Don't feel that a painting without cells is a failure or a waste of paint, think of it as a base layer for another attempt at a pour or even as a background for an acrylic painting, a landscape or a floral, or abstract, etc. I have repainted over many canvases that did not come out as I had hoped but then became good paintings because I repurposed them

I was going to agree with others, but decided to make this more prominent. You do a fantastic job in explaining WHY to do things! I really appreciate that! You explain what will happen if you do x, y, or z. As an engineer, I love how you experiment and break down what you’ve learned!!! I have watched hundreds of videos over the last three months, and I have enjoyed them, but I have learned MORE from your videos than anyone else’s videos. Your videos about how the thickness of paint affects the final outcome…how the amount of paint per layer affects the outcome…the opacity of the paint and how to layer them so the translucent paint is not muddied…the amount of paint to use by area…and this video on how to get the cells you want using silicone….I could go on and on! I have to admit, I am still trying to learn the blowdryer technique! I have watched your video a few times, and it has really helped me understand what angles will do what to the paint!!! My issue there is STILL viscosity! But I will get there. 🙃 You are a natural born teacher, my friend! I am SO glad KZbin directed me to your channel!!! I sincerely thank you!!!

And so on 💡💡those little observations and descriptions are very helpful b

Hello David. Thanks for tutorial! I’ve found that by adding maybe 1/2oz of titanium white if doing say an 8oz (flip cup) pour, helps a lot w/ cell Structure. I believe it is, as you know, due to the fact that titanium White is a heavier paint. So even if you’re thinking well I wasn’t going to include white in the painting that small amount doesn’t overpower the painting but it does help with cells.
@LeftBrainedArtist
@LeftBrainedArtist 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I'll have to try that. Most of the lighter colors had white here. It was just a bit too thick and I didn't take in to account the summer heat even though I have air conditioning.
@wholewellnesswithann
@wholewellnesswithann 3 жыл бұрын
Just read this comment after leaving my comment above about not wanting to torch if I don’t have to...and I realized even though I have prepped and painted my canvas prior to pouring, I haven’t left it wet (poured titanium white)...and I think I am going to try that first next time, to see if that helps create more cells. Thanks!
@bigtimetorifan
@bigtimetorifan 3 жыл бұрын
@@wholewellnesswithann Hi. Well I don’t actually usually do anything to prep or paint my canvas prior to pouring. What I was referring to was if you’re doing a flip cup or a dirty pour to add in a few layers of titanium white maybe a half an ounce total. The titanium white falls down through the other colors creating cells and lacing too!
@wholewellnesswithann
@wholewellnesswithann 3 жыл бұрын
@@bigtimetorifan Oh! Great tip too - do you then just add the titanium white to the layers in the dirty pour cup? I’m excited to experiment!
@bigtimetorifan
@bigtimetorifan 3 жыл бұрын
@@wholewellnesswithann Yes that is what I typically do. And I’m not talking about as much paint of the other colors that you’ve chosen I’m talking about a half oz total in an 8oz pour. Maybe spilt that 1/2 oz in 2. So put 1st 2 colors in, then 1/4oz titanium, another color or two, then the other 1/4oz. And that’s it. I’d say three out of four of my flip cups yielded happy results. And so maybe if you added that along with the recommendations David is giving, you will have double success!

WONDERFUL explanation of silicone oil! This is a huge help because my paints are also thick. I just did my "first" pour and I obviously didn't get the silicone right. They still turned out beautiful, but my paint was still too thick because it wouldn't blow with a blowdryer. Honestly, this is harder than it looks. It's not just a matter of mixing paint with pouring medium until it's thin enough and then adding silicone. Still learning.

Thank you for explaining how the silicone works and about paint surface tension, I never knew. Your videos are so useful and informative. I'm new to art and struggling to get cells in my pours, but now I understand why (too thick or thin paint with little or too much silicone!!). 👍

I find you extremely helpful with acrylic pours and very relaxing, so I am watching all of your videos and am atarting a list, my next two questions are: 1)what are other reasons (if any) to use a torch? 2) Which is better a torch or a hair dryer?
@LeftBrainedArtist
@LeftBrainedArtist Жыл бұрын
Torches and heat guns are used to break the surface tension and allow cells to form easier. That is really the only reason to use heat on your pour. Using a torch and using a hair dryer are used for complete different things. The torch heats up the surface as I mentioned above. The blow dryer moves the paint around (I alwasy recommend using a blow drying on cold or warm and not hot).

I wish the cells were a bit bigger but I didn't account for the heat here so it dried up as I was tilting more than I wanted. Every painting you learn more, even years after starting.

This video is so informative, Thank you 🙏. In fact you are the only pouring artist on KZbin who takes the time to explain what you’re doing without hiding the most important information about AP. That’s why I always come to your channel or website when I want to learn something about acrylic pouring, because 90% of the other channels seek only self promotion. Thanks again for being honest and willing to share your knowledge with us 👏. On a side note, I experimented with Grumbacher acrylic paint yesterday and found out that no matter what consistency, no matter what color, no matter what you use as a PM, it won’t make cells period. Not even with silicone! I guess Grumbacher is the way to go if you don’t want cells. Also, I had no problems with muddy colors, which is great. One awesome thing about it is that just a little paint goes a very long way. Have you ever experienced something like that? Sara.
