Seriously, people need to lay off gen alpha, they are LITERALLY children. Especially when the things they’re up to ( online ) are a direct effect of gen z’s internet presence, I don’t think people get that the content that gen alpha are currently consuming is quite literally created by gen z ( and maybe some millennials? ). I mean the oldest of gen alpha are what twelve-thirteen? I don’t think that they are the ones making the content they are consuming, and at the very least not the majority of it. And when it comes to, schooling, education, parenting and general bad behaviour, I think almost all of that can be linked back to capitalism imo. What they are growing up in definitely isn’t great, but it isn’t, and never will be, their fault. And that is a hill I will die on. Plus people have to remember that the younger generations are always ( generally ) more progressive than previous ones, in a couple years it’ll be time to look back and learn from them, same way previous generations are doing with us right now. Anyways, stop trashing the kids, they’re still learning and growing as people. And I think that something that people forget far too often.

TW: discussions of homophobia, religion, s3xual harassment/@ssault, mental illness, su*cide so, i am currently faced with a massive dilemma, and it's honestly eating me up inside. i have been close friends with a person now for about a year and a half; we bonded incredibly quickly thanks to our shared interests and compatible personalities. he really is my best friend- he's been there for me at my lowest moments, spending hours on calls with me when my mental illness threatened to drag me down, and he's such a lovely and sweet person who i really enjoy spending time with. it's not an exaggeration to say that he saved my life. i know that not only is he my best friend, but i am also his. up until recently, the only thing we ever seemed to disagree on was religion- he's Christian, I'm not, and we left it at that. but... recently i found out that he's homophobic. i'm a lesbian, and i told him as such about a week after i met him; we hit it off so well that i trusted him with that information much sooner than i usually do upon meeting people. and he always seemed accepting, laughing at or participating in my gay jokes and such, and he was the first person i truly let my guard down around in regards to my queerness. but then a few weeks ago he told me that he wasn't pro-LGBTQ+ because he believed it was a sin. this was obviously shocking to me. he's anti-racist, a feminist, pro-palestine- it's literally just homophobia, too, he's not transphobic. i feel like if it was any of the other things, i would have ended our friendship right there, but i guess because i'm gay and have dealt with internalized homophobia throughout my life, i understand it with a bit more nuance. we talked about it for a very long time, and he confessed that he experiences attraction to men, but actively chooses not to act on it because of his faith. this breaks my heart- like me, he has low self-esteem and i can't help but feel like that is a contributing factor. he is in a heterosexual relationship (married, actually), and also experiences attraction to women, and he uses that as justification that being gay is a choice. i tried to explain to him that for me, it isn't, because i don't experience any attraction to men, and i told him about the trauma that i've endured thanks to my romantic orientation, how i was s3xually harassed and physically @ssaulted, and escaped attempted SA, so why on earth would I choose to be a lesbian when it has caused me nothing but pain, but he just told me that i was asking him to compromise his faith, and he couldn't do that. we left it at that, but i really was hurt by it, and i don't know what to do. I'm afraid to open up the dialogue again- it's something that's very difficult for me to talk about, especially regarding religion since the abuse i experienced when I was younger was in the name of Christianity and Islam. i don't want to hurt him in kind because i don't think he really realized how badly it affected me, but i feel like i can't keep going on like this. anybody have any advice? it would be much appreciated. TL;DR: I just found out my best friend is homophobic. I'm gay, and he knows this. Gahhhhhh help

I know that you probably don’t want to, but if you have tried to explain so many times but it hasn’t worked, then you might want to cut ties or just talk with him less. Some people are just too far gone to be helped so easily. I basically had the same situation happen with one of my friends not liking neurodivergent people. (And he also wanted me to act less gay/trans or something??) We stopped talking in the end. It hurt, but I feel like it was the better choice. You might want to consider that here. But really, trust your instincts! We’re here for you. 🧡

That’s really tough I’m sorry you have to deal with that. What I’d recommend is to try and figure out exactly which aspects of homosexuality he disagrees with. Is it purely because it’s in the bible? Is it because he thinks is unnatural ( in which case I’d point him in the direction of the 1,500 reported species that have been found to have gay relations. Eg, lots of different birds, lions, orcas, penguins etc etc etc. ) My view point with some aspects of gayness and religion is that, without the bible, Quran etc. they wouldn’t be able to tell you why being gay is actually bad in any way. Unlike other things like murder, violence etc that blatantly hurt people. They might jump to being unnatural, or the fact that they can’t reproduce, which I’d respond to with the animals again and the fact that a lot of cis men and women and people with a DSD are born unable to reproduce. Why would their god do that if it were unnatural? If you think you might know what aspects he deems bad I’d try and write it down somewhere maybe a word doc? You could even script roughly what points you want to make when you talk to him, just so you can get your thoughts out with him. And most importantly tell him why you’re hurt in the first place, tell him what this all means to you, and tell him what he means to you. If your conversation doesn’t go over all that well, it’ll be difficult, but I promise you will find other people who will be there for you the same way he did. People that will care about all aspects of you, and not just the parts they chose to focus in on. I hope it goes well for you!

My two cents is that some people can never see eye to eye with you on certain things to to how they were raised and how that shaped their core beliefs. On the other hand, friends don't need to agree with everything you do, they are their own person and it sucks that they don't understand your sexual identity as a lesbian, however considering that you said he agrees with literally everything else you talk to him about and he has known from the start, you shouldn't ruin it all for one thing you guys don't agree on. I don't agree with my friends about a lot of stuff but wee talked about agreed to disagree, and moved on to talking about other stuff and never touched back on it. I can't imagine talking about sexuality to be a common topic in discussion so in your position I would agree to disagree and move on focus on the vast majority of good this man provides for you in your life.
