absolutely love that bit where Amon taking the bending away, and the lightening turns into flame, then peters out. Also cool that General Iroh knows how to lightening bend. Though my fave part is definetly Marko, while going up against Amon, straining against the blood bending, they give him that tiny bit of animation of his nose scrunching in sheer effort before shooting Amon with everything he's got. Great stuff

@@msssaur7574 I can’t say for certain, but I’m pretty confident he wasn’t. He never mentioned anything about that afterwards, Amon was very powerful (even overtaking his blood bending brother), and there didn’t seem to be any obvious indication he was (since it’s a kid show, they usually just tell us things openly instead of implying as most kids miss little details). So probably not, because everyone struggled against Amon, so Mako probably was just actually overpowered and only lucky/resourceful enough to get a shot, even though he didn’t get to charge it up enough to do much with it. Plus he was pretty tired after Amon let him go.

A prodigy like Azula is poweful enough to blast lightning on Aang at this point, so obviously it would have a lot more damage than what Mako did. Also, Mako was being bloodbended at the same time, I'm sure the lightning he blasted Amon with was with the most minimal force he could muster it with.

And when they say "most vulnerable" during the avatar state, they are referring to the fact that if he dies, the cycle ends. It doesn't mean their bodies become weaker or else resistant to damage. So that's irrelevant to bring here.

Lightning once created is deadly, hence Iroh told zuko it was called the cold blooded fire..because you don't command it, you're only it's humble guide and direct it. Being bloodbent or not. If fire is thrown at you, you burn. If lightning is throw at you you get electrocuted. He got shocked for a good few seconds to which his bloodbending grasp should have been off..it was powerful enough to throw him against the wall and he gets up unscathed. Katara got burned with a simple novice trick by Aang.. without any force in the fire. This dude gets shocked and expelled and he gets up like it's no problem.

I liked how common lightningbending became in TLoK. Makes sense, especially considering just how practical it is for a modernized world. What kinda sucked was because it's so powerful (it's probably the most powerful offensive form of bending), they obviously nerfed it when it came to battle. Think of how easy it would have been to defeat all the villains if they just said "Mako, do the thing!" Then they just went crazy and aimed a charged-up Mako at everyone. XD

@@x97k8 true. And I did like that in Book 4 we got to see just how powerful lightningbending could get. But it also kinda seemed like the writers just saved the lightningbending for the finales. I know Mako does more in Book 1, but it would have been nice to see him do those quick bursts again in later seasons. Like maybe seeing him attempting to shock Ming Hua before Book 3 finale (something as simple as his fingers getting sparkly or something idk) but seeing how fast she moves, he decides against it until he gets a clear shot. Then in the finale we see he really was saving that trump card and how well that decision worked. It would also more effectively show that Mako is a pretty good tactical thinker in battle.

Lightning is the coolest form of bending in my opinion. The difference between how it’s used in ATLA and TLOK is quite remarkable. Only Ozai, Azula, and Iroh knew how to make it and they usually required some sort of charge up. Mako and general Iroh are able to create it as easily and quickly as they create fire. I really do wish lightning got more screen time after season 1. It also would have been cool if Korra had learned to lightning bend. She didn’t even learn redirection like Aang, at least not that I remember.

I think the different between the Amon scene and the Spirit Vine scene is that Mako was under a lot of stress. He was actively being bloodbent and he was resisting, righting to be able to barely even move. If we were to take in his later Book 4 feat then you can tell that he either improved a lot. However I would like to take a moment to think that he was barely able to create a current he could direct yet alone power of the bolt. He was hoping it would most likely stun Amon just long enough to escape.

I find it weird how people keep on lamenting the situation of lightning bending being so commonplace and pretty much non-lethal. Firstly, it is likely taught to more firebenders than it ever was during the hundred year war. Probably even before that. No longer was it just a privilege of royalty, it has become a practical skill for any firebender that can do it. Second, it is most likely taught as less of a killing move but more as a skill for a trade. As seen in the clips, the city uses it as a power source and as such, will have a large demand for it creating so.much opportunities and reasons for it to be taught to just anyone who can firebend. Third, it's 80+ freaking years. Think about the technology we had back in WW2, and compare that to what we have today. And that's in a universe without bending the elements, what more in there? They pretty much made the jump from a post-medieval lifestyle to near WW2 tech.

Back then in ATLA, all the main enemies were firebenders in all 3 books. In TLOK, every enemy has their own speciality. Combustion, air, water, lava, etc. And every book has their own enemies

This bending seemed so much more powerful in ATLA. In ATLK it seems like a simple electricity discharge,like Pikachu's thunderbolt hahaha. Azula killed aang in the avatar state using a lightning bolt. Amon was barely injured when Mako shot him and the truck's driver. Ming Hua only died because of the water around her

A. aang was hit in the back where his spinal column was, so it was like a 1 shot. B. amon was wearing leather and a ceramic mask, both nonconductors + mako was under the influence of bloodbending. However, it still was powerful enough to hurt him and knock him out for a while. C. Amon was not in that truck, I think. D.Azula was a psychopath, of course she would give a more powerful discharge. Mako is more cool and collected, he knows the cosequences of his actions so gives less electricity.

I see some people saying Mako is more powerful than Azula because he can charge his lightning faster. But that’s not the point. Azula’s fighting style is all about precision - she aims to kill (it’s easy for us to take that for granted, since it was a “kids” show and they couldn’t actually show killing). Her technique is that of an assassin. Also, Azula is from a time where there still isn’t that much technology, so life is “slower”. In her context, Azula was extremely fast. Mako, on the other hand, comes from a time of modernity: there are cars, planes, movies (movers) and pro-bending. He is a good fighter but he lacks precision, because what he needs is good reflexes. He grew up on the streets having to always be aware of his surroundings and being as quick as he could. Azula grew up in a palace, not having to run around all the time. She had “calm” surroundings that allowed her to really practice and become the perfect bender (in terms of technique. Remember how she also had TWO “coaches”, Lo and Li). Mako didn’t have any of that. I think it is like comparing a Victorian woman to one from the 21st century. You can’t really do that because the contexts are completely different. “Oh, the modern women are more agile than the Victorian ones”. That doesn’t really say much because today women (people in general) have to cross the street, hop in and get out of cars, enter stores etc., whilst women from the past had to do nothing of the sort, so their clothes and way of living were perfect for the time.

@@sarahtobore2832 ok the principles of loghtning bending here is that not only do you need a stable mind but you also need to separate as much yin and yang as possible. So that when the collision between both energies occur when balance is being restored uou get lightning. Your hand acts as its guider. Here mako is rarely even seen separating the yin and yang. This is why he fails to score a kill with lightning. Hes not separating enough yin and yang to make the balance restoration collision enough juice to zap.

I feel like Mako does that on purpose. He doesn't actually want to kill people unless he absolutely has to. I also think, and someone else mentioned it here too, because LOK is much more advanced technologically, it has likely become much more common to train fire benders who have the ability use it not as a fighting style, but as a way to find work. So, it's likely they don't actually know how to produce a shock powerful enough to do really do damage. Mako probably only knows how to fight with it because he and Bo grew up on the streets and worked for a gang who used it to kill people. They probably taught him how to produce a lethal blow.

Difficult to learn, but not impossible. And Lightening Regeneration on TLA's time was exclusively restricted to high ranking Fire Nation nobility & select military officers. An egalitarian settlement like Republic City would have different people from different backgrounds learning all sorts of techniques from bending masters without discrimination. Korra is set in the time of Industrial Age and Innovation. Industrial Age needs unlimited sources of power. What better way to get that than from a skilled Firebending master? It's not such a stretch. Iroh taught Zuko. Zuko probably taught one of two firebenders. Those firebenders taught more and more firebenders as lightening manipulation became high demand. Mako learnt from Fire Bolt Zolt, a Triple Theat mafia lord.

I just love to see lightning. 3 reasons. 1. Utility (of course. Emergency electricity should it black out.) 2. 2 in 1 fulfilment. Speed and high damage (lightning is fast and caused high damage) 3. Zeus or Thor kind of feeling. 4. Categorized special bending like *metal bend, lava bend, blood vent* . Which also means, power flexing. Sorry make that 4 reasons. And most of their answer would be: *"It is innate abilities and having mix parents of firebender and earthbenders doesn't mean a thing."* (Well... It could be true too. I mean Toph did mention how rare it is for an earthbender to have lava bend ability and there doesn't seem any mention regarding fire Bender and earth Bender mix parents. Besides lavabending is done when an Earthbender's earth chakra has been unlocked.
