cloth to the floor all day long. It's also not cleaned or mended. Just slap a tag on it, hang it, put it on the cart and take them to the sales floor.
