@NoriMori19927 ай бұрын
The thing I love about Elle is that her default mode is kindness and acceptance. She totally smashes that "rich bitch" stereotype. Even when she's being shallow and materialistic, she uses it to build you up instead of breaking you down. There are exceptions for people who get on her bad side, but you have to actually be _mean_ to get on her bad side, and even then she reserves her negative comments for gossiping out of earshot, where their feelings won't be hurt. (Well, except for that one time she called Vivian a "frigid bitch" to her face, but let's be real Vivian deserved that, and it was Elle's only truly catty moment.) If she's talking directly to you and she doesn't have something against you, she just radiates positivity. Even in this moment, where she's comparing her friend's bone structure negatively to Chutney's, she's saying it in a way that isn't unkind to her friend at all. She's not saying her friend was ugly, or that she had a bad bone structure in general, just that she didn't have the right look for curls.

i love Brooke's expression.. she had confidence in elle since day 1.. when elle introduced herself to her, she was like "finally!" and not in a shallow cali sorority girly bonding way like they're just gonna sip mojitos by the pool. she was CONFIDENT that Elle's gonna set her free. even at the beginning of the movie the delta nus at Elle's undergrad were very supportive of her endeavour and never tried to actually stop her from doing law. the most negative thing they said was that getting into harvard was difficult and they do not want their girl to suffer. all I'm saying is, there's a great culture of girls supporting girls in real life that this movie actually showed compared to the toxic way media always showcased girls competing against each other and i think that's beautiful...pulling each other's hair is actually not what we do all the time!

But Emmet was astonished at her ability to pull the confession out of Chutney being a newbie, not because he ever doubted her intelligence. Legally Blonde is an absolutely iconic feminist movie, a lot of tropes where females are in careers typically dominated by males have them tone down their feminity to succeed perpetuating the idea that traits considered more feminine are a professional detriment, but Elle Woods proves that you don't have to hide your feminity if you don't want to, because it can be an asset to your success. It also challenges the stereotypes of cattiness in female friendships, Elle's friends believed and supported her all the way and much of the movie portrayed the ways in which women can uplift and support each other not bring each other down.

As someone who witnessed the ammonia thyglocolate deactivate with my mother’s straight perm because the hairdresser gave her the wrong time frame to wait before showering, absolutely DO NOT WASH YOUR HAIR BEFORE IT IS SET. If the hairdresser tells you to wait two days, wait an extra day JUST IN CASE. When Elle said her friend’s curls were ruined, she means RUINED. My mother’s hair got permanently dry, split and incredibly frizzy. Her ENTIRE head with a hair length that went halfway down her back. It looked awful, felt disgusting and brushing was a nightmare. She had to wear her hair in a pony tail for months because it was the only way for her to get it under control to go out until the new hair was long enough to chop the ruined part off. My mother never got another perm again even with a different hairdresser (she obviously never went to the old one again, especially when she never took responsibility for her mistake when my mother called to complain). She was understandably too traumatised by ordeal.

Everybody is talking about how Chutney could have told her she got it redone a few days later but two things contradict this possibility: the first being the fact that Elle kept talking and did not give her the chance to refute. While doing this, she continued to raise her voice and get a rise out of Chutney, eventually leading to her exploding out of anxiety and her nerves being strung too tight. The other reason is: who is actually going to believe that the daughter of someone who's father just got murdered is gonna go out and get their hair done? It would have been an empty lie and I think Chutney knew that, leading to her looking nervous and not knowing what to say.

Elle went from 0 to 100 in 2 seconds lol. I love the scene construction where, leading up to her final questions, everyone pretty much assumed Elle was stupid. The most obvious was the opposing counsel who looked like she totally had this in the bag. She objected to Elle's story about Tracy Marcinko not because she was afraid it would be used against her case but because she thought 'why are we entertaining this idiot?' She underestimated her through and through. Then when Elle steps up with her rapid-fire questions the prosecutor was still struggling with cognitive dissonance about Elle's ability as a lawyer and her own chance at winning the case that she couldn't get the objection in. Then we got the confession from Chutney and the whole thing was over. This is such a great scene. Reese's acting and the editing of reaction shots are top-notch.

In addition to how great this scene in displaying Elle's intelligence in her own way, I also think it's a fantastic example of how important it is to ask the RIGHT questions in order to reveal the truth of a situation. It's a very simple, but often overlooked strategy in these types of interrogation scenes that can can be related to real life. If Elle hadn't asked Chutney what she'd done earlier that day, it's possible she could have lost the case whether her knowledge of perm maintenance was relative or not (but I like to believe Elle would've won no matter what). It's a very simple thing, but it brings me so much satisfaction to see Elle's face light up after asking that question and having put all the pieces together :)

I remember a Legally Blonde Fan saying something like,"It's great that Elle won the Case by exposing Chutney's lie about getting a Perm and then washing her hair the SAME day, but I would have liked it if Elle won the Case a different way that had nothing to do with hair care, beauty, or fashion. Not every case can be solved by using hair care, beauty, or fashion. I would have liked it if she won the Case by using critical thinking something like questioning Chutney on not hearing the gunshot when she was in the shower as gunshots are loud. That would have made the winning the Case all that sweeter." 😀
@DeathnoteBB2 жыл бұрын
@@MarySmith-lv3mo That’s a wild quote cause people always think they know more than they do. A big house, faraway gunshot? In a shower? You’d have to do a whole experiment to make sure you couldn’t hear it. People just assume things like “Well gunshots are loud so obviously being directly under loud, running water isn’t loud at all” and decide it’s obvious and true. But anyway, saying “I mean I’m pretty sure she would have heard it” does NOT hold up in court it turns out. Chutney would just say “Well I was there and I didn’t hear it…” But pointing out a contradiction in testimony based on cold hard facts and visual evidence does. And that’s not even getting into narrative cohesion! Elle started in fashion school, of course she’d win with knowledge gained from her background. That’s how storytelling works and also a real reason law schools want people of various backgrounds! (Also their “not every case can be solved with X” sounds like such a crappy excuse. Like… yeah? But this one was? What kind of argument is that? Not every case can be solved with X so why ever bring it up? What?)
@francinev39712 жыл бұрын
@@MarySmith-lv3mo damn but it was critical thinking. she managed to use her own experience and knowledge for something that needs logic. it was more or less a happy coincidence too but it shows that you don't have to stay by the books every time.

Some of my favourite scenes in it are the one where she first gets mad at Warren and reminds him she got into the same school he did, and then when Vivien first visits her and tells her Warren actually did not pass the admission tests and they basically start bonding over the fact - not said out loud, but definitely heavily implied - that they, on the other hand, both got into the school under their own power.

@DrakeDraco20002 жыл бұрын
The brilliance of this scene is that, everything about the way Elle acted prior to the perm reveal helped her point. Sure, we the audience are supposed to believe that she was stressed, nervous and out of her depth. But the fact that she kept going back to the shower point stressed to every member of the jury, the legal teams, and the judge that she had been caught in a lie. There was no way Chutney could have walked it back after stressing that point so many times. Anyone in that room would have assumed her prior performance was her Columbo-ing her way to victory, leading Chutney into a false sense of security so she would slip up.
@nrafter530 Жыл бұрын

Aside from Elle, you also have to give Emmett credit here, as well. In the beginning of this scene, she kept turning back to him for help and he kept encouraging her to keep going, like he was saying "You got this." Also gotta love each OMG reaction. Elle's was out of surprise for the sudden revelation, Brooke's was for learning that she was Chutney's intended victim (and Elle having proved her innocence), and the judge's was for hearing the key witness inadvertently confessing to the crime.

Yes!! It was beautiful! I love always loved how it was something really girly - haircare rules - that saved the day. It shows that feminist does matter and can be powerful. And Elle completely embraces her femininity in every way. People assume she’s dumb and that there’s nothing more to her than her looks, humor, and silly side (as most people assume about girls) but she proves that there is way more than meets the eye with her compassion, genuine kindness, intelligence, and intuition. She is also tough, but it’s a quiet toughness for example she endured a lot of bullying, belittling, and humiliation in this film, but she never let it get the best of her. Her trails could have destroyed anyone’s self esteem, but she has so much mental toughness that she kept her sense of self and rose above the belittling, she knew who she was in her heart.

Not only does she help unravel the murder, at the risk of her own life (and to her boyfriend Jeff's horror) she sneaks into the criminal's apartment to obtain the vital evidence. There even seems to be a subtle empowerment message when Lisa mentions to Jeff smart stable women saving guys in certain situations. Grace Kelly portrayed the role masterfully.
