Awesome to listen to you Manie. I was a lightie in Simonstown. My Dad was in the navy with your old man. Spoke highly of him and you were a lekker stout gat. But you always had time for us lighties. Respect Oom. Very cool to hear your story

Thanx Manie. Really enjoyed this conversation. The more I hear of the Air force guys the more I am convinced that they were the biggest "stoutgatte" in the force.

Hello Vossie & Manie, did you perhaps got to know Theo Kriel? He joined 1975 and became a flight engineer on Alo's, left the force early '80's due to excessive stress and suffered PTSD until his untimely death approx 3 years ago. Theo was my wife's cousin.

I knew a Danny Lan during basics at STT in 1978, we shared the same room. He was very proud of his Jewish heritage. Lost track of him. I wonder if it is the same guy mentioned. I also met Mike Earp on the first tech block,got to know him a bit. Saw him when arriving for Protea in 1981, he was waiting to return to SA after a tour as a Puma pilot. We had a chat, very sad to read about him being shot down in January 1982. I was a Puma fitter. 19B.

Hi Russell... yes, the same Danny Lan - there was only one! He was based at 16 Sqn Port Elizabeth at the time of his passing - a fellow squadron member of all who served at 16! Feel free to come and chat with us - we are looking for techs to come and relate their stories too!

I have just read a book about the Portuguese colonial war in Angola. In it several ex-combatants tell their stories of that war. One in particular mentions with great respect how our “cousins “ from the south helped them with their unmarked Alouette III choppers. This time is around the mid-sixties. Interesting! Anyone know anything?

They were known to make a racket... pusher props... converting fuel to noise!

The Bosbok was very noisy. The Albertros was a pusher twin engined (mostly) maritime patrol plane. I dont think it was ever used on or near the border.
