Wow, I never thought about how much history is behind animation. This series is going great so far!

Sooo, this movie is based on Leskov’s short novel. We’ve spent freakin’ hours analyzing it in school, so that’s what I got You were quite right saying that the main idea is “we are cool or even the coolest, but we kinda suck at keeping our geniuses alive, sowwy”. Leskov spent his entire life criticizing Russians emperors’ behavior and negligence of serfs & that’s what it is So the last part of the movie is about serfs being more loyal to their country than the aristocracy and military Also it criticizes etaism, servility and other things coming from “range” division in Russian imperial society Aaaand this movie had a green light in USSR because it shows “good worker” = proletarian and “bad royal” = bourgeois (I don’t think I explained it well but still Also I love your videos

Anybody else had that weird mix of amusement and confusion at the triple horse carts animation? They looked so confused. As for the manipulated flea: They did not just put horseshoes on it that are finer than the british art. They also managed to make it dance a russian type of dance! Basically teaching it something entirely different.

While I'm not Russian, I assume you hit the nail on the head towards the end of the video with the conclusion that this film was to make fun of tsars rather than contemporary Russian government in 1964. The last tsar was ousted by the communist revolution that created the Soviet Union and soviet attitudes towards the complete monarchy of a tsar remained negative throughout the USSR's lifespan, from what I understand. Mocking and critique of tsar rule would not be unusual!

As a russian, I concur, that is *exactly* what the soviet government thought the people were seeing. "Big bad tsars, being greedy and corrupt and abusing their own people! No, that doesn't sound like ANY socialist government I know, why?" So yeah, basically some animators could sneak in (sometimes unintentionally even) some pretty harsh social and political commentary under the guise of 'big bad tsars' or 'big bad capitalists'

i second that

It was said listening your commentaries. I saw this movie with subtitles and it made absolutely a lot of sense to me. Sad you lot don’t understand the historical and esoteric meanings of the characters and how it explains where we are today geopolitically in society.

You guys seem really devoted to this series. Do you enjoy watching all of these movies?
@TennelleFlowers6 жыл бұрын
Yeah! I mean, we don't always enjoy the movie itself (there's some real stinkers coming up! XP lol) but we enjoy learning more about animation history and seeing where we've come from. And it keeps us seeing new things that we would have never checked out without doing this series! It's pretty cool.

If I could make a suggestion, there are Soviet animated shorts that were made in the mid to late 60s that have English subtitles. To name a few shorts, there are Vinni Pukh (Winnie the Pooh, the infamous soviet version), Nu Pogodi (Well, Just you wait), Cheburashka, Malysh I Karlson (Karlson who lives on the Roof), Bremenskie Muzikanty (The Musicians of Bremen), Maugli (Maugli, a Soviet adaptation of the Jungle Book), Pesenka Myshonka (The Little Song by the Little Mouse) and Veselaya Karusel (the merry carousel, which is an anthology of upcoming Russian animators), If you guys are willing to do them, I could maybe send links.

Agreed, the shorts of this era are beloved classics in Russian culture and are household names even today. Regular people (they're not even animation geeks!) STILL quote memorable lines from these shorts in their daily lives and they have definitely had more impact than the features of this time. Heck, my old Russian granny knows these films by heart and I had a lovely conversation with Andreas Deja about how Maugli was super inspiring to him, especially when it came to drawing felines! Treat yourselves :)

I'm pretty sure that Maugli is a full-length movie Also, why is Winnie the Pooh "infamous"? It's really different from Disney's version, but there's nothing really wrong with it

by Infamous, I meant well known for some bad quality. I do enjoy the Soviet Winnie the Pooh

Definitely a confusing plot! But hey, it's worth it for the animation! You should check out "The Bath" (an animated Russian movie from 1962). If nothing else, it will be fun to hear your reactions to it...It's free to watch on KZbin, last I checked...

The weirdness of this film is by the misunderstanding the history of Russian Empire (1721-1917). The emperors dynasty and nobility is not mainly Russians ethnically. They were mainly Germans. The emperors is officially are Holstein-Gottorp. And thus is shown social chain of slavery the native folk to the foreign rulers. In Crimean War (1853-1856) backward Russians smooth-bore guns were totally fail to the British rifles. And at the and of the story is shown that the life of native Russian slave or serve is worth nothing for the foreign rulers, even for great specialist like Lefty.

Dear authors of a review, I must tell you that you have made a decent job on reviewing this cartoon, though for better understanding this work of animation and the russian society in general you need to know this saying: in Russia there are the power of darkness below and the darkness of power above. History's show this tendency being kept regardless of a political system of government here. Thank you!
