I'm so glad you have said this - I worked in government and the shift from one admin to the next can be overwhelming - and that is in essentially normative times. One need look no further in Trump's DOJ than Jeffrey Clark as head of the Environmental Division before aspiring to the AGs position itself. DOJ had to have been decimated by attrition during Sessions and Barr and terrible appointments/hires during their tenures. I really feel for Garland and wonder if the story of the DOJ, FBI and Secret Service in the time of Trump and following will ever really be known.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I believe the doj was in such shambles, it was a monumental effort to even weed out all the mess while simultaneously making sure the Jan 6 folks etc. it was just impossible for a man who came into a huge department and try to handle everything at once. Although it appears he was slow to get things going, I believe he is a honest man and like to go by the law which is always slower than we desire❤. I feel for him

I have said numerous times that Garland realized that it was far bigger than the scope of Trump's crimes, and perhaps reached international boundaries that he appointed Jack Smith since Smith has had experience in war crimes, and would know how to follow the $$$$$. Garland did the right thing and hired someone who had more experience. Jack Smith is very determined to get the job done no matter what. For those who think ill of Garland; walk a mile in his shoes.

With regards to age, my mother who was very active, cognitively sound died of a blood clot at the age of 77. Her best friend who was 81 at the time of her death continued to live to 96 - also sharp and active until the end. The age number does not matter.

Thanks so much, Maryann. I have so long felt AG Garland was working behind the scenes in ways that are, of necessity, completely unknown, but unfairly distrusted. It is not his job to share the content of his investigations while they are in process (exactly the opposite, in fact). Yet it has been a time of nearly unbearable frustration for so many of us with what feels like delayed accountability. Maryann, did you see AG Merrick Garland at the State of the Union Address this year? I was awestruck by the fact he was standing there while everybody was greeting each other waiting for the President to arrive, and as far as was able to see, NO ONE said hello to him. He was alone, isolated from the rest, trying to appear as if he was in a group but in fact he was outside. No one greeted him. I found this so interesting and shocking. You well described the situation, but OMG, it has moving parts, and we can't keep focus on more than one thing at a time. I lived in Texas when the legislature cut education funding by a third. We ignore that George W instituted the policy that made standard testing supreme, and teachers had to 'teach to the test,' instead of encouraging critical thinking. We now have generations of these students who know nothing of the world around them. We should revisit the prophetic satire "Idiocracy."

The J6 committee was formed for one large purpose: Any and all investigations by the FBI and DOJ would take time and be out of public view. The Committee needed to make apparent to the PUBLIC how bad and widespread was the plan to cause J6. They were looking for impeachment evidence and to try to hold a light to those who follow DT in darkness.

They did release information. The amount of evidence was overwhelming. Don't forget, Garland took down and successfully prosecuted Timothy McVeigh (Oklahoma City bomber). That was a long and detailed investigation ending with the removal of Tim from the planet. If you wish to prosecute without all the evidence, you get a case dismissed and can't go back. Everything must be done with great detail, rooting out the lower-level supports if you want to be successful when prosecuting "the boss." Even though everyone knows who and what Capote was, he could only be successfully prosecuted under tax law. But you take bad guys off the street with whatever you can fully prove.

Committee formed July 1, 2021... Garland's appointment had initially been blocked by republicants; it had to have been common knowledge on Capital Hill that the DOJ had been infected/infested by trump people... it had to be Congress to get this ball rolling.
