When I worked for John Martz occasionally he would get in a Walther PPK that had broken grips. I made the stocks and grips so I would make the grips out of fine grained European walnut. I used the grip screw and escutchens from the broken plastic grips and hand carved the Walther banner and checkered the grips. It was time consuming and expensive back in the 1970s but they always came out great. The way I kept the grips from warping and cracking was by using epoxy and pressure impregnating it into the wood when the grip was 90% finished. I also did this treatment to the magazine bottoms for the early Luger pistols from around the 1900s and in through the World War I era. Cracking and breaking was the reason why 1911 grips went to plastic, Luger grips went to plastic, Luger magazine bottoms went to plastic and Walther grips went to plastic also. Thanks Tom for the lesson tonight.

I fully agree. I'm surprised he thought it was a 34, when it's very obviously a MG42.

Like kids at Christmas. Those GIs were having a hell of a good time. Only hope it balances out all the ugly things they had to see and deal with while fighting for our lives. My parents and I were born in the Netherlands so I mean that in the literal sense. If not for them, there'd be no me.

When you heat those grips to lessen the gap, it you would place something (like a small block of wood) between the rubber band and grip while heating, it might press the grip a little tighter to the frame.

Tom there are several pictures of German soldiers during the Battle of the Bulge who are carrying StG44 Assault Rifles. In one of the pictures the German looks like a tough battle hardened dude! Anyhow Tom great channel and I always look forward to the next video!

If you don't mind me asking what do you do with the grips you replace?... The set with the crack? I've been practicing a repair technique where I dye epoxy and re checker the grips. I'm not trying to deceive anyone just making it disappear on a rack.

Might the grips not seat flatter if after heating a wood clamp, perhaps padded with leather, was attached and left overnight?

The long rifle could be a "transitional" model Kar98b. The Karabiner 98k was derived from the variant of the Gewehr 98 designated the Kar 98b. Introduced in 1923, these "carbines" had the 29 inch barrel of the Gew 98, a tangent rear sight, and a turned down bolt handle. The rifles were designated a carbine to comply with the Treaty of Versailles. It only allowed the production of carbines, not rifles.

What's so extra with SS weapons, why are they so popular with the killer gang
@weirdcrunkygremlin1449

I guess it's because after the war, all crimes were count to the SS. So nobody wanted to be in touch with the SS in any form. Most people in germany dumped their Nazi stuff to avoid consequences, at first everything with SS on it. You can buy a "Reichsbahn", Trainservice hat in leather with full Eagle swastika Insignia for 50$, almost the same hat from a SS Officer is worth about 3000$, only because one killed somebody and the other not. I am german. Cheers

We definitely get these in from time-to-time. We typically call them "shooter" grade examples, as they often have some honest use-wear from the war and beyond. Keep checking the website or feel free to email us with your request! Thanks for watching!
