Neither side can take the high ground on corruption. Both parties are corrupt. How else do they all become millionaires once they get into office. Even though they have little when they get elected. The party elite and the media keep all the minions in check with conflicting information, empty promises, and the old smoke and mirrors. People are treated like cattle and those that fail to think for themselves are too blind to see how they are manipulated.

I disagree, not with your ideals, but I disagree that you can accomplish an alleviation of corruption. I agree it is corrupt. Remember the term civil war has been thrown around a lot. If we restrict pardons further then it is likely to make people more bitter to each other. I agree they are used corruptly. But what would you have people do? At least one half wants to hang the other half. Do we want to live to see both halves want to hang each other? I am sorry people can't be trusted. Really honestly. What I think is that corrupt people will always find ways to be corrupt and the possibility that someone deserving of a pardon is denied one because corruption ruined a nice thing....scares me. I'm not talking about Trump's cronies. Picture three Presidents from now, 24 years. What if someone needs a pardon but the President no longer has the authority? Like the opposite of the situation with Trump? Possibilities like that keep me awake. I think it's valid to accuse corruption of holding the law hostage.

@@matthewferrantino9521 "the possibility of a pardon being denied because corruption ruined a nice thing" Slippery Slope is a logical fallacy Basically what you're saying is there can't be a middle ground, its either you're able to pardon everyone or pardon no-one, I think this is pretty disengious. Obviously you can have limits without being too strict, there's absolutely no reason it has to be one way or the other. I started looking up the definition of "disorderly conduct" which from what I've been able to gather is a crime that police get to pick and choose who, where, and when they get to use this "crime" and reading the definition got me brainstorming about how vague the language used is purposely worded that way so that police basically have a trump card to pull whenever they don't have an any other lawful authority to flex because there isnt any actual crime being committed. But depending on where the interaction takes place, there is always the crime of "disorderly conduct" to allow a cop to detain somebody. Could you do a video explaining the various ways this could be lawfully and "unlawfully"(typically enforced whenever it suits their convenience is what I mean when I say that) applied by police?

Real question here: why does the president even have the power to pardon people ? This looks like a remnant of feudal times, when the king could simply step in and mess with the justice system. Why has the "land of free" kept this ?

Governors also generally have pardon power within their own state for state crimes as well. It's generally seen as a way to allow for new administrations to clean up messes that the last administration might have done (such as release political prisoners), release people for crimes that are no longer crimes due to societal shifts (such as pardoning drug offenses as said drugs are made legal), to help the wrongly accused where courts and lawyers are unwilling/unable to help, or simply to extend mercy (considering incarceration is seen as punishment in the states, not rehabilitation). There are a lot of potential good uses for it. We just happen to be currently be seeing the peak of corruption in using it for ALL of the wrong reasons.
@iain3482

It's a useful power to have. Humans are fallible, the justice system makes mistakes, bad laws are sometimes enacted and also times change. For example, in 2017 the UK government recently pardoned all men who were convicted of being homosexual before the law was changed in 1967. In 2006 all soldiers from the UK and Ireland who were executed for cowardice in World War I were granted posthumous pardons. The problem is where there are no limits on, or where there is no oversight of, the power to grant pardons. It seems to me there should probably be some limits (cannot grant pardons to those connected to you, for example) and judicial oversight (i.e an application must be brought before a judge before the pardon is granted to check the power is not being abused). Maybe there should be limits on when the power can be used, too - like not exercising the power in the last days of your presidency.

A few examples: A POTUS can pardon violations of the Military Code as well as regular criminal trials. So if A soldier is ordered to do something heinously unethical (like some of the shit we got up to in Vietnam, for instance) and got court martialed when they refused, the sitting president can re-instate the soldier in question. Ditto someone like Snowden bringing to light abuses of government power somewhere. A pardon would be appropriate here. Another example would be to pardon those in prison for something that'd no longer illegal, such as possession of weed if that where to get legalized.

@@J29117 Again, it's because of the multiple crimes. A criminal case isn't fully resolved until the sentence has been served, and appeals can be made almost indefinitely. They do it that way to prevent major criminals from escaping punishment entirely on one single technicality. If they do it the way you suggest, a serial killer who murdered 894 people could get away scot-free because of a minor mixup in procedure for one small portion of one of those charges. And that's why they make sure to keep track of each crime and sentence individually, rather than collectively.

When the country was founded, I imagine that those founders never imagined someone who would so brazenly abuse his powers would be elected president. Those same founders likely would have expected congress to take the president to task for his abuses much sooner, but it chose instead to play politics. Ultimately, though, the deterioration of the United States is rooted in the voter voting for their personal agenda instead of what is right and just for the nation as a whole. If we were willing to make the sacrifices that integrity demanded of us, we would be electing officials who would do the same. The pardon power would not be a problem, and politicians could take an early stand against corruption knowing the people of the United States have their back. The United States is still a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. It can only be as good as we, as a people, make it.
