Great video with lots of good info. As you say, not much out there as you have found. There are some quirky requirements when it comes to certification. In Australia, you must comply with all relevant ADRs and VSB14 (Vehicle Safety Bulletins 14) issued by the Department of Infrastructure is a good place to start. Things like, if you don’t have sufficient ventilation then at least 50% all windows need to be able to open, electrical installations to comply with AS/NZS 3001, and of course compliant gas installations. VSB14 also refers to toilets, showers, sinks and drainage, TV installations, lighting, roof modifications etc. All good stuff

Thank you for making this video mate! Very relevant for me as a fellow transit camper build in Aus and I was seriously considering getting a single seat like you did so I didn't have to squeeze my tall ass into the front every time haha, especially useful when stealth camping. I'm convinced now I should just live with it and avoid going through all the hassle you went through when trying to insure it. So many relevant useful videos you have made, keep up the good work! :)

Also you will keep a stealth aspect if you keep three seats. With two it can give away that it is a camper but I guess not too many people would pick up on that.

I did seriously consider that but evidently if we did have an accident (say a write off) and the insurer was to find out, they may void our cover, meaning we could well be driving around without any safety net. So we opted for the safer and smarter decision. A younger me may have well gone the other road though!

Hey nice work! I have a 2017 Transit I converted a few years ago in New Zealand. Similar problem, we can't change the number of seatbelts easily, so I had to stick to the bench seat too. I could have fitted another seatbelt in the back to keep 3 seatbelt seats to remain the 'same'. But then that would require engineer testing. Funnily enough the model I bought didn't have side airbags or heated seats, so those wouldn't have been a problem. Anyway, best to just get the correct van at the beginning if you can :) In the end having 3 seats at the front is quite often useful. And yes I can squeeze through too if I'm desperate, but normally walk around...
@EatSleepVan
@EatSleepVan 2 жыл бұрын
What's also different in NZ - we have no need to 'convert' a panel van over to a 'camper'. Insurance isn't a problem here, they just insure it. They even insured it while I was building it too. So legally I'm still just a van, with lots of sh!t in the back!
@SALTYVANVENTURES

Yes our van we build in NZ did not comply to half the rules here in Aus and we insured it with Covi as a campervan too. Much easier over there.

Thanks for all your videos, I'm waiting for my Ford Transit 350E now, but sadly about a 12-18 month wait. Not surprised Ford aren't willing to play ball though as Ford's factory is in Turkey and they won't do anything outside of the norm. I just ordered a van and got the two single seats, but tried to ask them to do a ladder on Transit van, they have them on Customs and the measurements are nearly the same, but they flat out refuse as it's only a Custom accessory (so ridiculous)

@@SALTYVANVENTURES The single seat option was around $150. Its your for that price. I order the Ford Transit mid-roof FWD in February, and it should turn up at the dealer next Saturday (16/10). After couple of days pre-delivery checks & rego, the van then heads off to the modifier in Queanbeyan for three week. Modification to the van is a rear hoist, controllability of rear barn doors, mechanical hand-control, a second row of two seats that fold up, docking stations for the driver and pax, a new pax seat (that can be docked either side) and a docking point on my power wheelchair. Mods are more expensive than the van. I intend slowly modifying the van with a happijac bed, 80+litre underbody tank, solar system, sink, vent fan, induction cooktop, fans, fridge, TV and cupboards. Shower will be from the rear hoist. Design will be, suffice to say, very tricky. I'm not using gas. Your vlog has been helpful in determining pitfalls and suppliers. Trev

This is really useful because as you say the information is sketchy online. Australia is such a highly beauracratic country. My situation is that I am still in the buying. I am wanting to buy a slwb toyota commuter. It's such a grey area about getting it registered as an empty van. otherwise I have to get a light rigid license and register it as a bus I think. gosh I had a commuter 20 years ago, an ex military vehicle. had no seats, put a bed in the back, never even contemplated this compliance or conversion problem. no-one ever asked. What I am wondering is; until it actually gets to the more complexly fitted out stage, do I need to do anything, does anyone know? I don't even own it yet as I keep coming up against this light rigid non compliant without all the seats in it rigmarole. SO it didn't exactly answer all my questions but definitely has steered me in the right direction. I am seriously going to be following your every word soon. SO glad to have found you both.
@SALTYVANVENTURES
@SALTYVANVENTURES 2 жыл бұрын
I believe if there are more than 12 seats you need a light rigid although you will be removing all the seats. My understanding is that when you change the seating you will need to get it taken to an engineer to who will re plate the van to how many seats are now it in (ie 2 or 3) then you take this to service NSW to change it on the registration. Then your free to drive it on a car license.

Don't see what difference the fuel makes to the overall payload as you don't get a higher gvm because the tank is empty. You still have to include it as part of the overall payload same as adding passengers etc. It can't weigh more than its design weight.

Yes i hope that this video will help prevent people coming unstuck like i nearly did! Its always best to triple check what is legal and what is not in your country/state before stating and planning, although it is sometimes hard to find the information. We just have it in the glove box for safe keeping, but the only people that will require it i believe is the insurance company if we make a claim.

Do you have to tell the insurer whether you will be living in it permanently and would that make a difference?
@SALTYVANVENTURES

No they didn't ask. I believe because it is a specific motorhome insurer that is more or less assumed.

Yes, very happy! The process is pretty undocumented so it was a bit nerve wrecking when the engineer was inspecting everything. Glad we only needed to modify a couple of very small things to get it certified.

@@SALTYVANVENTURES So far everything is going well on my build. The only thing I am concerned about is passing on the electrical system. Had my diagram looked over by a few electricians who said it looked perfect. Guess time will tell. Keep it up on the vids man. Learning a lot!

@@danswezey4294 From what i have learnt you will need to get it signed off by an electrician and get them to fill out that form which makes them use their trades number, so unless they are pretty casual, they will probably want to do it themselfs or see a photo montage showing its been done to standard (like running the wires ect). Once that's done, all the engineer wants to see is that paperwork, even if they don't agree with how it's done, they aren't electricians, they are essentially just checking the paperwork is in order. That might rest your mind a bit

@@SALTYVANVENTURES keep practicing! Write a script, try a teleprompter, or like when producing a movie, take 2, take 3. Your audience will appreciate it. Probably a bunch of other creative things to try too.☺️
