Just to add to the Panama-USA history: the reason the Panama Canal was handed over to Panama began with an incident on January 9th, 1964. There was a law that stated that both American and Panamanian flags had to be raised together in the Canal Zone. The US did not comply, so high school students tried to enforce this law and raise the Panamanian flag. American forces prevented this by opening fire and murdering unarmed students and civilians. This triggered the events that lead to the Torrijos-Carter treaty and eventually Panama having control of the Canal. This was NOT a gift from the US; it was the result of US needlessly spilling innocent blood on Panamanian soil.

Greetings from Panama, thank you for reporting the canal situation objectively. During the past months, as a country we have had to endure lies and threats from the Trump administration, to complement what you well explained in the video, here are some objective truths: 1. The US investment to build the canal was repaid in the 75 years of American control over the canal. During that time the United States government benefited and obtained direct income from the canal operation, which allowed it to recover the money spent on its construction in 1903. 2. When the canal was handed over to the Panamanian government in 1999, it was already obsolete by then. The old locks did not allow modern ships to pass, so, with our own money, we financed the construction of a second canal, wider than the one that was given to us. 3. There’s no Chinese government presence in the Canal Zone, the operation and navigation of ships through the canal is done by Panamanian administrators and captains. The concern of president’s Trump, however is that there are two ports, not even in the Canal Zone, operated by Hutchinson Ports, a Hong Kong based company. It is important to highlight that the same company also manages ports in the United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium and many other European countries that are part of NATO, but he doesn’t seem to care about them, just the small countries he can bully as the chief of a Global power. We love the American people, we see them as our allies and partners. It is refreshing to see that there are people who do not believe the first thing they hear, who research and contrast information to reach the truth. We hope to continue contributing to the relationship of friendship that we have always had with the United States, always from mutual respect as sovereign countries.

it continues to baffle me how americans, when discussing the potential sale of greenland, fail to even acknowledge what it means when the danish prime minister says that greenland is not for sale. Mette Frederiksen is not simply saying "the danish government doesnt want to sell greenland". She is saying "The danish government has made a deal with the people of greenland that only people of greenland can decide the future of greenland and for this reason, even if the danish government wanted to sell greenland they could not, for the same reason that the danish government cannot sell france or the united states". Greenland is a nation and country of its own. It used to be a danish colony but those days are over and greenland is in a process of gaining independence. If trump wants buy greenland he needs to buy greenland from greenland not denmark.

Hi, from a Canadian, Trudeau is technically the current Canadian Prime Minister, not the former one, at least till March. Also thank you for covering the "Annex Canada" thing. I know it may seem silly and absurd from an American perspective but it's genuinely something we are taking more seriously up here as a threat. Moves of war, annexation, and colonization have happened throughout the globe over the entire span of human history, obviously including the stolen land I currently live on, and in many of those cases, it seemed pretty "absurd" or unlikely until the shit hit the fan and it was too late. It was in only our grandparents' lifetime that Germany invaded France. It was within our lifetimes' that Russia invaded Ukraine. As Canada, Panama, and Greenland, we have to keep in mind that we are not exempt

I recall sometime in ancient history that there was a situation like that, a group of contries technically at war with each other, all using mercenary companies for thier armies, and the mercs were like, na shooting at each other is dangerous, we like living so they just didn't fight. Can't remember which countries were involved exactly or the years. Never been good with the finer details of history.
@Carlos-wx2tc
@Carlos-wx2tc Күн бұрын
@@Krahazik Something very similar happened in Renaissance Italy, particularly during the 14th and 15th centuries, when city-states like Florence, Venice, Milan, and the Papal States relied heavily on mercenary armies known as Condottieri. The Condottieri and the "Phony Wars" Condottieri (mercenary captains) were professional soldiers hired by competing city-states. Since these mercenaries fought for money, not loyalty or patriotism, they often avoided serious battles that could risk their lives or weaken their forces for future contracts. Instead of large-scale deadly battles, they preferred maneuvering, capturing strategic positions, and minor skirmishes. In some cases, both sides' mercenary forces deliberately avoided fighting, since they knew they'd all be hired by different city-states again in the future. Famous Example: The Battle of Zagonara (1421) The Florentine army (led by mercenaries) fought against the Duke of Milan’s forces. Instead of a bloody battle, many mercenaries on both sides surrendered immediately rather than risk serious casualties. Only one soldier was killed in the entire battle, despite the large number of troops involved. Niccolò Machiavelli’s Criticism Machiavelli (The Prince, 1513) hated the Condottieri system because it made wars in Italy too indecisive. He argued that mercenaries were unreliable, disloyal, and only in it for money, leading to weak states that couldn't defend themselves properly. Bottom Line There was never a full war where all sides completely refused to fight, but there were many instances where mercenaries deliberately avoided deadly combat. The Condottieri wars in Renaissance Italy are the best example of a time when soldiers essentially said, "Why fight to the death? Let's just pretend."
@CosmicOdeum

@@Krahazik Sounds like maybe medieval Italy? Every city was independent and relied on the same mercenaries. The Condottieri were stateless mercenaries who were as likely to "resolve" a fight by taking bribes as they were to actually fight, sometimes more so.

Politicians here have done a great job decreasing literacy and cultivating a very loyal, cult-like voter base. @@FactHeretic not immunity from prosecution though. That's a recent development. If it wasn't Nixon would've never left office: he already won his second term and if the law was the way it was today he would've stayed in office. He definitely should have the authority to do his job, but not be above the law which is what he has become. He's a king in all but name which is what Thomas Jefferson feared the most from Washington. But Washington literally gave up the presidency after 2 terms, despite knowing he could've served for life. Do you ever see this guy following that lead? Willingly giving up power? There was a Roman named Cincinnatus once who was chosen to be dictator during war, which happened in ancient Rome. When the war was over, he gave it up and went back to being a farmer. Even he, the dictator of Rome, didn't believe he was above the law and so he followed it and gave up his powers. I just don't see the same thing happening here. TBH I am very confident this guy will try and figure out how to run for a third term. Or he'll pull a Putin and just switch back and forth between positions. So yes he should have the authority to ENFORCE LAWS, not break them. Otherwise where is the morality of the job? If the president can do literally anything and not be punished, what's to stop them from literally doing anything and everything? Scary to me. Idk maybe not to you.

"Canada has a very strong army." As a 30-year veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces, I majorly disagree with that. Those of us who served were excellent troops. With no government support. Old equipment. Chronic recruitment numbers. Food banks on bases. We were proud. But unloved.

My guess is that Trump administration might have read about the annual costs related to the training of the US troops by Canada's military forces and facilities and makes it sounds like the Canadian military force might be quite mighty, but the papers fails to explain that the strength of the Canadian military comes from its ability to adapts first, then conquer. Canada is the only country in the world where you can experience 90% of every climates existing on the world within a 2 hours plane flight with enough wild/raw lands to simulate the worse kind of environments. (Rain forest wildlife and desert climates are the only climates that doesn't appear in Canada which is why Canada does send force to the US in its exchange mil program to train its force in those which exists in the south of the US) Canada military is kinda of a joke when you consider its equipment, but it's a fearsome power when you consider what it can do with what it has. My brother who has been in the Canadian military as a full time infantry reservist for >20 years (he became a veteran 2 years ago) has been part of the training exchanged with the US and the US military sees Canadian forces as "the guys you never want to cross against in a naked fight, ever!"

The U.S. did not lose 38,000 lives building the Panama Canal, that's total BS. But the total number of deaths from both the French and American efforts combined is estimated to be around 25,000 to 28,000. Here's a breakdown: French Construction Effort (1881-1889) The French attempt under Ferdinand de Lesseps faced massive casualties, mostly due to yellow fever, malaria, and accidents. Estimated deaths: 22,000 American Construction Effort (1904-1914) When the U.S. took over in 1904, they implemented major sanitation efforts (led by Dr. William Gorgas) to combat yellow fever and malaria. Estimated deaths: 5,600 (mostly from disease and accidents, but far lower than during the French effort).

I am Danish, I took Greenland studies at university. The independence movement in Greenland is very pragmatic. Hence why they have not done so. Of course they have no interest in joining America. 😅 Let me say it like this. America is not very good at taking care of its people, nor its infrastructure. While Denmark on the other hand, provided the means to create the first coloured newspaper in the world. The Greenlandic people were the first population in the world where a majority was able to read and write. The first place with mass internet adoption. The first place that had satellite phone communication for civilian use. What is America doing for each state in terms of healthcare, education, and infrastructure? Letting the states pay. Can Greenland pay? No. So why join? They do not gain anything compared to cooperation and Danish support.

@BrycePogue 2 күн бұрын
Many of the points here are absurd. America has one of the strongest middle classes in the world. On top of that, who cares about the first coloured newspaper!? Is that the only claim to fame? Also the first paper in colour was in London in 1855, not the 1861 paper in Greenland. Greenland has one of the tiniest populations on earth, so claiming they were the first to have majority read/write is like comparing a small town in Wyoming to a massive country with tens or hundreds of millions of people. The difference is massive, they had maybe what, 20k people total on the continent back then? Bah. Same problem with internet, not to mention its very expensive to setup internet in Greenland. As for satellite phone communication, the fact it was needed in Greenland is a testament to how remote the island is, and how lacking in infrastructure for alternatives were available that satellite phones were needed that badly there. You then make the argument that Greenland doesn't have the money to take care of itself which is....true. Denmark mostly subsidizes the people in Greenland by the tune of half a billion dollars for a tiny population. To say that Greenland would gain nothing from joining America is equally absurd. Of course they would. America has far more resources to provide funding to Greenland than tiny Denmark, as part of federal funding. Also, it would increase tourism substantially, which would create more jobs for locals and more income. None of this answers the big question, 'should we' which is fairly the domain of the people of Greenland. But accusing America in terms of healthcare when we have had some of the best healthcare in the world is more absurdity. Education is a fair question since common core stinks, but its likely to get canceled soon anyways. As for infrastructure, we could do much better than Denmark could, the resources are all here to make construction and roads happen, among many other things.
@taiwanisacountry
@taiwanisacountry 2 күн бұрын
@BrycePogue "strongest middle classes" middle class? Are people around you able to buy a fine home in a city/suburb in a good city, living on a single income, and go on at least a week of vacation internationally every single year? Like the Simpsons. It is clear that the topic as presented by me, takes its offset in reality. Not possibility. If we just go with wishful thinking then we can just imagine that Denmark doubles or triples its support. 😒 So what does Denmark actually provide. As in right now. People in Greenland have access to universal healthcare. That won't be provided by America. :-) okay so that is a negative. The people of Greenland have access to any higher education they want, no matter their GPA, because there can't be a fair competition on grades when there is such a huge difference in the difficulty of finding qualified teachers between mainland Denmark and Greenland. That won't be supplied because higher education is not free in the USA. Currently the Trump government does not acknowledge systemic differences in opportunities, hence the attacks on DEI. Then we have policing and justice. Enough said. :-) Satellite communication is still popular in remote places in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, to this day. Because connecting islands is super expensive. We did connect to Greenland anyway. :-D I am but the Atuagagdliutit, did not just have some coloured pages, a majority of the prints were in colour. Got a problem with that claim, then take it up with my former professor at the University of copenhagen.

@@BloodyCrow__ not really, the U.S. is but one player, now that Trump has also exited the U.N. human rights as well that is going to shift the UN (free it from American influence) , hopefully get it out of U.S. soil and control (funding) so that Palestine can be born, and NATO might then be more than happy to welcome Russia and China, never underestimate a plucky Brit to begin with, Trump’s 500 billion dollar utopia in Gaza and it’s oil (the actual reason for ALLLLL this, 7’th of October till now, and Trump now not wanting to hear of genocide or anything else, hence exiting the U.N. And saying it’s badly run) will not see the light of day, not when China and Russia aren’t getting a piece of that. Essentially this might very much push all the world into a BRICS deal, finally ending the petrodollar and any sanctions that go with it, so no my American friend, this is terrible news for you first, this will unite the world against the U.S. and Israel, the LAST thing any American should want is a possible deal between the U.N. And BRICS, with America kicking itself out, tariffs are not gonna help either. Prepare for war

I do not understand why you want to take our territory of Greenland. Greenlanders are Danish citizens, and the island has been part of our Kingdom for 800 years. We are not going to sell or give away our land and our citizens. I hope many of you will fight against this. It is very sad that 80 years of being close friends and allies have been utterly destroyed in two weeks. I hope this will change, and that we can be friends again. 🇩🇰🇬🇱

Colonialism should have died centuries ago. We want to live in peace, and this is the exact opposite of that. Many of us will continue to protest both directly and indirectly on the US soil. Too much blood has been spilled to satisfy these insane power trips. Please forgive us, as many are tricked into following the cult. I and many others will not forget our sins as a country.

Imagine if Canada was, against their will, somehow dragged into the US. You've suddenly added ~30 million eligible voters to the US voting bloc who would require new congress seats, new Senators - probably at least 10, Canada is way too large to be one state, you'd have to break it up. Which then effects the electoral college as well. If it was the 51st state it would be the most populous by a couple million, which means it would get the largest number of electoral college votes. Even if you then broke it up into smaller states, that group of states would have more college votes between them than California. And does Trump think that these people are going to vote overwhelmingly for him and his cronies? These people won't even admit DC or Puerto Rico as states because they're likely to vote Democrat.
